It's helpful to me when I'm not in an anxious state. I find myself more able to appreciate my surroundings on a walk, or time spent with my family. But, if I'm actively ruminating, mindfulness is not as effective.

Mindfulness is ERP, because it includes willingness. Be with your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and resist the urge to fix or change them (Hershfield, 2017, everyday mindfulness for OCD).
@philipholding

I'm not sure about that. Mindfulness is acceptance, not willingness. ERP is exposure therapy, a willingness (intention) to face one's fears (anxiety), and resist the urge to action the compulsions. ( Retired mindfulness practioner and NHS CBT therapist).

I have severe ocd and mindfulness doesn't help. Nothing helps anymore. I did every Therapy, every medicine and I even have a deep brain stimulation. It only gets worse. Ocd, chronic depression, autism, adhd and now an eating disorder. If anyone has any tips I would love to hear them. I am lonely and don't want to do this living thing anymore. 😭

Hi there! Everything you are talking about (all these experiences and difficulties) are typically present in Borderline Personality Disorder. You need to look for a specialized therapist in BPD that will help you look at the possibility that you meet criteria for both BPD and OCD and I would strongly recommend Dialectical Behavior therapy which has a strong mindfulness component but also a variety of other techniques and skills. Also, if you are doing mindfulness to stop the thoughts and to feel better it's never going to "work". The goal of mindfulness is to be present and accepting of everything that is and that includes intrusive thoughts and other unwanted states of being, feeling, thinking/experiencing. It can help to ask yourself the question "what if I just observe (my thoughts or painful emotions?". I hope this helps a bit. Keep practicing and keep trying. Life is worth it even with the pain.

Have you read the book “You are not a rock”? The exercises in that book helped me, along with therapy, and forcing myself to be social, practice hobbies, exercise, and eat well. Even if I felt like I didn’t deserve it. Even if I was scared. Even if I thought I was being watched and was going to be arrested/house would burn down/whatever. Staying home and doing compulsions makes it worse. Please don’t give up. There is hope for everyone.

Could I ask, I’m in the beginning stages of accepting that I have OCD. I’ve been struggling with meta OCD and thinking about it all day long. I’m more so confused or at least need the right guidance on what the difference between doing exposures and having compilations is. Like the way I’m seeing it right now is that I’ve been actively contradicting my negative thoughts in order to help make some of the anxiety and worry go down. I’ve been confronting them head on and agreeing with my thoughts and after some time, the worry does go down so it is working. But then I think, is that a compulsion because it’s alleviating my issue? Or is that okay and me questioning it and having this thought right this second the compulsion? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Mindfulness seems more like avoidance to me. Be in the present, so you don't have to face your fears. I believe in the liberating power of ERP. I'm no longer avoiding, ignoring, disregarding my fears, I'm looking for them.
@forgot10sup
@forgot10sup 2 ай бұрын
It aint avoiding, it is learning to have no response to thoughts thatre disturbing u. Avoiding would be to just shut urself off with substances or videos and try not to think of whatever worries u. Mindfulness teaches Ur brain to focus more and it teaches Ur brain that whatever thoughts there are that Ur mind creates are not dangerous. U should try it too, it is helpful (difficult as f too 💀)

It's not avoidance, it's being fully aware of your thoughts and feelings, OCD thoughts included, and not doing anything about them.

Why ocd sufferes have to do ERP for getting ride of it? I just want to believe that ocd fears are false. That my scrupulosity whic is saying Allah (Creator) is not with or whatever i wish to have is sinful. Even if many says. And this causes me pain and heart ache. I just don't want to believe ut. Can't i just believe truly that Anxiety or fear in this situation of ocd or depression are false? And this helps actually better for me. I used to do many things without fear , asking for things from Allah without fear. But now i fear asking same things as i feel and kinda forcefully believe that it's not okay or it's sinful.

hi, a therapist told me my brain was just doing its job, trying to help me stay safe, even though it was doing the wrong things. He said try telling your brain "Thank you for trying to help me." It does work for me sometimes, even if I have to reassure it repeatedly. It just acknowledges the thought & kind of puts it to sleep.

I have a question. I know scrupulosity is faced by all kinds of people from any Religious belief. Like Muslim, Hindu, christian and even atheist. And each believe their own religion like a Christian wouldn't believe Hindu or Muslim or an atheist believe. A Christian would think his/her religion is true. And others are wrong. So when everyone from each religion experiences the same scrupulosity issue how to know it's ocd and not true? It confuses me a lot. Because as a Muslim whenever I face scrupulosity I just convince myself that it's ocd not me and everything is okay. But then a thought comes that people from different beliefs face this and have the same opinion about themselves. Then what is actually true? Then it causes me more pain and confusion.
