I came across your channel through looking for advise on not slurring words when i speak. Stumbled on your website is very informative. Hopefully i can better improve my spoken, more specifically my enunciation
@Englishwithkim4 жыл бұрын
Welcome to my channel! I'm glad you're finding my resources helpful. While enunciation is important, you want to make sure you're clearly and obviously stressing the right syllable of key words. This helps people follow what you're saying, since we expect to hear stressed syllables stand out more than others. It can sound like you're slurring words if there isn't enough contrast in your speech. This more recent video on pitch will also help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3anZ6Fql6qke6c

Hi Kim! As a native Russian speaker I find it very challenging to use pitch for word stress. Russian does have word stress but we only use volume not pitch. So we pronounce stressed syllables louder and sometimes a bit longer but do not rise the pitch. Now I hear that I use the same pattern for English and struggle to add pitch. I think I even can not always hear if I rise the pitch or not. I suspect that I might think I rise the pitch while it is just the volume. What could I do to separate these two things and concentrate on pitch?
@Englishwithkim5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. If you're not used to paying attention to your pitch, it can be challenging to tell the difference between pitch and volume. Have you seen my video on contrast? This will help you hear how these different elements work together: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKa0pqqdmrCrkJo I also encourage you to try some of the pitch exercises in this video on how to find your voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ana2ZXiPj7Fnfbs They are a little more extreme than the one in this video in response to people like you who have trouble identifying their pitch. I can think of a number of suggestions to help you separate pitch and volume. Try speaking very quietly, almost whispering, and then try to create different levels of pitch using your voice. You can try the exercises in this video, only while speaking at a very quiet volume: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5DWqmCebMx6g8U I'm going to keep this question in mind for future videos... it really is a challenge!

Hi Kim, your video is wonderful! Can you explain more and in a simple way on what is the difference between tone, pitch and intonation? I somehow confused and doesn't know how to explain to others.
@Englishwithkim6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eunise! I'm happy you found this helpful. That is a great question and something I definitely want to clarify in another video. I tend to use "intonation" and "tone of voice" interchangeably, shortening "tone of voice" to "tone." Both refer to the emotion and attitude that you're expressing. Intonation is more common in the educational context, whereas "tone of voice" is more common in everyday conversations. (Parents will tell their kids, "I don't like your tone of voice.") Pitch refers to the highness and lowness of your voice and is an essential element of stress and intonation. In tonal languages (such as Chinese, the most common example), tone refers to the different pitch patterns that can be used to say a particular syllable. English is NOT a tonal language, and when you hear us talk about "tone" we're talking about the attitude, mood, timbre, and voice quality, all of which give us more information about how the person feels. I hope that helps clarify while you're waiting for a more detailed video from me! Be sure to check out this fun video on pitch exercises: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5DWqmCebMx6g8U

I appreciate you sharing your experience! This can help non-native speakers understand that pitch is something that needs to be learned. The exercise I show is actually a vocal warm-up for actors. I know how you feel - I personally need to be more conscious of where I breathe when speaking. I hope you make progress on your pitch!
