As an important harbour town Genoa developed the making of sturdy sails for their ships. The strong fabric of which sails were made became popular among sailors as it was cheap and sturdy. Genoa in Latin used to be written with a J instead of a G. The sturdy fabric became known as: Bleu de Gênes.

The fact that the Genoese had possessions from Chios to Corsica really shows how great there hegemony was. Now wonder they fought such brutal wars with the Venetians over power in the Mediterranean!

There are those so powerful and feared on the sea that England pays an annual fee to them for permission to hoist their flag and scare away pirates, and those who build sinking cities in swamps. To each his own I suppose 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🤓

Why use a picture of Portuguese coean-faring ships as a thumbnail for a video about Genoa?

Very interesting video about the history of Genoa! I've always been fascinated by this city and its rich history. I'm particularly interested in its role in the Crusades and the Renaissance

please redo this. why not show a nice map indicating some of their trade routes or territories controlled all the way to caffa etc so people can properly grasp their influence on the world and how their trade linked crucial good transfer between east and west. doesnt need to to that in-depth but for a video on the power and influence you dont do them justice. every Italian I've met (mostly boomers ok) share the sentiment that Genoa(Jenoa), if given the chance to reform, would be able to prosper again (however there are wildly different views over how the government system should work. I guess its common worldwide for people to find some flaw in their governments and this one hasnt even reformed)

A misleading detail mentioned in this video about Saladin. The area he conquered was called Judah or the Land of Israel more than a thousand years before the Romans who conquered Judah invented the name "Palestine" of course it goes without saying that there is no connection between the Palestinians today and the people who lived there then. From the video you can still think that Israel is a new invention. Those who are not convinced can visit Rome and see the Gate of Titus where you can see the Romans bring to Rome the treasures of the Temple that they stole from Judah and used to build the Colosseum
