The powerful puma patrols the canyon in the Angeles National Forest on December 7, 2022.
(turn on the sound)
Believe it or not, this was most likely a message for the other male lion, who was in this very spot, five hours earlier, and then returned only twenty minutes after this. Twenty minutes! More to come later. Stay tuned.

In the summer of 2001, my late wife and I were hiking in deep woods the mountains in Alberta when we heard this sound ahead of us. It was well out of sight, but not that far away either. We knew instantly there was only one animal it could have been. That was scary. We slowly turned back toward the trailhead, looking frequently over our shoulder.

To anyone thinking of camping in the wilderness, it honestly pays dividends to watch videos like this one. Whenever it's after dark and you and your squad are gathered around the fire and you hear some shit like this out in the trees, you get to be the gigachad who goes, "It's a mountain lion. Sounds like it's trying to communicate. We stay close to the campsite and keep this fire going, we'll be fine."

@Sims3ForeverDude Your 'scientific' semantics defy the obvious realities. The realities are that they are cats that are the physical size of adult humans. That makes them physically large cats. And even though they may be physically inferior to African lions, tigers and most jaguars, they are still physically larger than leopards - the smallest of the pantheras. If a puma had you pinned to the ground with your neck in his jaws, would you still be thinking that this is a 'lesser cat' at that moment?

The Puma scream was within 50 yards of us, hidden by the devils club and wild rose thorny brush. Big ole Firs hanging over us had us searching the trees for cougar as we poled our boat back out the narrow slough. Ya, what a sound. Scary like in horror show. So when I heard this Utube video i got chills, as back then. We kept it quiet to protect the Puma...beaver trapping was common then in the area...I did it. I bet that puma didn't have all his toes. Oh wow. So that's who made those sounds when I lived near the woods in BC! All those years I thought I only had one encounter with the elusive Mountain Lion and that's when I heard it growling at me while I was hiking. It's a bit surreal now being across the continent and hearing it on youtube...and making the connection after all those years. :-) Thanks for the vid!

Explain your statement? How can you assess this animal to be trustworthy just from a short video of it screaming? Was it a trustworthy scream and where do you work that would make a mountain lion’s trustworthiness relevant? Your comment is confusing to me.

I lived in Napa, CA. up a canyon that had very few houses, mostly woods like in this video. I would hear some strange sounds at night, one of which was exactly like this Puma screaming. I could never figure out what it was, now I know! Another sound we heard at night was very odd and didn't know what is was until I saw a video on "What the Fox says" thanks for this video

three weeks ago i was in the backyard with my dog. I watched this video the week prior suddenly i heard a sound at my fence. It was 8pm or so, dark. "Oh look Maggie, time to go in the house." I have about 40 game cams up and I've seen her and her two cubs 4 times over 3 nights. A creek runs through our ranch up here so the critters do to.

I remember the first time I heard a Mtn lion scream while we were out deer/hog hunting in California. I legit thought it was a lady screaming until my dad said, no, that’s a Mtn lion. I lived in California for most of my growing up years and hunted my whole life, and had never seen one. But hearing it and not seeing it was literally bone chilling. Then a few years ago, my family was out hunting and a Mtn lion was stalking a guy walking down a valley to flush out any possible deer. Luckily his hunting partners were watching him as he was coming down the Mtn, and noticed he was being being stalked, and only about 30 yards above him. His friends, although sketchy, shot in his direction to kill it before it was able to get him. I have always wanted to actually see one, just never in that sort of circumstance. Amazing creatures though.

All wild felines seem to be among the most elusive of creatures. I have spent most of my 66 years in the rural areas of Western Massachusetts. Over the years have seen many black bear, deer, moose and many other smaller forms of wildlife. But even though the bobcat population is considered to be relatively large in pretty much every state, i have only seen one in the wild. I would wager that both you and i have been seen hundreds of times by wild cats over the years of spending time in the woods.

Ya, I never saw one. Heard one close and bone chilling is the correct term. I've seen fishers, marten, black bear, and possibly a wolverine...which shocked me, but never a cougar. Western Washington near mount St Helens

@@tonyprice2256 I’ve seen quite a few wild bobcats. Very cool animals as well. Actually was out shooting squirrels with my daughter, brother and dad, and a bobcat came out of the tree line and ran and snagged a squirrel that my brother had just shot off of a fence post about 30 yards from the cat, then immediately ran back into the trees. Was so crazy to witness. Super cool. I live on our family cattle ranch in Montana now, and our rancher neighbor about 3 miles away has seen a few mountain lions on his property. So they’re definitely around here. I still want to see one, but also don’t want to risk our cattle either. Kind of a catch 22. Haha

Pumas/cougars/panthers/mountain lions are giant cats, just not part of the family officially called “big cats”. Therefore they’re closer to lynxes and bobcats than they are to tigers and jaguars.

Back in 1974 I knew a guy named "Catdaddy." He hunted the big cats without a permit, eventually going to prison for a few years. When he got out he fell right back into bad habits. He would hang out on the ridges with real old school NVG he stole from the army and take these whenever he could. One night, a cat found him first and snuck up from behind. He ended up falling in love with it and they moved into a cave together. Several man-cat children were the result of this union. Last I heard he was working the railroad in '98.

I think that’s what’s going on in this particular clip. A few weeks earlier, this same male lion, was in front of this camera, caterwauling, while trying to reach out to a nearby female lion. This time though, I think this was more about being territorial, considering there was a different male lion here, only 20 minutes after this.

These cats are the Apex Predators. Felix con color is in a class of its own. They're capable of taking down an elk, as I have seen a it happen. I just don't see how they can move about very silently, like a ghost! The north American Indians called these cats : noshdootska and translated into English as The Ghosts of the Mountains. These cats can make various noises from a bird chirping to a full blown screaming lady with her hair on fire 🔥!
