Thanks for watching this video! Special shoutout to Thaddeus for the numerous meetings and talks we've had over the years on this subject. Special thanks to "The Hated One" for his awesome video content (please subscribe). Here's the PDF for this video: bit.ly/3gY1KGI. BTW, I was just teasing the Apple folks on the "fan boys" comment. I use a Mac for work and an iPad for home use. I'm still trying to get better at lighting my videos in a way that doesn't reflect on my glasses. Dear Lynda, if you're reading this, please subscribe to my channel. It would really mean a lot to me. The tips included in this video will only "help" to make you more digitally private and secure. It's difficult to go fully off-grid, digitally. Hopefully the measures put into place in this video will at least make me a little more annoying to track. Thanks for supporting my channel and stay safe! ~Cliff

Another point to add in about opening devices. There was a supreme court ruling that if you have your phone set to a biometric lock, the police can force you to swipe your finger or use your face to unlock the device. If you go to Password however, Androids (at least the two I have) will allow you to encrypt the whole phone.

Ever since the movie "TAKEN" with Liam Neeson I have looked for a very small cell phone to hide on me incase of illegal detention.I have never been able to find one of any quality.I have even looked at a smartwatch with a sim card to fit in a survival case. Hidden lockpicks and handcuff keys are fine, but nothing brings in the cavalry like a cell phone.

Great video as always Cliff. I would also look into a bluetooth reciever. I think it might be a good idea to use your wired earbuds in converting them into a bluetooth device. Since some/most of us drive and we need a headset for our phones. Its a good item especially for using it while traveling with rental car. I also got this hack from this channel Jlaser_videos (typo) in using your flip phones with IR blaster as a night vision camera. Same can be achieved with smartphones but either using a prepaid phone or removing the IR filter from recent model. Also, Happy 10th anniversary here in KZbin Cliff!

You could also use Briar for chatting. This is peer-to-peer encrypted, which means there is no cloud storage. So every message is only stored locally on your device and the device from the person you are chatting with. Unfortunately, you can't send any pictures with Briar, only text Also, I would recommend using F-droid for downloading certain apps (and you can use Aurora Store to install Play Store apps without a Google account). Also with ScrambledEXIF you can remove metadata from pictures With Shelter you can put apps you might not trust completely in a sandbox (using the workprofile of your phone) I'm NOT a professional, but I hope these tips are worth looking at

I'd add in for apps camscanner. Its a very powerful tool to basically turn any paper into PDF form. Can scan receipts, recipes out of books, important legal documents, etc for backups. Works fine offline or can connect to the net to send to e-mail or others. I'd also recommend bumping your $20 to $100. It takes up virtually the same amount of space & $20 doesn't buy what it use to.

I feel like this is a safe place, so I want to talk about something that we as preppers really don’t like. I’m often called paranoid by my friends, family coworkers. Now I have seen that many of us brush that off and we imagine a day when we will all get to say, “I told you so!” With everything going on, I feel like it’s a time to feel vindicated. That said I have found myself going down rabbit holes and coming out the other end believing the water we drink has microscopic trackers in it (a bit of a exaggeration but not by much). So how do we avoid becoming paranoid? Where is that line? I know some will say there is no line and we should prepare for anything and everything, but how do we stay realistic. How do we know if we’re starting to take things too far?
@circleofowls
@circleofowls 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I think the line is drawn when it starts to negatively affect your life. If it's affecting your relationships, your ability to achieve financial goals or taking up so much time that you're losing out on other important parts of life then it's time to step back. If preparing for something bad to happen is *causing* something bad to happen then you're defeating yourself and the original purpose of being prepared. Take a long hard look at how much preparation is affecting you and the people in your life and I think you'll find the answer.

Good topic. Thanks for the information. I nixed my iphone and its been going on six years now. I use an ipad mini with cellular and use Skype. I enjoy it much better than a phone as I can talk and take notes or do different tasks while chatting, it is much easier ergonomically, on the eyes and works fine on a crowded train commute. I can also communicate with Skype on my imac if I'm working on the computer. The other item I carry is an itouch. I like it because its not a phone and it is not cellular although I can always connect to my ipad and use it as such if needed. Since it is offline, its main purposes are camera, video, file important documents like passport, id card, health card etc in case I need this information in an emergency. I also have a map of my city, use it as a backup light source, I have a compass app and store important contacts. So far so good and the monthly is so much better. Looking forward to exploring some of your ideas in this video.

I have the 6s. My wife and I only buy “new” iPhones when the ones we have break or can no longer update the latest iOS. We buy Apple refurbished phones from trusted eBay sellers that can handle the current iOS. Drop in a SIM card and your good to go. Usually only pay $100 and only had one phone with an issue that a seller made good on. You just have to ask yourself if the new features on the latest iPhone is $800 better than the one you currently own. The answer to me is always no.

You should look at some Camera Apps that can enhance your phone capability so that you can take reconnaissance photos and geolocate the photos with along with a magnetic compass heading.

Superb video, although I have to disagree about the cellphone cover. I'd say, take a good flip-up cover in which you can store cards. A credit-card-size fresnell lens, credit-card-survivaltool etc. could be stored in the sleeve in addition to your mods.

True. I prefer having a standard wallet with RFID blocking.

I don't know if I already commented on this, but, if I haven't: Excellent work as always, TUP!! 🙂 By the way, did you talk about IP ratings in the video? If you did, I somehow must have missed it. A true "prepper phone" should have an IP rating of at least 56, but preferably higher. I don't know about iPhones, but there are quite a few Android phones available, that are build to withstand the elements. You'll still need a rugged cover, of course, no matter the IP code 🙂

Thanks Cliff! Great tutorial! I am a dinosaur...zero tech. skills but want to ensure my privacy! I just have Duck Duck Go but going to do more, thanks to you. Not interested in Facebook, Instagram, Email(though I have one I don't use.) My Android is just to connect with my family and friends, and I use paper roadmaps. Old school, yes, but not a fan of tech toys. I hate the spying crap and indeed may soon switch to a dumb phone! Keep up the good work; I like seeing the good guys win. Blessings. 👵🎶🗽🎭🎈😊👍

I want to remove all connection from my cellphone physically( wi-fi, sim, imei)but would like to use it as a storage device for my books/pictures. Is there a way to do this by removing parts? Thanks in advance
