Hello Sabrah, I would like to express my gratitude for your highly educational and instructive explanations that you and your lovely colleague make accessible to all of us. Your academic preparation and devotion to teaching along with your innate elegance and sweet down-to-earthness really set you apart from all the other teachers. Getting back to the grammar point, there is another aspect of the usage of present perfect continuous students often get confused with: the negative form. They don't quite understand why saying " I haven't been studying English for 2 years" is different to "I haven't studied English for 2 years" or " I haven't been drinking coffee for ages" vs "I haven't drunk coffee for ages". Hopefully you might be covering this in the future. Thank you so much

Dear Sabrah, thank you for this lesson! May be some time I will be using all the tenses properly :) As for homework - all answers are "a". I've made some notes for myself, may be it will be useful for somebody else: Difference between The Present perfect and The Present Perfect Continuous: 1 The Present Perfect Continuous focusses more on the action and implies the action is repeated: ONE ACTION - The Present perfect I've spilled my coffee I've visited my daughter at the hospital (once, it's finished) REPEATED ACTIONS - The Present Perfect Continuous Lately I've been spilling my coffee a lot I've been busy this week, I've been visiting my daughter at the hospital 2 The Present Perfect Continuous focusses more on the action (the doing part) and is often less finished than the Present Perfect. The Present Perfect is often used when we have just finished the action and it still has some relevance to the present moment (often used with words like "just", "already"). Leila's been reading the book (unfinished - she's still reading, or finished temporarily) Leila's read the book (Finished action) I'm tired, I've been doing my homework all evening (Action could be finished, but we still have effect - the tiredness) 3 We use "yet" and "already" with The Present Perfect but we don't use "yet" with the Continuous form and we use "already" less. I haven't done my homework yet. I have already done my homework. 4 The Present Perfect Continuous - new and/or more temporary, The Present Perfect - more permanent or longer. I've been working here for 3 weeks 5 We can't use The Present Perfect Continuous with state verbs (like, love, hate, believe, know) I've known you for 10 years

Present Perfect or Present perfect Continuous??? 5 Key differences between these two perfect tenses. I have lived in Bournemouth for 10 years. I have been living in Bournemouth for 10 years. I have studied French for 15 years. I have been studying French for 15 years. Form of the present perfect tense. Have or has + the past participle i.e ‘I have been’ ‘She has been’ Past participle = third form of the verb i.e gone, been, taught Regular verbs = add ‘ed’ Form of the present perfect continuous tense. Have/ has + been + main verb in the ing form - ‘I have been studying English’. Difference number 1 = the present perfect continuous focusses more on the action and implies the action is repeated. I have spilt my coffee. (Present perfect tense - This is ONE ACTION) ‘I have been spilling my coffee’ (Present perfect continuous tense - this implies that you have spilt your coffee several times) Lately I have been spilling my coffee a lot, I am so clumsy! (Present perfect continuous tense - here it makes sense as you are saying that the action is repeated.) ‘I have visited my daughter at the hospital, she has just had a baby’ Present perfect tense - suggests it has only happened once and is finished. ‘I have been visiting my daughter at the hospital, she has just had a baby’. Present perfect continuous tense - suggests it has either only just finished or that the action has happened several times. ‘I have been busy this week I have been visiting my daughter at the hospital’ Difference number 2 = the present perfect continuous focusses more on the action itself ‘the doing part’ and is often less finished than the present perfect. Present Perfect: it is often used when we have just finished the action so it still has some relevance to the present moment, that is why we tend to use words like just and already with it ie ‘I have already eaten dinner’. Present Perfect Continuous The action may still be ongoing so is unfinished in some cases. ‘Leila’s been reading the book I recommend to her, all about how to be the perfect English teacher’. Present perfect continuous tense - action is unfinished. ‘Leila’s read the book I recommend to her, she’s going to tell me what she thought about it’. Present perfect tense - action is finished. I’ve done my homework - I have just finished it.’ Present perfect tense - action is finished but probably only recently there is still relevance to the present moment. ‘I’ve been doing my homework’ Present Perfect continuous tense - suggests the action is unfinished or you are taking a break so finished temporarily. ‘I’m tired, I have been doing my homework all evening’ Here it could be finished for now, but as we still have some effects of the action very much in the present - the tiredness, we can use present perfect continuous, but if it was totally finished we would use present perfect. Difference number 3 = we use ‘yet’ and ‘already’ with the present perfect, but we don’t use ‘yet’ with the continuous form and we use already less. ‘Have you done your homework yet?’ until now have you completed this action? ‘I have already eaten thank you’ The action is finished and I use ‘already’ to stress I did it before. Difference number 4 - The present perfect continuous can imply a more temporary action something new, but the present perfect often suggests more permanence - or something that has been happening for a longer period of time. ‘I have been working here for three weeks’. We would probably use the continuous form as it suggests a more temporary situation. ‘I have for worked here for three weeks’. This doesn’t sound as natural as saying I have been working here for three weeks. ‘Leila’s been running’ ‘Leila’s been for a run’ There is very little difference in these sentences as they are. ‘Leila’s been running a lot lately’. We use the present perfect continuous because this is a new and more temporary activity and also it is repeated. We often use words and phrases like ‘recently’ ‘at the moment’ and ‘lately’ with the present perfect continuous because they show that something is new or temporary. ‘I normally study at home but recently I have been studying in the library because it is so much quieter than all the noise at home’. ‘I normally stay very safe with my cooking but at the moment I have been experimenting with more spices and chilli’. Difference number 5 - We can’t use the present perfect continuous with state verbs such as love, hate, believe and know. We can’t say, ‘I’ve been knowing you for 10 years’ - this is wrong in the present perfect continuous as we consider knowing to be a state the correct way to say this is ‘I have known you for 10 years’. ‘I’ve believed in God for most of my life’. We can’t use the present perfect continuous here.

@thepuredrop794 жыл бұрын
1) let me go can be used to describe a physical state for example you are holding my arm and I can't physically get away from you, OR, describes an activity or place that you're asking permission to do/go to, for example, "dad, let me go (to the dance on Friday), OR can be used to describe an emotional state, for example, "we divorced five years ago but you still keep sending me gifts. We're not getting back together, you need to let me go (you need to stop having romantic feelings for me). 2) is only used to describe a physical state. You are holding on to someone physically and you're being told to release them from your grasp, for example, "you've grabbed my hand, let go of me". You can substitue 'of me' for the body part that is being held, ie "let go of my hand".

Love you. Andrea P.S: could I say “live” is like “exist” so a state verb ? I have lived in London for two years ( I think live is like “ exist” thus “ a state verb” thus present perfect). 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐎𝐔𝐒 I have written half a dozen letters since breakfast (completed up to now) I have been writing letters all the morning. (I am still writing now) He has been taking photos. (He is probably still carrying his camera) He has taken photos (This action may or may not be very recent) Examples : The Present Perfect Tense : I have done my homework (finished). I have spilled my coffee. I have already eaten my lunch. I have just heard the news. Have you ever played cricket? She has developed some very strange habits lately. He has not finished his work yet. I have never heard anything so ridiculous. Have you seen any good films recently? He has picked hundreds of apples. He has not phoned me for two weeks. I have seen migratory birds in thousands in this area. It is the first time he has driven a car. He has never driven a car. That is the third time he has phoned her this evening. This is the most boring film I have ever seen. I have visited my daughter at the hospital, she has just had a baby. He has gone to London.(He is in London now, or on his way to London). He has been to London. (He is not in London now, he has come back). He has been to London several times this year. I have been to the movies twice this week. The Present Perfect Continuous Tense : I have been doing my homework for two hours (not finished). They have been building the bridge for several years. I have been working since six this morning. He has been picking apples all afternoon. Lately I have been spilling my coffee a lot, I am so clumsy! She has been learning English for six years. I have been waiting here for nearly an hour. We have been watching TV since 2 p.m. I have been looking for you for the last half hour. Since when has it been raining? How long have you been learning English? He has been lying there for three hours. (I have been busy this week) I have been visiting my daughter at the hospital. Leila has been running a lot lately (a new and more temporary activity) Present Perfect focuses on completion/result while Present Perfect Continuous focuses on (continuous) activity. I have been reading 'David Copperfield' this week. (I am still reading) I have read 'David Copperfield' this week. (I finished the book during the week) I have read your book. (focus on completion) I have been reading your book (focus on continuous activity) Sorry about the mess --- I have been painting the house. (focus on continuous activity, painting the house.) I have painted the rooms since lunchtime. (focus on completion, painted the rooms) Present perfect continuous tense is used to emphasize the fact that an action has been uninterrupted, even though it is not continuing now. I'm cold because I have been swimming for an hour.(not swimming now, uninterrupted action) I'm very tired; I have been running round the town all day. (not running round now) Your clothes are dirty. What have you been doing? (not doing now) You are very tired. Have you been running? (not running now) State verbs (own, contain, exit, belong, matter, mean, know, understand, remember, love, like, depend on, consist of, deserve, seem etc.) cannot usually be continuous. We cannot normally use the continuous form for a state. They have had the car for ten years. We have never been happy here. He has been ill since last Monday. We have been in Delhi for a long time. They have known each other since they were at school. For actions repeated over a long period ---- I have been collecting stamps since I was a child. I have collected stamps since I was a child. 'Live' and 'Work' can be used in present perfect and present perfect continuous with little difference in meaning. I have lived in London for seven years. (I am still living in London) I have been living in London for seven years. (I am still living in London) He has been working in the same job for twenty years. (He is still working) He has worked in the same job for twenty years. (He is still working) How long have you been working here?/How long have you worked here? We prefer the present perfect continuous for more temporary actions and situation. When we talk about more permanent (long-lasting) situations, we prefer the present perfect. That man has been standing on the corner all day. For 900 years, the castle has stood on the hill above the village. I have not been working very well recently. He has not worked for years. My parents have lived in Bristol all their lives. A repeated action in the present perfect can sometimes be expressed as a continuous action by the present perfect continuous. I have knocked five times. I don't think anyone is in. I have been knocking. I do not think anyone is in.
