Lady Bird was a very elegant Southern Lady. She really loved being first lady. I love the elegance of Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Johnson and the way they loved the White House and grounds.

Near the end of the video, mention was made of the fact that President Johnson had been hospitalized before Christmas Day with the flu. This was no ordinary flu. He had the Hong Kong Flu (H3N2 strain), a global pandemic that rapidly spread across the United States in December 1968. It is believed that the Hong Kong Flu first was brought into the country by troops returning from Southeast Asia and embarking in California. Schools and colleges began closing around December 10th and did not reopen for at least a month. I contracted the flu at my college that week, and woke up with a raging case the morning after I arrived home. It's no exaggeration for me to say that if I contracted that same flu today in my 70s, it is doubtful that I would survive it.

Notice at 24:50 during the Cabinet meeting that President Johnson is informed of the possibility of another winter or spring offensive by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. That very thing had happened in late January 1968 when they had unleashed the massive Tet Offensive throughout South Vietnam. While ultimately deemed militarily "unsuccessful" by General Abrams and other American military experts, there is no question that the Tet Offensive triggered two events at home that dramatically changed the course of the November 1968 presidential election. First, Senator Robert Kennedy changed his mind about not running for president, and he announced his candidacy for the office at a packed press conference in DC on March 16, 1968. Then two weeks later, President Johnson announced that he would neither seek nor accept the nomination of his party to run for a second full term as president.

How many Dads missed being with their kids that Christmas due to Vietnam? And more importantly, how many would never, ever spend another Christmas?

His Presidency began with the assassination of JFK, and ended with half a million American troops stationed in Vietnam. While LBJ achieved great things for Civil Rights and the Great Society, he will always be remembered for these two national tragedies. They loom so large that they overshadow everything.
