It’s crazy Michael Cain called it when Alfred first did the trick. He said he had a double but Danton didn’t want to believe it was that simple. The most powerful line was when Michael Cain told Danton “remember when I told you my friend said drowning was peaceful? I lied he said it was the most horrific pain in the world”. Then you realize the amount of pain all those clones or Danton felt drowning.

Fun history lesson: the Chinese magician with the fish bowl trick was a real magician. Not only was he not old and frail, he wasn’t even Chinese. In hindsight it's amazing to realize that Borden really didn't know what knot had been tied on Angier's wife. Someone even pointed out to me, he probably had never gotten the *instruction* to tie the simpler knot.
@MrVicbryant
@MrVicbryant 3 жыл бұрын
While this is possible, the traditional take on this is that he doesn't know if he tied the safe or risky knot because it was the other brother. Each brother shows different traits, such as one is empathic and level headed, while the other is brash and a risk taker. The funeral is attended by the empathic brother, who feels as if he needs to attend to pay his respects to the wife, but can't answer the question as it was the brash brother who was willing to go along with the wife and tie a more complex knot. I say it would be unlikely that the level headed brother would be willing to go with the complex knot without all parties being aware of the increased risk.

If "The Prestige" came out AFTER "The Dark Knight", it'd be much more well known. Every Nolan film after "The Dark Knight" received an insane amount of hype because of the success of TDK. So, because "The Prestige" came out before Nolan's game-changing superhero epic, it gets completely overshadowed. It's a shame cuz it's one of his best films ever.

I'm not sure how a movie that received near universal critical acclaim, was nominated for multiple Oscars, made back 9 times its budget, has featured on several lists of best films ever made and been preserved by the US Library of Congress in the National Film archive as aesthetically and culturally significant can be said to be 'underrated'. This movie is one of his best and every repeat viewing of the movie you pick up on different things. My latest revelation was that when Angier asks Alfred which knot did he tie and Alfred said he didn't know......I now realize because Angier was asking the twin that didn't tie the knot so he legitimately did not know which knot was tied. Christopher Nolan is one of the best filmmakers because at the end of each movie you are mentally exhausted! Great reactions, keep up the good work.

So true. Before watching this film again recently had discovered that in the book, the twins combine their names- Albert and Frederick - to create their shared identity. That I have fought with myself over that night, one half of me swearing blind that I tied a simple slipknot, the other half convinced that I tied the Langford double.". A fun thing to do while watching this movie again is trying to identify which brother Christian Bale is playing in each of his scenes. Was it Alfred or Freddy that accidentally caused Julia's death? Why can't they agree on which knot was tied? Which one got his fingers shot off by Robert? Who's left alive in the end? Is he the little girl's father or uncle? From the acting to the dialogue, there are so many hints that give you a whole new perspective on what was actually going on.

@@TheKaileylusby My take is that the father survived b/c Sarah's husband tends to be the calmer one while Olivia's boyfriend is the brash one. Hence, one is accusing and the other is denying.

@@Nic-ye2yz Agreed. I think Freddy caused most of the problems w/ Robert, and Alfred was caught up in the whole thing. Not an evil brother, just a reckless one who was motivated to be the best. This movie is not only about a competition between magicians but it’s actually a metaphor about the competition between Tesla and Edison.

Definitely one of my all time favorites! One of those you can go back and watch several times to see things you didn't before. Plus, it's cool that the story involves Tesla - a true magician.

In an up and down career (to me), The Prestige is far and away his best. The twists and turns make the movie enthralling, it tells it's story in his signature non-linear timeline but it doesn't feel forced or like it's the entire gimmick like Dunkirk. It's immaculate

It´s true, real life magicians are pretty impressive people. For instance David Blane could hold his breath under water for over ten minutes. He would have had no problem with this trick,even if stuff went wrong, he could have easily waited until someone rescued him...

I remember reading Roger Ebert's review when this movie first came out - he described the tone as "atmospheric, obsessive, almost satanic." And I have to agree - in the best way. :)

I normally don't love twist endings but this is an example where it absolutely works. The twist is earned and it also fits the theme since the movie is all about trickery and misdirection.

"Alfred" is Michael Caine. There was a time in which the joke was made that Michael Caine was in every film made. He was a truly amazing actor. I used to not miss a single film that he was in. I've had to see a lot of films. Good and bad. Hahaha. Haven't seen him in quite some time. Did he retire?

If you thought the film was dark, just wait until you read the book that it was based on. The rivalry between the characters continues for generations in their families. To the point where a grandchild is killed in the process.

It doesn't matter if clone or original Danton was drowned because clone was identical copy of Danton so both of had same memories and thought process so they both thought they were originals and didn't care that other one drowned because they thought drowned one was copy, it doesn't matter which one is which.
