The person she is missing is guitar player James Honeyman-Scott, who had recently died from a drug overdose.

When it was released, I had the same reaction as you guys, beautiful song. Wasn’t until a few years later that I found out what she was writing about. Made the song hit differently. Lost a friend to cancer and every time I hear it now, it elicits a tear. Still a beautiful song though and one of my Xmas favourites. Love the channel.

This was a great band. Chrissie Hynde was and still is a great performer and I'm always in the mood to hear her voice!

This band hardly put a foot wrong when it came to releasing singles, and along with Greg Lake are responsible for one of the finest Christmas songs with this beauty. Also worth playing is Jethro Tull's "Ring Out (Solstice Bells)" if you like a touch of Yuletide flute! 🎅

This song always makes me cry. You can hear in the lyrics and Chrissie’s voice that she truly misses her friend(s). Sadly - He’s not the only member of this band to succumb to drug overdose.

This song was inspired by the death of James Honeyman-Scott, the Original guitarist in the band.

That jangly guitar sound is so good, reminiscent of The Byrds' Roger McGuinn's distinctive Rickenbacker 12-string sound, although I think The Pretenders' Robbie McIntosh actually played a Fender Telecaster on 2000 Miles.

A great reaction, thank you. The Pretenders are a great band, tracks to check out by them are, "Stop Your Sobbing" (cover of a song by 'The Kinks'), "Kid", "Talk of The Town", "Brass in Pocket", "Don't Get me Wrong", "I Go to Sleep", "Message of Love", "Hymn to Her", "Middle of The Road", "Night in My Veins", there are other tracks of course but these are some of their better ones, in my opinion.

Hi, Hi, Hi there. It's about the journey of the three wise men following the star. The people they're missing are their loved ones they've left behind to follow the star to Bethlehem. And all the hardships they've endured in the 2,000 miles for the sake of this. But they're not downhearted, for some reason they feel the importance of this journey. It feels like Christmas time. Thanks for doing this one. It's such a atypical sort of Christmas song. Very poignant.

That's weird, the video KZbin is serving up to me isn't about that at all.

@@140cabins what video are you watching? The one with Chrissie Hynde dressed as a Salvation Army and people messing around in the polar? That seems to suggest Santa Claus and doesn't reflect lyrically. But if you just listen to the words, well....... Videos don't always reflect what a song is about, that one is just snowy, Christmassy and a bit vague. But listen to the words, it's one of the three wise men, with him enduring and how he's feeling as he makes his journey and even the dreams he's having as he's drawn to follow.....he's not sure what, but something important. Even though it's been 2,000 miles. Keep that in mind as you listen to it. It's a bit holier and deeper than your average Christmas song. This is why it's one of my favourite Christmas songs. There's no other that really reflects, in an indirect way, the birth of Christ, seen through the lens of one of the players in the scene. And it's not as trite as The Little Drummers Boy. This one, IMHO, has a kind of magic about it.

I don’t think of any of that when I hear this song and I don’t know how you can presume to know what she was thinking when she wrote it. To me, it’s just about missing a loved one. As a matter of fact, I heard it’s a tribute to The Pretenders late guitar player James Honeyman-Scott. Oh well, to each their own.

What I get from this song is that it's sung from the perspective of a military wife of a man who's been sent to war. Another good Christmas song in the same vein is Stop The Cavalry.

@robbie007 The song was written by her as a melancholy ode for her original lead guitarist James Honeyman-Scott who had died in 1982 from an overdose at just 25. He's gone 2000 miles and she misses him.........

One of the few Christmas songs I really like, 'Tattooed Love Boys' 'Private Life' and 'Precious' from their absolute killer debut album would be good next choices, there are singles of the album but I'm pretty sure everybody already knows those, plus album tracks or lesser known tracks can often contain a bands best work.

Great song... It must have been quite a surprise at the time to see The Pretenders do a song like this. Hate to pester you about a request I have already made, but I want to make sure that you view the right clip if you decide to react to the song. ''Santa Never Made It into Darwin Bill & Boyd'' (uploaded by Roodog Cull). The Roodog Cull upload (which I believe comes up first in search results) shows the footage of the damage which is important. Other clips on YT shows images of modern Darwin (who cares), scenes from some movie, images of Bill and Boyd, lyrics.. The Roodog Cull version is the most effective. Reading up on the Christmas Eve Cyclone Tracy wiki might also help understand the song.

Chrissie Hynde, the thinking man's Blondie. Another 'not overtly christmassy ' Christmas song you might like to check out is Winter Song by Lindisfarne, it conjures up a different side to this time of year.
