What's the real cost of the way we are fishing in Aotearoa? Who's winning? Who's losing? And will there be enough fish for our grandchildren?
A documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Mike Bhana and Wild Film, that examines how effective NZ's Quota Management System has really been and what is the REAL cost to our marine environment.
For more information and to find out how we can fix these problems, visit rescuefish.co.nz

Societies founded in colonisation have more mythtakes than any other because colonisers always redefine their acquisition of someone else’s authority as some kind of justifiable or even noble act. They misremember what happens with mythtaken origin stories where a pretence of honour and legality obscures the fact that colonisation has no real visions of justice or freedom except for the colonisers themselves

@@margaretsimeon62 so thats one there are over 200 countries, and if you think what is now saudi arabia has not been fought over you are mistaken. Regardless of your misanthropy the fisheries resource belongs to all of the people of this country. My point is that it is not a shared resource. Your point is ? That Europeans should never have come here?. I doubt we can unscramble that egg, and Maori were allocated 20% of the entire resource, much of which they didn't traditionally fish.

It’s a massive eye opener, from a kiwi living overseas and looking to return to home to New Zealand it’s saddening to see what our “world class fisheries management infrastructure” really is like! Clearly we can’t rely on the government as demonstrated by the past and present to act in good faith to properly manage our fishery. It looks like there is a well researched and sensible solution however. Whether you take a few fish from time to time or just enjoy getting out there on the water on a regular basis this needs addressing not just talking about. Every kiwi I know loves fresh seafood, we need to get on top of this now and hoping someone else will sort it isn’t going to be enough. If you haven’t signed the petition to support change you really have to if we have any hope of leaving our fishery in better shape for our future kiwis. Great work on the documentary guys‼️

Sad to see this all happening Mike. I remember you and your Dad catching great snapper when you lived in Modena Cres. Even 15 years ago the fishing in the harbour was much better than it is now. I can only imagine the court cases though if the government tries to take back those 'property rights' that were freely given away however eventually something needs to be done to restore some balance and sanity to our fisheries.

Excellent documentary - although a very sobering watch. I can also recommend another documentary called “The end of the line” which deals with the state of worldwide fisheries. Plenty of commentators here are probably upset, exasperated & feel powerless to affect change, and asking what they can do to help. My suggestion : support groups such as Legasea who work tirelessly to bring about change - even if it’s just a donation to help them persist, and fight on our behalf.

Hi there. Thanks for your message. We had great feedback about the video and it created a lot of distrust in the current fisheries management system and the ministry. We created this as part of a campaign to get NZ to look at an alternative management system we have called Rescue Fish. You can see more details here; rescuefish.co.nz/ But change is slow and the issue is very complicated. This is a long term objective. So while we haven't had any direct changes from the documentary, we are steadily building public support for change. And we are getting more action on things like cameras on boats. If you would like to get in touch to discuss further, please contact us on support@legasea.co.nz. Good luck with your own project!

Hi there it is interesting to watch this video and it's amazing to hear how many tons of fish is consumed each year. I have watched a few videos on the problem of seas being over fished world wide. I come from Eastern Europe where we have no seas around to fish . we look towards lake fishing for or river fishing to eat fish. Now what I don't understand is why in countries like yours and other sea fishing countries do not try to move or at least try to introduce coarse fish to the public. I know not all coarse fish taste great but there are a good few species that are very tasty. For example America has the problem of the Japanese Carp being invasive in there rivers. At first they caught the fish and turned it into fishmeal and now they have introduced it as part of the food chain because they have realised it a cheaper source of tasty fish on the menu for millions of people. Catfish , Carp of all species is a tasty fish ,Sturgeon , Pike Zander ,Bream. and many more. As a individual I cannot comment on the sea fish around your countries coast as for taste but I honestly think that sea fishing countries are crying about the over fishing crisis around the world and they need to try and change direction to solve this problem . You cannot try to be complaining about the situation and not doing anything .Conservation is the other thing that is killing the fishing as well because you have a lot more seal ,sharks and other fish eating more of the fish stock around the world . Hefty fines need to be introduce or even boats or ships being taken away from people that over fish the oceans by law. Every body is crying wolf but nothing is being done . That my way of thinking anyway..

The question came up in the comments: "What can we do to help?" The answer is to enlist Oceanic Mercenaries to start attacking the large commercial fishing vessels if things don't change soon. Put an end to those pirates! We need to protect ourselves and our interests if these criminals are damaging our fisheries and putting our lives in jeopardy. "An eye for an eye" stipulates that if they offend us, we must retaliate in kind. Get rid of their ships so they can't threaten your lives. It's not just because a few wealthy people who are out to make a profit think it's okay. There is a plethora of legislation that is morally questionable, unfair, completely made up, and illegally exploitative. It's bloody time axction is taken to save our natural resources - to hell with the Monopolists.

This is another, ill avoid mentioning the real solution because the answer is not paletable and I do not want to be cancelled. 1, More people, means more demand on energy, electrical goods, heating, cooking, air con, food, beit fish or farm. 2, Demand drives destruction. 3,Look at Ethiopia, starving until live aid interveened with a population of 40 million, now returned to breeding health, there are now 118 million. 4, All the BS about climate change and carbon neutral is exactly that. 5, Todays youth are destroying the planet with their insatiable appetite for all electronic goods from phones, computers, computer games, cars and cheap fast food. LegaSea - More Fish In The Water "Here's a follow up from our pink maomao post the other day: Today New Zealand Sport Fishing Council Inc members are meeting with senior MPI officials to discuss implementation of regulations around pink maomao. Tairua locals are unhappy as new video evidence has been released showing recreational fishers coming into Tairua with over 1000 pink maomao caught. It is vague as to whether this catch was food for these people, but it possible by the number of fish caught that it is intended to sell illegally. There are no bag or size limits for pink maomao and like a range of other reef species, they do not fall under finfish regulations. This commercial-level exploitation is disheartening to see, and morally corrupt unconstrained harvesting behaviour needs to be stopped. Since 2019 the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council has been advocating for a recreational limit of 3 maomao per person, per day, in the Auckland Fisheries Management Area that includes Tairua. We also advocate for a ban on commercial fishing for pink maomao and other vulnerable reef species." www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/fishermen-filmed-with-thousands-of-pink-maomao-in-bins-in-tairua/TOLOSXOST56XJTYJSU5SKUEBSU/?fbclid=IwAR3GnZilxn3nfJpQKh4PdsBQ_FzFpswgcsvb8mWyloIc75G4yqRvOgQnnvM

Brilliant work Stitch and Mike et al, much respect. "24. Jellyfish have assumed a primary role in the oceans of the world (26 September 2013 issue of the New York Times Review of Books, in a review of Lisa-ann Gershwin’s book, Stung! On Jellyfish Blooms and the Future of the Ocean): “We are creating a world more like the late Precambrian than the late 1800s - a world where jellyfish ruled the seas and organisms with shells didn’t exist. We are creating a world where we humans may soon be unable to survive, or want to.” Jellyfish contribute to climate change via (1) release of carbon-rich feces and mucus used by bacteria for respiration, thereby converting bacteria into carbon dioxide factories and (2) consumption of vast numbers of copepods and other plankton."
