Go visit your local MP and tell them you expect them to do better. We want more fish in the water. We want bottom trawling out of inshore waters to protect sensitive and nursery areas so small fish can thrive. Thanks for asking.

Any updates on the state of the scallop population there today?

There have been no further surveys of the scallop population in the Coromandel management area, including Opito Bay, since 2022. Currently Fisheries NZ are discussing how to manage the fishery in the future, and we are part of those discussions. The Minister’s 2023 decision letter provides details on the estimated stock status of the Coromandel scallop fishery. On page 2 you will note his comments regards: 1. Extensive surveys in 2021 led to closure of the Coromandel fishery, except for two areas. 2. Further surveys were carried out in 2022. The results of these surveys revealed serious declines in scallop abundance and density (how many per sq metre). Approx 85% in biomass of legal size scallops in one of the open areas. And a 37% decline in the other open area. 3. Based on the results, the Minister announced on 17 March 2023, a closure to all commercial and recreational harvest of scallops from the Coromandel fishery. 4. The Minister directed Fisheries NZ to work with other interests to gather further information to inform a future review within 3 years. 5. Fuller details are online here - Minister's 2023 decision letter here. www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Coromandel-scallop-decision-Mar23.pdf Review of Coromandel fishery here. www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/coromandel-scallop-closure-and-tac-review-2023/ thanks.

I have to say, the presenters on this video are talking absolute trash. For starters, a net that you can fly a 747 into, yes those nets do exist but they are not nets that scrape along the seabed, they are midwater trawls for catching pelagic species like herring and Mackerel. In our country (Scotland) these vessels are strictly monitored and regulated. Most are tied up in port 8-9 months of the year The Seafloor taking 7 years to recover.... I was the skipper of a fishing vessel for over 30 years. my Father and Grandfather were skippers before me, in fact our family has a documented history of fishing that goes back 700 years. For around 600 of those year's we have fished the same areas of the North Sea. We go back and fish the same fishing grounds week in and week out. If fishing is so bad for the Seabed why are we still catching fish there?

Must be a hidden part of NZ fisheries. The atrocity that is the Ross Sea Tooth Fish quota. Scientists have been lobbying NZ government for many years trying to get some form of "cease and desist" on this deep sea fish that has an estimated lifespan of 50 or more years. But no, money is king, NOT nature. They scientists themselves are trying to understand the lifespan, reproduction and nursery of this fish.

The question came up in the comments: "What can we do to help?" The answer is to enlist Oceanic Mercenaries to start attacking the large commercial fishing vessels if things don't change soon. Put an end to those pirates! We need to protect ourselves and our interests if these criminals are damaging our fisheries and putting our lives in jeopardy. "An eye for an eye" stipulates that if they offend us, we must retaliate in kind. Get rid of their ships so they can't threaten your lives. It's not just because a few wealthy people who are out to make a profit think it's okay. There is a plethora of legislation that is morally questionable, unfair, completely made up, and illegally exploitative. It's bloody time axction is taken to save our natural resources - to hell with the Monopolists.

Hi there. Thanks for your message. We had great feedback about the video and it created a lot of distrust in the current fisheries management system and the ministry. We created this as part of a campaign to get NZ to look at an alternative management system we have called Rescue Fish. You can see more details here; rescuefish.co.nz/ But change is slow and the issue is very complicated. This is a long term objective. So while we haven't had any direct changes from the documentary, we are steadily building public support for change. And we are getting more action on things like cameras on boats. If you would like to get in touch to discuss further, please contact us on [email protected]. Good luck with your own project!

I've been diving our coast since the late 70's, what a change ive seen from snorkling off a beach and getting a feed of scallops to now seeing them gone. It is like watching our entire marine ecosystem disappear in slow motion. The scary thing is we have Fisheries NZ and ministers needing to step up to the plate and fix it, problem is they are the ones that in my book let it happen, none have the enough big ones to rain in the big commercial fishing companies who have proven time and time again they are not responsible operators. The only way we can sort this is have people or scientists make decisions based on what is best for the enviroment, not the commercial fishing industry. Until that happens i doubt it will improve, We have watched the Muscle reefs of the gulf get destroyed now the scallops nationally Crayfish are on there last legs, and many of the fish species are struggling. Just look at the once abundant TARAKIHI. To Often we make the right decision to cut numbers etc when it is easy to make..and thats when theres nothing left to take, We have just done this with scallops. If god could see what some of our people are doing i am sure he would cry

Humans are killing the planet. It is only a matter of time before we become extinct. The Earth will recover and a new balanced ecosystem will emerge. We are horrible creatures: greedy, selfish, stupid and plunderers. If we look back five thousand years we see evidence of human activity such a religious structures, the pyramids or cave drawings even. Looking five thousand years into the future we will not be around anymore. In 1900 the human population was around one billion; today it is around seven billion people. The doubling of the human population is taking less and less time. Do we really believe this can just continue? Last year we killed around 100 million sharks. For what? Just the fins. It is beyond belief. The sooner humans are gone the sooner the planet can recover from the assault we have been inflicting on the Earth.

This is another, ill avoid mentioning the real solution because the answer is not paletable and I do not want to be cancelled. 1, More people, means more demand on energy, electrical goods, heating, cooking, air con, food, beit fish or farm. 2, Demand drives destruction. 3,Look at Ethiopia, starving until live aid interveened with a population of 40 million, now returned to breeding health, there are now 118 million. 4, All the BS about climate change and carbon neutral is exactly that. 5, Todays youth are destroying the planet with their insatiable appetite for all electronic goods from phones, computers, computer games, cars and cheap fast food. CONCLUSION, TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET AND INCREASING. NOT ROCKET SCIENCE BUT NO ONE DARE SAY IT. Except for David Attenborough.

So, a massive AWESOME to all LegaSeas hard work and passion for our moana, which is a Taonga and not something to be "raped"/dredged etc, through greed for profit or to feed your need if the balance and harmony of species is out of kilter. I'm seeing a huge change, and very worried about our oceans future. Remember, nearly 50%of our oxygen, that humans need for life, to breathe, comes from tiny ,vital, microscopic marine creatures in our oceans. With sea temperatures soaring ,90%of earth's oceans, we don't have long Whanau, fellow humans before life, let alone the major currents at their slowest flow rate ever, collapse. Very dire times indeed, so put all your awareness into educating others, friends, Whanau, family, communities, in order to help our moana, our oceans, stay living!!! And thank you LegaSea.
