I put straight dirt in my tank with real plants the plants take root in the soil. The plants use the fish waist. After a few months the tank takes care of it's self in a mostly natural way. Yes it works and crystal clear water

@@RogerKeulenI recommend looking at the channel Luke's Goldies for some basic insight into growing regular plants above the tank and using them to filter the tank (iirc he uses pothos) and serpa design for some really cool designs working with plant filtration (both plants that grow in and above the water) and some more info on the topic from someone who does it with some of his tanks for years now!

I did a 5 gallon which is immensely healthy running on no filter for maybe $50, could have done it cheaper. I got a used old tank on Facebook ($15), got sand from beach and cleaned readily, a bit of organic potting soil I already had for the bottom layer (maybe $1 worth max), got drift wood from beach and soaked / boiled several times to clean and remove tannins, got jars of leaf litter and water from several nearby ponds / creeks to create a bacterial and small critter culture which I added into the tank (at least 5 mollusk / crustacean species hitched along for the ride). Then bought cuttings from a local aquarist at $10. Bought an aquarium light, but you can use any cheap grow bulb with a used lamp fixture. I’ve also setup multiple other mini aquariums in my house for free after the fact. All you need is: a container, a small layer of soil, a small layer of sand to put on top of the soil, aquatic plant cuttings (When I trim my aquarium I put the cuttings in jars with dechlorinated water which become their own mini aquariums and let me plant future builds for free, and water from a living system. If you’re OK with just snails it’ll work great as is. If you want tiny caradina or neocaradina shrimp you aught to go at the very minimum 2 gallons for a single shrimp, I inadvertently created a shrimp colony in one of my 2 gallon cutting jars and they’re doing alright. If you want fish do a minimum of 5 gallons for the tiniest fish available, but 10 gallons is a better starting point. Also realize that this approach of cheapo aquariums is best for use without fish. But trust me if yo uptake lots of freshwater leaf litter and water samples to inoculate your tank and only grow shrimp in it there will be soooo much life you can observe without fish eating all the small microfauna. Try it out with whatever you have! River sand works as well! All you truly need to buy are cuttings of plants & don’t bother buying from a pet store, wayyyy too overpriced.

@@knightknight7811 Aquasoil begins to break down after about a year. If your water was cloudy day one, it's cause you failed to wash it. The breakdown is slow, but after 2 years, it'll be visible, and moving the substrate will allow you to see some granules fall apart. After 3, it's mud. If you are running a long term tank, cap your aquasoil.

Here I’ll also show how I did my 55 gal sorority tank First I got a second hand used 55 gal for about 50 dollars I think it was, it had a stand and all. It’s hard to find cheaper tanks in good condition but I got lucky. My sand was 5 dollars for two bags and I got a bunch of small plants that will grow. I searched a beach for drift wood and rocks and soaked them both to get rid of salt water. Filter and stuff was free (also second hand) and whatever the price if for filter cartridges.

$29 for 3 hands full of gravel?! just grab some fine, 2-6mm, crushed basalt from a local gravel supplier.
