I remember being on vacation with my parents in Atlantic City, NJ that night. Rooming house we stayed at had no television, just beds, sink and a tiny bathroom down the hall. We boys walked along the boardwalk and felt cold air coming out of a doorway at a boardwalk shop that housed a fortune teller. It must have been a slow night so the man invited us teenage boys in to cool off and watch "The Jerry Lewis Show" on his 21-inch color television. The huge wooden cabinet took up most of the little waiting room. He bragged that he put up a big antenna on top of a tower on the roof and brought in all seven New York channels.

Same here! 😎 I was born the next morning, it's very possible our TV set was on one of these programs at that time. I know that mom was a fan of The Lucy show, and I think Ben Casey as well. I have always enjoyed the Lucy show myself and used to watch the reruns with my mom sometimes . I still watch the Alfred Hitchcock hour rerun sometimes LOL, always been a fan of his work.

It's so random what shows made it and what shows didn't. It had to cost a fortune to produce a season of episodes for every series and have most of them canceled before the second season, never to be seen again. Fortunately we have FredFlix to give them some attention. Thanks.

Great memories of many of these shows. Also I couldn't wait for the T.V Guide to come out each September back then of all the new programs coming out. Never heard of Karen or Wendy and Me. I knew right away who the real Berry Gordy was. He was having an affair with Diana Ross. Florence Ballard's fate was a tragedy. Inger Stevens was so beautiful. I was 11 years old in 1965 and my family had moved into our new home one year earlier....no more renting little apartments. I would be starting school again in two months. I remember the excitement of the new shows for September and the dread of another year in a Catholic School. Through it all there was a youthful optimism that you slowly lose over the years. Like "this year will be better" than the last.

And I LOVED I've Got A Secret on Buzzr. They took all of their old black and white shows off the channel for some reason. And I know my father would not be watching The Lucy Show, he hated Lucy. I can remember when we went to the Drive in Movie on either Friday or Saturday Nights and after the first movie was over the second movie started. It was Yours Mine And Ours, starring Henry Fonda and ; Lucille Ball. My dad said something like " We're leaving, I'm not gonna watch Lucy". Just about 1 1/2 weeks before I was born. :) MeTV is rerunning VOYAGE as part of its "Sci-Fi Saturday NIght". I can tell at the end after the announcer repeats the show's title that he's about to mention the show's sponsor that week. KAREN was the lone survivor of 90 BRISTOL COURT, which NBC premiered 9 months earlier to the day. NBC cancelled the other 2 shows, HARRIS AGAINST THE WORLD and TOM DICK & MARY, replacing them w/ HULLABALOO in January, then replacing KAREN that fall with a 1/2 hour version of HULLABALOO. Debbie Watson had a contract with Universal which led her to star in ABC's TAMMY in the fall, then she took over the role of Marilyn from Pat Priest in the Munster movie "Munster Go Home". I've read that she was going to take over the role permanently if CBS had renewed THE MUNSTERS. I'm guessing that on TTTT #1 is Berry Gordy, Jr. I'm not sure though. I've seen WENDY AND ME on CBN, back when it reran lots of classic sitcoms that hadn't been rerun much. From what I read, George Burns didn't allow his wife Gracie to watch the show before its premiere, and she died that previous fall never having seen it. I'm guessing that ANDY WILLIAMS ad is from the Paducah/Evansville Edition of TV Guide, where channel 6 was (and still is) in Paducah, KY (also covering Harrisburg, IL & Cape Girardeau, MO) and channel 14 was (and still is) in Evansville, IN. THE LUCY SHOW had a different opening in Season 3 from that syndicated kaleidoscope opening, which CBS slapped on all its daytime reruns, with a B&W version for the Season 1 reruns. Desilu starting filming the show in color in Season 2, but CBS refused to air it in color until Season 4. Bill Paley didn't want RCA (NBC's owner) to sell any color sets until he gave up the fight (and falling ratings for B&W shows in homes with color sets) and went mostly to color fall 1965. Lifebuoy is a product of Unilever (then Lever Bros.), which was a long time sponsor of her shows through HERE'S LUCY. This was the last of Alfred Hitchcock's 10 consecutive seasons on tv, bouncing between 1/2 hour & hour formats and CBS & NBC.

I know THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW and PERRY MASON ( except one episode) which would conclude their runs the following season were aired in b/w . The game shows would also continue to air in b/w until the fall of 1966. HOGANS HEROES pilot/ first episode was shot in b/w but the remainder of the series was shot in color. Also premiering in color that fall was GREEN ACRES. THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, PETTICOAT JUNCTION , THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES and THE LUCY SHOW all switched to color. Other shows and new series ( not all ) airing in b/w included. WILD, WILD WEST, THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW , THE MUNSTERS, RAWHIDE ( concluding it's run in early January of 66), THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SHOW( not their later variety series), THE TRIALS OF O'BRIEN ( Starring Peter Falk). and GUNSMOKE.

Richard Denning ( KAREN) would come out of semi - retirement in 1968 to take on the recurring role of Governor Jameson on the original HAWAII FIVE O. SUMMER PLAYHOUSE replaced THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW that summer . It consisted of unsold television pilots and ran during the summer season from 1964 67. THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW which ended production the previous season was used as a summer time slot filler replacing MANY HAPPY RETURNS that starred John McGiver and Elinore Donahue. Reruns of THE FARMERS DAUGHTER replaced THE BING CROSBY SHOW. NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS and WENDY & ME Starring Connie Stevens and George Burns each lasted one season. Fred, I have to ask, does this Cathleen Nesbitt (8:01 on "The Farmer's Daughter" ) is somehow related (Grandma?) to Flight Attendant / YT Creator KAT NESBITT? (that last name is uncommon enough not to notice and both have variants of the same first name)

I prefer the way programs were introduced years ago. Everything was like a special 'event' and you rushed to the tv to watch. Now they even overlap end credits with commercials or the next show. I want the announcer back! And the 'brought to you by....' lol.

It's a fun show. I wish I knew what the other two parts of the 90 minute, 3 in 1 sitcom "90 Bristol Court" were like. UCLA Film Library may have one complete 90 Bristol Court. As you may know from the comments KAREN was given the opportunity to finish out the season on its own. If they are still there, You Tube may have a few posted with the original Coke ads. These Coke ads are also posted separately on You Tube ("Things Go Better With Coke"). They're as fun as Karen is. And as noted, Coke also sponsored the "next door" ABC show, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, with the same basic ads.

Lila--- And thank you for your reply.. .I'm glad you noticed KAREN because as noted it's a fun, sweet natured show. I looked into it because I was curious about all the other shows that shared the night with Voyage, one of my very favorite Retro series. This season was Voyage's first and many of us Brine Opera fans enjoy that first season the most, as it was so rare until recently, being black and white. It's fortunate we have Karen available on the collector circuit, though it's likely that these are the post-Bristol Court shows (that is, from Jan.65 on). Original layout for 90 BRISTOL COURT featured 3 sets of characters based in an LA apartment court. And note the initials by the way. First show was "all family," KAREN. Second show was moving towards "adult" but not exclusively: Jack Klugman in HARRIS AGAINST THE WORLD. "Everyman" vs. the hassles of life. Critics liked this one best. Third installment was ...drumroll...the "most adult" and therefore scheduled last: TOM, DICK AND MARY. Medical intern and his wife, if I have this correctly, take in another intern as a boarder. 90 BRISTOL COURT was an interesting idea but CBSs half hours on Monday were a tough act to beat and NBC started its new Monday season on Oct.5, in which ABC already had a 3 week head start on the youth audience with its slate of new shows. (Ben Casey at 10 was the only veteran). DEBBIE WATSON was the "NBC ingenue" of the season, and it's likely that the network was aiming for a response to ABC s hit PATTY DUKE. As you'll note upon catching KAREN episodes (there still should be some posted on line; otherwise they are available on the collectors circuit), KAREN is a much more sedate show than PATTY DUKE but it still managed to charm the Teen Demographic and place the show and Miss Watson in the high end of the TVQ Poll ("Q" scores were recognition polls, not ratings) among the Teen audience (along with Voyage and No Time for Sergeants, also new Monday shows; and of course another freshman, Man From UNCLE which switched to Monday in January to replace the departed 90 Bristol dropouts). Miss Watson wound up getting attention from the Teen and Young Adult magazines like SEVENTEEN and COED among others. So it was not surprising that she got another shot at prime time the following year, 65 66, on ABCs TAMMY, a Friday sitcom based on the rural hijinks of "young people in love" originally offered in the movies ---Debbie Reynolds? I need to check. TAMMY only ran a season but as that year closed Miss Watson got the Marilyn Munster role in the theatrical film MUNSTERS GO HOME (TVs Marilyn wasn't too happy with that). I did not know this, but a "poster" here has mentioned that IF The Munsters had gotten a third season renewal, Miss Watson was likely the New Marilyn. (Don't know about Tammy, will have to look this up, but both 90 Bristol and Karen, and the Munsters, came out of the MCA/Universal factory.) Debbie Watson would largely depart from high visibility after all this, but was featured in one last display of note: a 1967-68 TV special that highlighted the "Newcomers (young actresses) of the Moment " or something like this --- most of the actresses being showcased had actually been on display since the early 60s like Debbie but all were delightful and remain fun for Retro fans to spot here and there. KAREN remains a fun artifact from the momentary "end" of preVietNam "fun and high spirits California youth hijinks" as shown on TV and in movies of the early 60s. PARADE magazine in summer 66 noted that many such shows had been retired that semester but didn't go into the reasons why. ABC, ostensibly the "TV Youth Leader," did offer a momentary comeback of sorts in the summer of 1967 with the Beach Antics of MALIBU U, a totally fun relic set entirely on the beach as a short run summer show. If you haven't seen it I recommend going to You Tube and watching guest Leonard Nimoy sing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Well, that was a wordy "thank you" but I hope you'll enjoy these Blasts From the Past as much as I do. It's what leads me to Fred's place. PS. A show that just missed Fred's list was another you might like if you like KAREN. It was The BING CROSBY SHOW, originally on ABC at 930. Here Bing is a family man with devoted wife (Beverly Garland, later Fred MacMurrays TV wife on My 3 Sons) and two amusing teen daughters, one a lively "four eyes", the other a budding "socialite". Another fun show in its own way, I'm a little surprised that it didn't make it. Bing also sings the "corny" but fun theme song. Copies I collected once from chroniclers like Fred featured original commercials (Lincoln-Mercury, etc). It's possible you may be able to find brief scenes and the opening theme on line, I hope. As noted on Fred's list, this show was retired in early summer 65 and replaced by Farmers Daughter, transferred from Fridays.

John K. Glad you asked that. KAREN is the lone survivor of a fall show, the 90 minute 90 BRISTOL COURT (note the initials)-- 3 sitcoms where the characters are based in the same apartment court. That COURT by the way might still be sitting in the trees at Universal Studios unless it's long gone. The experiment didn't work and two of the shows vacated the apartments after New Years. Their replacement at 8pm was MAN FROM UNCLE, a new show which NBC had originally scheduled for Tuesday at 830 but which had some tough sledding against Red Skelton and ABCs McHales Navy that previous fall. Karen was the lone COURT entry allowed to finish the season out. You Tube episodes may have Coke ads sung by a popular folk group, not sure which one(s). Coke also sponsored ABC s Voyage/Sea the same night so you got plenty of "Things Go Better With Coke" songs this evening (and note Coca Cola Ads in larger sized magazines in fall 64 promoting both shows (Voyage, Bristol Court), tiny "script" (sp.) running across the top of the ad. I want to do up a beach towel like that some day). WENDY was one of 3 ABC sitcoms coming in after Voyage who were charged with "knocking off" CBS s comedy lead that fall (64). SERGEANTS, WENDY and ME and THE BING CROSBY SHOW. ABC was programming to a younger audience here than CBS and optimists had high hopes for all this. Alas, CBS recovered momentum fast enough and WENDY and BING didn't maintain Traction. As noted, Farmers Daughter was shifted from Friday to Monday here replacing BING for the summer. The one-two tandem of Voyage and SERGEANTS more than commanded the opening half of the night (though the CBS game shows, favored by older audiences, were credited with the time period "win") until UNCLE came in at 8pm. Both Voyage and SERGEANTS had been set to continue on for next season in these same slots but at the very last minute SERGEANTS, far ahead of UNCLE in the Neilsen polls, was canceled just the same. Anticipating the possibility that UNCLE might remain on Monday and continue its rise, ABC shifted Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea to its best known slot, Sunday at 7, where the network had really always wanted it all along.

In the 60s you could usually assume that most great shows which made the switch from black and white to color would undergo a corresponding decline in script quality and story lines. Man from Uncle and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea were prime examples
