Well, Qatar is a small desert island in the Persian gulf. There are zero natural resources besides oil. They don’t even have fresh water. I think their only export is oil. I assume they have to import everything.

Qurans are heavy. Don’t know if you’ve held the actual book or not (especially one of the royal family which is made of leather and is decorated) but they can weigh up to around 30 or more pounds. That book rest at the bottom is unsupported, so its best that the glue be epoxy on epoxy and glue on wood. The corner bevel will BE supported however by the standing podium that sits on the floor itself and take most of the weight off that corner, so it wont matter if they use epoxy or glue there. Which the book open the weight will be evenly distributed and wont put strain on that corner so it wont give in the slightest, Quarns ive seen in house holds tend to be open to scriptures so that glue up wont be an issue. Hope this explanation helps.

Just my thoughts - when you cut them in half and then cut the angles to create the 170 degrees it lost the perfect flow of the timber and epoxy line on the front side. But the back side is perfect. I would say it’s more important to have the front perfect seamless join on the front than the back, so perhaps there could be a way to cut them at 90 degrees and then add an angled piece into the back to create the 170 degrees…? 🤷‍♂️
@BlackForestWoodCo
@BlackForestWoodCo 2 күн бұрын
The angle cut is to hold the Quran, not for looks
@alex98b627
@alex98b627 2 күн бұрын
@@BlackForestWoodCo yes I understand that the angle is to hold an open Quran, not just because you thought it would look nice to put an angle in... You may have misunderstood my comment - I was referring to the nice flow/line between the timber and the black epoxy which now has a small 'step' in it where the small amount of material was removed to create the angle (in the car world, this is like having slightly misaligned panels so the nice flow of panels is ruined - looking at your Cybertruck!) It's just a pity that it ruins that beautiful natural line. Whereas on the back, because there was no material removed (other than the thickness of the saw blade) the natural flow of the line still looks amazing. That's a more detailed explanation of what I see as a slight design (or maybe it's a process) error. My idea for a fix for this would be to cut the two halves at 90 degrees and then add a wedge in between to create the 170 degree angle. This would maintain the perfect, beautiful flow of the timber live edge from the angle that it will most common be viewed from - the front. So you could have the angle "to hold the Quran" and "for looks" - two birds...!

Been doing this longer than the guy in the pics has been alive and still have all my fingers intact because I know that things happen fast and plan for it. Use work holders!!! Question- how does this epoxy stuff look a few decades down the road? I have stuff out there from the early 80's that moved a lot but still looks good. Seems that the movement from your shop in the US to a desert environment would be difficult for the materials to deal with. Thanks
