At one point (sometime after 2000) a silent film from approximately 1890s to 1930s documenting cultures around the world when there was a absolute craze in Eugenics going through the western world. The one in particular was of women with bound feet. The western historians commenting on it were extemely surprised at the womens agilty to move around with bound feet. The women were walking the same as unbound feet. Which brought the whole notion and understanding (at least by the west) of bound feet being restricting into question. Its more to do with etiquette and to ensure they don't suffer from a misstep or they get caught amongst their clothes. Its the (kind of) similar to the west where noble/aristcratic women were escorted by men, linking their arms through the mens. In order to "help" the women walk and not trip and to lead them around.
