Emma D'Arcy, who now plays Rhaenyra was actually cast first, long before Milly Alcock was cast to play young Rhaenyra. The majority of the show takes place with Rhaenyra older, so Milly Alcock was only hired for the first few episodes. She was cast specifically because she looks like Emma D'Arcy when she was younger.

Every episode so far they have made it plain that a woman's duty to the realm - specifically a royal woman's - is to produce heirs. Rhaenyra *has* to have children, and Laenor isn't doing his part in that. This wasn't a moral failing on her part. She did what she had to do, and the only real mistake was doing it with someone without Valerian features. And Alicent can hold her kids up as better than, but none of Rhaenyra's kids are wanking in the window.

Rhaenyra and her husband made a deal that they could both have lovers. They would try to make children together but that obviously failed. They are friends and allies and he clearly care for his stepsons. He was in no way tricked into this situation. BUT the rest of the country wont care about their arrangement. She needed to have found a lover with the right hair color, for them to get away with it. Skin and facial structures don't matter that much. His skin isn't that dark and inherited facial features can go in unexpected directions. But that hair stands out like a beacon. Both in person and on any royal portraits. In the book, one of their kids grandmas had black hair, so they could try say that was it (convincing no one that it would happen 3 times). But the show doesn't even have that. Rhaenyra has unfortunately adopted a bit of her fathers trouble avoidance tendencies. Just ignoring big issues and pretending they aren't there until they explode in her face.

Lol Lol Rhaenyra is a beard my guy but unfortunately is also the heir to the throne. She HAS to have children. Her father stressed this to her in episode 3. She must get married and she must produce heirs. Unfortunately, circumstances landed her with a man that cannot give her children but as heir she cannot stay childless. Also, unlike with Daemon's marriage, Rhaenyra and Laenor did consummate their marriage so annulment is off the table and divorce didn't exist. You were married until one of u died. Harwin was from a pretty good family. His father was the King's hand and Harwin himself was heir to House Strong, Commander of The City Watch, and already had a bit of a crush on Rhaenyra. So he isn't a nobody and actually isn't a random lay lol. Harwin and Laenor obviously had an understanding as well. Tbh I personally believe Viserys approved the union even though he could not acknowledge it. If he acknowledged it he would have to put Harwin, possibly his hand, his own daughter and his grandchildren to death. The man already had to put his wife to death to try to save his son and he still lost him. He had to send the brother he loved away to protect the throne. The crown has cost Viserys almost everyone he loved and now he was being tasked to finish off Aemma's line because his daugther's husband is gay and so she found an alternative to continuing the line? You're asking for a lot from a father there lol. Rhaenyra's biggest mistake in all this was not finding a donor with Valyrian features.

She tried to produce heirs with Laenor but couldn't. He knows the children are Harwin Strong's but treats them as his own. Viserys probably knows but refuses to see it. To him, Rhaenrya can do no wrong, and to question her children's heritage is tantamount to treason in those days.

It’s not really that Viserys refuses to see it: he refuses to acknowledge it because he does not want to weaken her as heir. He wants to honor his late wife by supporting Rhaenyra as their one and only heir. Illegitimate kids make her succession uncertain and could trigger a war among pretenders. Best play dumb, which Viserys excels at, even if he actually is very clever.

You see the guilt he carries internally for his 1st wife, his love. He chose his dream over her and he carries the regret still, you can see it in his eyes anytime she is mentioned. (He's a good actor btw) All he has left from that time in his life is his daughter. He just has a softness towards her. Even when he was being stern, he was doing it in a compromising(trying to please her) type of way. He just has hope. A king needs to be stern across the board as his actions and more importantly his reactions are measured carefully around the realm. Hindsight is 20/20. He should have accepted the truth from the first time and revoked her as his heir instantly. He can't control what others do but he can control what he does himself. To remain a symbol of strength and justice he should have just revoked her title and gave it to his son. That's what other lords would have accepted (on both sides) and what the majority would have wanted but I think his brother should be the king. He's stronger inside and out. Daemon smacked Rhaenyra when she was really the Queen and he king consort. He has the right idea to remind her she is not to rule from a place of compromise and your reactions are more important than your actions at times.

Getting used to the newer actors actually became fun for me. Everyone does such a good job, and although it may be jarring at first, the new cast fits in seamlessly. The time jumps are super necessary for what's to come, too.

Rhaenyra and Leanor shouldn't split, they agreed to be married sire heirs and pursue their own interests that was the deal and Laenor wasn't able to carry through with the heirs part so Rhaenyra opted elsewhere. All though Laenor and Rhaenyra aren't in love in a romantic way they do care for each other as partners in a platonic/familial sense, Laenor does care for Rhaenyra's children as his own vice versa and the real father doesn't have much to do with their family unit outside of "visits" to Rhaenyra. The only issue really with their situation is Rhaenyra not pursuing a man with a similar appearance to Laenor.

Viserys could have arranged a marriage between his brother Daemon and his daughter Rhaenyra and none of these problems would have happened, she would have had children with white hair.

Criston Cole has put everything bad in his world and character on Rhaenyra seducing him. He really wanted to be a legendary honorable Knight. He tried to get back his honor by eloping with her. If it was all for love then it wouldn't be so bad. Could turn his life into a Tristan and Isolde story instead of Galahad, but hopefully with a happy ending. But she didn't love him. He was barely more then a casual hook up. He is very bitter about turning into an oath breaker for that.

the story is about the dance of dragons civil war, the backstory and time jumps are needed the first season covers about 20 yrs or so. just hang in there its worth it. they had to set up relationships between alot of players daemon / viserys daemon / rhaenyra deamon/otto . etc etc. 2 episodes would not cut it

This was a tough one for me. It almost felt you were triggered by Rhaenyra. 😢 I understand that things are more black and white for you than for me. But this is the GoT universe. Every thing is multi layered and not cut and dry. They didn’t do a good enough job, especially when you compare young Alicent to the Alicent we’re meeting here. The actresses do look entirely different. That said, it was a risky move, and they knew they were making a risky move. We are very used to seeing 20 some thing actors playing teenagers, it would have been a safer choice to find a 20 something actress that you could easily believe was 18 years old and then age her up from episode six onward. That said, you get to love the new Actress and you get to see that she still has all of her strength.

Rhaenyra proposed to Laenor an open marriage to be maintained for purely political reasons, and Laenor accepted that proposal. They are carrying out that proposal. Viserys knows very well what's going on, but is maintaining the pretense that Rhaenyra's children were fathered by Laenor because he has always wanted Rhaenyra to be as happy as possible in spite of the weight of her royal duties. Viserys *must* maintain that pretense in order for Rhaenyra's children to be accepted as part of the royal family. That is all.

Rhaenyra needed heirs - like every other ruler, regardless of their geneder. How you expect her to have an heir if husband is unable to have children? Rhaneyra was doomed to have children by lover in momnet she decided she wants continue being Crown Princess. Laenor can't give her a child, so she turned to Harwin. There would be no point for her want crown and be childless - having heir is the most important duty of every King or Queen Regnant. (Look at Alexander the Great - built great, great empire but it all crumbled, as he never chose heir. Maybe he had fertility issue, maybe not, but he still could point to some general or some brother and say: he would be next king. Alexander's first child died in infancy. And his wife was pregnant for the second time at time his death - yet he still didn't clarify wheter he wants his brother or his unborn baby to succeed. Why would they do the time skip? Because it's as adults the story takes place; the first five episodes were essentially just setting the stage (and well, the ensuing five episodes were also more or less just setting the stage, but more immediately so).

They had an agreement, and its not like they didn't try.. If Laenor could get pregnant, I'm sure he would have many times over as well. As for the aging, the characters that didn't get an actor change, did not change as much, because they aren't going through puberty. Alicent's actress is older looking, and so is the character so she didn't need one. There is a significant difference in physical appearance between age like 12-20, where as 20-30, maybe even 35 depending on the person can look in the same age group. The same is to be said of 40-55, and so forth. If they aged her up, it would have looked ridiculous. I also think the older actress looks Rhaenrya's younger one, i mean she's had 3 kids by this point.

The Irony is that he noticed the hair of the kids, which was the issue in the books. In the show the Valeryons are black, that should be a dead giveaway that the kids aren't Laenors. I know I spelled things wrong. I'm spending more time writing this than correcting it. :-)

Rhaenyra has always been committed to doing the exact opposite of any expectations that might be placed on her. She wants the power that comes with being heir to the throne, but she's never had any intention of allowing herself to be bound by any kind of duty or responsibility. Her husband's sexuality is immaterial; she was going to do as she pleased whether he agreed to an open marriage or not, consequences be damned. That's not to pick exclusively on Rhaenyra, though. I have some thoughts about Alicent as well, but I'll save them for a different video.

rheanerya isn't the bad one... allicent is not innocent.. she plotted with her father behind Rheanerya back to get either the king for months... she is now in bed with larys who had rhaenyra fathers of children killed and the hand of the king and did nothing about it afterwards but keep larys in her pocket.. Rheanerya tired to have children with her husband but he couldn't perform cuz he gay... king is the 1 who made them marry.... the king is ok with those children and so is corlys Valerian... Rheanerya ain't the bad 1.

The cast change IMO was a terrible idea. and it was very inconsistent. Didn't ruin the series but it was a bad choice.

there's absolutely no way the younger actresses for rhaenyra or alicent would've been able to pass as the mothers of all the kids in the later episodes.

I have no idea what you're talking about. The actresses are perfectly cast, and look very much like the younger versions of the adults. Sounds like you were just taken aback at how much time had passed (10 years). And as you now know, another 6 years pass between episodes 6 and 7, so that's 16 years after they were teenagers, it would be totally nonsensical to have the same actors for that. It only works for the older characters, since aging at that point is not really much growing but more getting old and grey and wrinkled. The only character which is a bit strange age-wise is Criston, since they didn't do a great job at aging him up, but that has already been joked about in to death in the community; they could at least have given him some grey streaks. Somewhat true for Daemon too, but they did a slightly better job at making him look a bit aged.
