Fun fact. During the shooting of this movie, when they had some time off, the crew went horseback riding and got caught in freezing rain on the way back. The woman that played Buttercup says that when Andre saw her shivering, he rested his hand on top of her head like a hat. She says that it warmed her up and kept the rain off surprisingly well, but on top of that, it made her feel safe, which she really appreciated.

Chris Sarandon is great. Even his reaction when Westley describes “To the Pain” is hilarious.
@bwilliams46311 ай бұрын
Andre was suffering greatly by the time the film was made, but people who were close to him said that he really enjoyed doing it. The filmmakers had to resort to a few tricks with the camera to hide his increasing pain, such as having Andre stand with his feet is parallel trenches when Westley appears to be hanging on his back. Cary Elwes was actually walking behind Andre in those shots.

Here's my popularity theory: It was one of the last movies that predates the culture splintering (meaning USA consumption of media through *relatively* few options). Movies like this got hefty replay on basic cable channels like USA and TNT. As you note, it's a good, enjoyable, campy romp. That made it easy to like and easy to rewatch. And it became a common piece of media in our shared experiences. I think this is one of the things Gen-X has more than any generation before or after it. The boomers had network TV but we had that plus cable. So we have a whole bunch of shows and movies that are cult classics just off widespread rewatch.

Still one of my favorites. So many memorable and memeable moments. Cary Elwes (farmboy) wrote a book, As You Wish, about filming the movie. The audiobook features many of the actors, producers, director of the film; it's great and also a glowing tribute to Andre, who had already passed.

This movie has some of my favorite lines in it. "Ha! Your pig fiancée is too late!" "We are men of action, lies do not become us." "You've been mostly dead all day." I also think its funny how easily the Wesley could have killed both Inigo and Vizzini. Inigo literally hands his weapon over to Wesley while he's telling his story, and Vizzini immediately stops threatening Buttercup with his dagger when he's offered a game of wits to the death. Both of those character beats are oddly informative, with Inigo not really being a killer, and Vizzini not being as smart as he thinks he is. Fezzik, on the other hand, is someone who values fair play and honesty above all, which is reflected in his confrontation with Wesley. Aside from that, it should be noted that the book this was based on doesn't really have a happy ending. Fezzik's horse throws a shoe and he has to walk. Inigo's wounds get worse, and it's implied that he may not survive. Wesley and Buttercup have their kiss, but then have a, "What now?" realization since they've built each other up so much in their minds over the years, and reality can't ever match up to that. Prince Humperdinck recovers and puts together a posse to hunt them down....and that's where the book ends.

I highly recommend you look up behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this film. They are all hilarious. For instance, Wesley in the miracle Max scene is most a dummy because Carey Elwis couldn't stop laughing. Or the night before the scene on the hill, Elwis broke his ankle ATVing with Andre. There was that time Andre let out a 17-second fart on set and stopped production. Or the time the guy in the ROUS costume got pulled over by the police while wearing the costume.

My all time favourite movie. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. But it never fails to make me laugh. It's comfort and nostalgia that covers all the entertainment bases. Even the camp is intentional and perfectly placed. This movie is a pivotal piece that gave birth to many movies throughout the decades. It is still informing many media genres. From memes to mainstream. eg GOT, Mountain vs Viper. GRRM is a huge Princess Bride fan. It is difficult to convey the importance that this movie had on the landscape of entertainment. To someone who is only now being introduced to it. At least not without ruining the experience.

😂 random but Jimmy Columbo is 1 of my favorites as well! I think I'm a few yrs younger than you, but neither of us were actually watching it during it's run unless you caught those later years during the 90's. I still watch it regularly I've gone through it on the Peacock service(it has a lot of classics surprisingly) I'll even turn it to Great American Country in the mornings for their blocks of Columbo and Murder She Wrote episodes just to have playing. Sad we don't get those type of shows anymore I recently while watching an episode thought it'd be great to have an updated Columbo show! Even a spiritual sequel that gets what made the show great would be nice.

For motivation in the movie, Mandy Patinkin imagined that the Six Fingered Man was the cancer that claimed his real father's life. Thus, the truly honest emotion behind the line, "I want my father back, you SOB."
