I am in the process of opening a store to sell my art (just as a hobby, so definitely not a full-time store), and we have been looking at several printers that would print art prints, stickers, etc. The p700 is one of the ones we were looking at, so your review of the p800 was SUPER informative! It's hard to find the cons on this series of printers, so I appreciate the pros and cons- it helps me to know what to expect and to figure out what I can live with and what is a no-go. There are continuous ink systems (CIS for short) that take these countermeasures into consideration. Chip pullers to remove phony protection, dummy cartridges with "always full" reading chips, even dummy chips that can be swapped out with legit ink cartridges to trick them into allowing you to use other pigmented or dye based inks. Quality wise it is up to you to determine if CIS bottles or huge tanks of externally located inks are the way to go for identical output for a fraction of the cost. WIth dummy chips used to replace original chips this comes in handy when you want to refill the Epson branded plastic ink tanks with CIS inks you bought elsewhere.

I am so glad I found this channel and this video! The printer is disco'd now, but do you have any recommendations for a cheaper alternative for someone who is just starting out? I eventually would like to invest in a larger/higher quality at-home printer for my watercolor, but right now I am using my Canon Pixma 3620 and it's not horrible, but I am maybe looking for one tier up without putting too much of a cost investment out just yet. Hi! I really like your videos! I am still a little torn between the Canon P300 and the Epson SC700.... I print wedding invites and it it 90% only black ink. Once in awhile there will be and image/photo. The Epson has a $200 rebate right now so that is tempting and I know you prefer that. But after replacing the ink 2-3 times, the Canon at full price is still cheaper. Most of all though, I really want to print as close to the quality of digital printing as possible. I want super crisp black text.

Hello there! I'm thinking of getting the new P900 and I had a question. When you initially setup the printer after unboxing. Did the printer use most of the ink so you had to get all new cartridges to even begin printing? Or how many prints did you get out of it after set u before you had to buy a new set of inks? It’s been 2 years since we got the P800 so we don’t recall how much ink was left. It was also holiday season when we upgraded our printer so we were printing more than usual. Our inks run out at different rates but we usually buy no more than 2 sets a year and purchase extra LLK cartridge since that one runs out the fastest.

you can replace them individually but buying them in sets may save your money. We change out the most commonly used inks like matte blacks a few times a year, others less, it really depends on how much you print and how much ink fills up each page.

110lb cover weight card stock is the thickest we print with the auto-feeder. even then, sometimes the printer may throw an error because the roller didn't catch the next sheet of paper correctly. That said, in my experience the texture of the paper matters just as much as the weight because some rough or high fiber textured paper makes it harder for paper to glide through. I have had the Epson P800 for over 4 years, and until now, have loved it. Unfortunately, it has started leaving ink blobs (magenta) scattered over the prints - a 3880 problem Epson claimed they had fixed on the P800...

yes. we had the 3880 and had some magenta issues. i tried to fix and killed the print head. that's how we got the p800 :P hopefully you can take the p800 to a repair shop. whenever our printers start acting wonky it really screws us up emotionally for the day as we spend hours trying to fix it. that's why i feel like having a printer is like having a pet or something. they really have their own personalities. hoping to have two printers one day as a back up when the p800 gets old :)

So we have to go on vacation from time to time. When i do i turn of the printer and it kind of seals everything off. When i come back i turn it on, it does am auto clean and im good to go. When we are home we just leave the printer on. We end up printing something every 3 to 5 days with no issues. It is normal to have ink-iety because it is a relatively big investment as a new artist. Were you buying the epson ink for Epson 3880 or used the OEM inks?

I was using oem inks and got them for cheaper prices on ebay. I did not hesitate to use oem expired inks. But there are a ton of third party high volume reusable ink cartridges and third party inks for the 3880. It takes more time and you have to be very careful or else you can damage your printer but you can potentially save a ton of money.

Love that you are thinking a couple steps ahead and have so many questions. We just shot a video about the top 6 art printers for 2020 and we are editing it this weekend. On the list is the EcoTank 7750. Good things: cheaper maintenance and ink costs and good for bulk printing. Not so good things: limited number of colors / color gamut and can be slow. I'm planning to get the P900 when it's back in-stock but have a question. How do you print lots of different photos? Let's say you have File1.jpg, File3.jpg, File12.jpg, File7.jpg and want to print a 5x7 of each then you want to print some 8x10s of the same. Do you have to print them one at a time? Is there software that allows you to select which files and the quantity of each and simply press print once?

Hi Zach: i havent looked up macros or printing photo workflow tools. What we personally end up doing is placing all the photos we need to print on one large 17x22 inch file on photoshop and print it out. We then use a paper trimmer to cut. This is not automated of course but it batches our printing. Lmk if makes sense.

I print a few thousand prints on demand every year from a print shop but will be moving to doing my own printing. Every week get orders for different prints and different sizes of each print. Unfortunately it looks like I might just need to create my own software solution. I may be able to make this work as a web app or automate it in Photoshop.

@@EasySundayClub one way using Photoshop that could be helpful is create 4 photoshop files. Let's call these "TopLeft, TopRight, BottomLeft, BottomRight. Use the "load files in to stack" script. Let's say you have 200 watercolor prints (photos in my case). Each of these four files would have 200 layers (one for each print). Now, on your template for the 17x22 instead of copying and pasting, use "Place Linked Object" instead. So the top left would be linked to the TopLeft.psd file and so on. From now on you never have to position a file into the template, simply toggle on/off which layer/file you want to print in that corner. Want to add a new print? Simply copy it once to each of the four files as a new layer and you're done forever. This would be way easier and faster than what you're currently doing.

I am printing scanned art files (watercolor calligraphy mostly) from Affinity Designer, and I am getting mid-page errors...the page spits out unfinished, and the document remains in the print queue as "printing." If this isn't your realm, do you know anyone I might turn to? Thank you so much!

that’s a bummer when it happens. In my experience it’s either user error (I closed my laptop while it’s still printing, wifi is glitchy if I was using wireless printing), or software issue if it happens often, in which case I tried to restart computer, reinstall icc profile etc. Try searching this issue in Google if you haven’t yet, and search if other people are encountering it with Affinity Designer specifically, and you might find other possible solutions.

Yes happened in past. Usually paper load error or ink low error. I would try another photo editing program like canva or photoshop to see if same issue. If not, then prob issue with affinity. If same issue, then problem with printer. Would re install drivers as well. If still doesnt work then google issue and will have to start sifting through printer forums where the hardcore printer nerds live. G luck.

In case one of your followers reads this and has input: I tried from both Affinity and Adobe and had the same problem, and I tried different feeding paths on the printing with the same problem. I've updated the printer drivers and cleared out the spooling folder and I've replaced the USB cord and done all the restarting options. I will top off my inks and look into paper loading (that does seem to be a bit finicky) AND I'm in touch with both the Affinity Revolution team and The Printer Man Himself, Jose Rodriguez. More Googling, more trying options, more hoping this printer can be my friend again.

Hi -- after weeks of watching youtube videos from epson print university and crying, I was so excited to find fellow watercolorists who use this printer. It was such a big investment, but since Covid, my former printer went out of business:( I have been terrified to use it and until 5 minutes ago, began to think it was only for photographs... Really struggling with all the technical aspects. I also like to print on watercolor paper, (not Epson- usually Arches or Fabriano) but it seems that Epson strongly recommends using their fine art paper. Not certain if that is to sell their paper, or if it is actually different. My originals are usually on 300 lb paper, but prints are on 140 lb, although it sounds like this would still require using the manual feed in the front? It also looks like printing on black or colored paper may not be possible, and would instead require using a HUGE amount of ink to cover the surface. Is that the case? I also found it interesting that they recommend you turn the printer off when not in use, as I had no idea about the ink dump until your video. Good grief! And when I switched to Mac, I gave up my Photoshop, but seems like I need it again for color calibration and sizing. There just really are no tutorials for painters on printing artwork...I don't want to CHANGE the colors - I want them to match! I am looking forward to watching more of your videos, and I'll find you on facebook and instagram as well. Beautiful and delicate paintings, and so smart to print your business cards in the margin so nothing is wasted:)

Dude you are on another planet... We have been using high grade 3rd party ink in our processes for over 4 years. To go back to Epson inks will can be compared to business suiside - you are paying way toooooooooo much.... I spend £200 for a year and that is printing on a 1.6m printer...

For photos yes. Good printer for amateur photog. U can try for art. Price is cheap. Cons: small ink cartridge, black and white can be better and its an older printer.

I found a Canon pixma 100s on eBay for 50$, All new.. but it wont print from group 2/chamber 2, which means that it cant print Black tones. Should i get it or buy the epson w1500 for 60$? By the Way it’s second hand printers

@@xDidYouKnow yooooo. that sounds amazing. pixma 100! 8 inks vs 6 in the epson. you might be able to get the canon repaired especially since the printhead is replaceable. the important thing is that you are thinking outside the box. tons of used printers outside that are probably good for your use case. difficult time right now for printers because alot of printers are on back order due to supply chain issues with covid. g luck!

You can’t just get any 3rd party inks. Our ink actually has our printer name on it. It has been tested exclusively for that printer. I would even say it’s better than the Epson inks.

 I was wondering if any one of you know the Ink consumption when changing blacks 🤔. any official numbers or real world experience of the consumption of ink when changing from Matte black to photo black and vice versa would be appreciated 🙏 I obviously try to plan my printing on matte material versus gloss /semi gloss, however, I now and then find myself inspired to do a print on different material than the activated black ink, but hold back due to fear of extensive ink consumption💸 Best regards Lars Møller

Hi, I really appreciated your video and sharing so much information. I actually have this printer for my art print, and I've struggled with the color print as the result is quite different from my original painting. I've tried many adjustments and still couldn't get it right. The reason I gave 4 stars for tech support (which I don't think this would classify as tech support) is because once you turn the printer on, it does require a little bit of start up time which may bother some who are in a hurry to quickly print something. To offset that though the printer prints very quickly. I would definitely purchase this printer again.

Did you buy or were you sent this computer by Epson? I have read terrible reviews of this printer on Amazon so it has put me off and cannot find much reviews elsewhere. For such an expensive printer I would expect an overall better reviews. I am just starting out so will invest in a cheaper printer until I can actually see my business is profitable. The cost of ink for this printer also puts me off.

Ha we wish it was a gift but we purchased it after our previous printer which is the predecessor of the P800 reached the end of its life. We have another video on recommended printers for artists at different price ranges (also not sponsored). P800 is the only printer we own and love for our business but we understand it may not be a universal experience for everyone so doing research from multiple sources is wise.

Why did you chose an Epson over a Canon?

My first hand me down printer when I started the art business was an Epson and we were happy/stayed with it. Canon has great printers too.

Idk, that particular model comes out to like $6 a print just in ink.. extraordinarily expensive for cost effectiveness. There are other printers that print at 5 cents a print and have 90% of the quality that this model does. Cartridges are just not worth the price.
