League instructor John Varriano discusses Frank Dumond's prismatic palette, a powerful tool in any painter's arsenal. The philosophical technique and practice centered on this palette was developed over many years and passed down from painter to painter. Thank you for this video! I've been researching and trying to understand the Prismatic Palette, but other explanations left me wondering more. Now I finally get it, and I learned a lot about seeing and understanding the landscape as well..

Great verbal and visual presentation. I am left with a greater appreciation of the prismatic palette.

Interesting how large flat tonal premixed pallets were chopped up and fit into a lid

How is this different than an artist laying out strings of color? Are these specific hues?

Anyone making these palettes for sale?

I don’t buy it. The prismatic palette seems more like a selling point for paint than a painters point for artistry. A competent painter can work with same palette with a minimum selection of paints just as well. Save your money and learn color theory and understand how to mix colors rather than rely on an expensive and space taking collection of tubes and palette.

Sure. All those students and the thousands of painters who have used this were, are fools. Good thing you came along.

@@thomcarr7021 There are plenty of people to sell snake oil and there are plenty of people who will buy it. You choose.

@@daviller74 It's just a palettte. It's not a system or method. And it looks like a healthy palette to me.

My mentor here in Japan told me to start with 3 colours, cadmium red, cadmium yellow and colbalt blue. I followed that advice and it gave me a really solid foundation in colour theory, (and it didnt break the bank) so I agree with you, and now I am supper excited about expanding my knowlage and developing as there is much more to learn. This pallete appears to be made of custom mixes so I would love to know what paints were used as its foundation. It would be nice if the authour would have included a list of pigments for us to see. perhaps they could add it to the coments.

Not a fan of this palette at all.. i have had to undo this teaching with several of my students who came to my landscape atelier program wanting to carry this over. This is just not how natural color works. Its too formulaic, all the paintngs i have seen from artists who use this approach lack harmony and are garish in color . In general you want to learn to mix intuitively based on color temperature not overthinking and trying to have a laid out formula for hue. If the students are making massive value mistakes thats a drawing and fundamentals issue that should have been corrected long long long before they get to learning about color.
