The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered Was it deemed demonetized by the algorithms or by manual review?
@TheHistoryGuyChannel6 жыл бұрын
Eamonn Prunty I did the appeal, and the demonetization was upheld without explanation. And, we have found, even when the manual review finds the video appropriate, that decision can be reversed, or the video can be deemed “age-restricted,” which also prevents monetization. It is a small percentage on my channel. But when I put effort into content, I never know if YT might randomly prevent me earning income. I can say, by what has been restricted on my channel, that the standards are so inconsistent as to seem either random or capricious.

If you are forced to remove content from a video in order to keep it monetized -- that is censorship. And it is the most insidious form of censorship, because it engenders the idea that you can say whatever you like, as long as you don't get paid for it. To understand this, apply the same argument to Amazon: You publish a book via Createspace, and load it into Amazon. Amazon says that they will not allow the book to be sold with "X" content. If you remove "X" content in order to sell your product, you have been censored. Now, if that were to happen at Amazon, and "X" content were not something patently illegal, Amazon would be paying heavy fines for forcing that censorship on you....KZbin gets a pass, because Google has very deep pockets to pay lawyers.
@TheMajorActual6 жыл бұрын
@@benderrodriguez142 That's why it is the most insidious form of censorship: It perpetuates the myth that you can speak your mind...or refuse to bake a cake -- and yes, the bake shop ultimately won, but it was a Pyrrhic Victory. It also gives people a shield to hide behind, so that they don't have to deal with reality. "Copyright infringement" is one thing. Censoring history is another thing, entirely.

Cowra is the home of Australia's World Peace Bell. The Australian World Peace Bell is a replica of the one that stands in the forecourt of the United Nations Headquarters in New York as a reminder of the continual need for all nations to work for peace. The Australian World Peace Bell was awarded to Cowra in 1992 for its long standing contribution to world peace and international understanding. Hear, hear! Of all the nonsense on KZbin, i find it very annoying some of my favorite youtubers get demonetised, for what i consider to be exellent, informative content. Science and History. Censorship of these topics, this is a bad road. Misinformation, hate, blatant lies, sure, banhammer that. But scientists n historians, if their data checks out, this is what we need from KZbin. Not lifehacks n propaganda. The message from all of your videos is 'this is a thing that happened, maybe like this, or perhaps that, but this we know'. One of the last channels i would have thought to worry about demonetiseation. N now you will have to self censor. Which is a problem. Thank you for your video. My father died last year in June just short of his 95th Birthday. It was thought that he may have been the last surviving Australian guard from Cowra. On the night of the 1944 breakout, he woke in the early hours of the morning, saw a fire and blew his bugle to wake his area of the Australian camp. I have met some of the Japanese ex-POWs who sometimes visited my father and others who made the long journey to attend the annual remembrance, each August. On the edge of the old POW camp there now stands a reconstructed guard tower with a recording of my father, sharing memories of that night.

I assume google demonetises videos that they think advertisers would not want their product associated with because of the subject matter. No doubt they have had many complaints by advertisers over the years about their product being advertised in the middle of a video that they found inappropriate to be associated with their product. So if Google cannot make money from the video there is no reason to pay the provider of the video any money for views. It is just business in cases like this, not censorship, as the video is still shown.

I hope this is the case and not a sensitivity to subject content. We all know history is written by the victors and that *any* retelling contains perspective from the retelling and their sources, but a specific explanation should be required if demonetization for subject content is the issue. The EU "right to be forgotten" laws, China's expunging of historical events, and certain news publications' demands for search result inclusion payments, harm the advancement of civilization by cloaking the past and thereby leaving us blind to our future.

When the Japanese lost, they happily returned to their bunks. Really though, I see nothing wrong with the explanation of the details of this event. It isn't a pleasant event, but war isn't full of pleasant events; and a suicidal attack by the Japanese is not going to be a happy and joyful event. I just read your mini essay in the video description. It was of course as articulate and poigniant as could be expected of any content creator, particularly one with such fantastic skill and elegance in the craft of Storytelling as yourself. For my part I do not in any way beleive that any video you've made should be censored or demonetised. Quite the contrary, KZbin should be pushing your content to the top of recommendations. Both for the benefit to society as a whole, and to their own benefit as an organisation; to show themselves to wholly support a channel so dedicated and wholesome as yours. I am truly ecstatic to see that your channel has recently grown from humble beginnings to a quarter million subscribers, and hope that you continue to grow into the many millions. It's both what you deserve, and what I beleive our society needs. I have never before supported anyone on Patreon, as I pay for KZbin premium under the assumption that creators such as yourself get a fair kick-back (also I'm just pretty cheap and don't want to build up too many sources of cash-outflow), however I've never seen a better example than yourself of a creator for who I would consider making direct patronage to. Please keep myself (and the community) updated as to how KZbin's monetization policies are reimbursing you (particularly I'd be interested to find out, if you know, how much relative money from KZbin premium ends up in your pocket). Should you need direct support to continue making content, or even should you need to move to another platform (something I am beginning to hear serious implications of from several talented creators), I would gladly support you and indeed follow you to a new platform if KZbin is no longer giving you the support that you need and deserve. Thank you so much for all the hard work and fantastic content, I wish you all the success and compensation that you clearly deserve, and look forward to more top-notch and highly important content in the future!

"I do not believe that it is in the interest of KZbin, its creators, advertisers or viewers, to block the presentation of history because history is often shocking in its very nature. Remembering history is important, and plays a vital role in society. It should not be censored. Sensibilities should not move in society such that we cannot remember the past simply because the past has often been difficult. If we neglect to learn these lessons, the future will be made much more difficult. " As a history and language teacher and explorer of cultures, your statement above screams the truth. I find this a very insightful and intriguing video. I lived in southern Japan, in 佐賀県, or Saga Prefecture, from 1996-2001. During that time I worked in Japanese public high schools, and became very much involved with learning the language, local culture and history. I was shocked to discover how little I knew of the war from the Japanese perspective, such as the uprising in Kurume City (久留米市) which refused to surrender and was surrounded by the US military; a massacre was avoided at the last minute when the leadership of the city decided to capitulate. Sparsely populated and rural Saga, I was told, had the highest per capita number of volunteers for the kamikaze program. Reading the death poem of a kamikaze seventeen year old pilot uncle, opened and read by the family for the first time in honor of my visit, had us all in tears; he didn't want to go, he saw the futility of the effort, but he went so that his family wouldn't be dishonored. A very straight and unusually wide downtown street on the southern plain that I could see from the heights of my favorite hiking mountain, Mt. Tenzan (天山), turned out to have once been a kamikaze training airstrip. Talking to Japanese veterans of the war, hearing how 50+ years later they were still haunted, traumatized by the events they had either willingly or been drafted to participate in - from cannibalism of their comrades and prisoners to not being allowed to surrender - was sobering, bone chilling. Talking to a woman who that morning of August 9th had been a high school girl practicing with her classmates to fend off American invaders with bamboo spears, in the wide open shipyard grounds instead of at their cramped schoolyard, on the intended ground zero. Watching the tears well in her eyes when she spoke of her father, a roofer who'd gone to northern Nagasaki City to give and estimate in the area that turned out to be the actual ground zero, was heart wrenching. By its very nature, war is offensive, it's disgusting. It's the epitome of the worst of human nature. Videos like this are essential for us remembering what happens, and knowing how to avoid repeating the same horrible lessons, lest we forget.

An excellent presentation as usual. I am baffled by the demonetization issue. Perhaps KZbin is coming to the end of its utility for honest social interchange. For the record there is a very good tourist centre at Cowra. It includes a theaterette with a holographic presentation about the break out. Technically, it's one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen and the story is handled with great sensitivity. One aspect concerning the Italian prisoners is that many were allowed out of the camp during the day, helping on local farms and businesses, with (apparently) some having affairs with local women. Bill Bryson in his book on Australia visited the centre and was equally impressed. If you are looking for some other stories, the Japanese invasion at Khota Baru in Malaysia is interesting. It started just after midnight on the Dec 8th 1941, while Japanese planes were still approaching Pearl Harbour (where it was still Dec 7th). The area was defended by Indian Army troops and Australian Air Force Hudson bombers. The latter immedietaly attacked the Japanese ships, sinking one, setting two on fire and inflicting several hundred casualties, at the same time as American warships were being sunk in Hawaii.

Keep up the good work! I hope that this version is up to their nebulous standards. It is quality content -creators like you that restore a little of my hope in KZbin. Quality historical content for all is a sure cure for cultural amnesia.

I use to live like half a K from the prison sight back in the 80s and would go for walks there a lot before it all got fenced off. Had to do a model and paper about the camp. For some reason I forgot to do the model and was told I would get very low to no marks for messing up. I was given extra time to build one, but told for each day I was late, I would lose one point (20 was top score) My parents let me stay home the next day and I worked my butt off. I went to the site with my mum and drew the camp in accurate 2D detail. Found some old chip wood board as the base, got some nails and fishing line to simulate the fence. Bought some play dough, made each hut and quarters to the right shape with roofs, glued them in the right spot to match my sketch, and was so embarrassed how cheap it looked with like 5 different coloured dough, I got an old white spray can and painted the huts. Most turned white, but the red ones turned pink and blue sky colour and stuck out like a sore thumb no matter how much paint I put. Sprinkled some sand on the wet paint to simulate the ground, did it all in one day with my parents disappointed in me for not doing it sooner when I was supposed to. It was about 24 x 24 inches, I walked it to school the next morning from my house. Saw my history teacher as I walked through the car lot, said "I am so sorry, this is as good as I could do it in one day." His eyes lit up, he was so happy with it, later in class we had like 15 or so models on display, some were super expensive and painted nicely, but mine was the only one to equal scaling and positioning of each hut and fence and grounds, which I was surprised. I got called up and praised by my teacher in front of the class and got the full 20 points. I was asked a week later by the Cowra exhibition committee if my model could be donated for display for a while at the committee museum, I was still so embarrassed by the pink huts I almost said no, but there it stayed for a while (a year I think or a few months). Looking back, I wish I took more pride in my accomplishment. I didn't even know I hit a home run.

I cannot comprehend demonitizing The History Guy's posts. Clear & concise depiction of historical facts with good visuals perfect for the KZbin format deserve the sponsorship that traditionally reward the hard work of The History Guy, hard work tastefully presented! I have never seen any inappropriate content on this channel. The History Guy comes from a politically neutral p.o.v. that cannot cause conflict by the Right nor Left. He simply stands with the facts. Let him get paid for his honest efforts! #sponsorthetruth #knowhistory

History is not always happy and pretty, but it needs to be told. Thank you for your videos. I have watched many and have NEVER seen anything that was objectionable or deserving of demonetization! Anyone that finds your videos shocking or objectionable should never watch the news, read a book, play video games or even venture outside their homes! Keep up the good work!

It frustrates me in this PC environment we live in that there is a feeling that we need to "sanitize" history. Much of human history is shockingly brutal and disgusting, but when we "white wash" that truth and try to ignore or forget that brutality, we run the risk of repeating it. Tell it as it happened History Guy to the best of your ability and that of the KZbin sensors. You are telling history, that deserves to be remembered! Great channel, it is my favorite!

I'm watching your videos on repeat the rest of the day in protest (even though I've seen all of them). Your videos are always informational in nature and your passion for history shines through. Your intention is never to shock and its ludicrous that KZbin would claim so. Keep up the great channel!

History or current events appear to be what the platform wants people to have, not what really is true. Too many times on platforms like KZbin, Facebook, Google + and others censor, abridge or "edit" content because of their political slant, not allowing differences of opinions or anything they deem "offensive". Keep up the good work, I really appreciate your content!

Now, more than ever, history needs to be presented in a clear and unbiased way. Nothing in this or the original version is sensationalised, or presented for shock value. I understand youTube has to draw a line, but it should be as far away from history videos as possible.

I love your channel, you have a fantastic way of explaining history and context of the events. I watched this exact video a week ago and thought it was great. There was nothing even close to being offensive, so I have no idea what would be considered advertiser unfriendly. Anyhow, keep up the awesome work!

Thank you for re-posting! I for one have greatly appreciated your presentations of 'history that deserves to be remembered' and I have learned a thing or two myself along the way! While I am not surprised that KZbin would arbitrarily demonetize a video and then refuse to provide a clear explanation (because they probably don't have one) it does bother me that this has been done to one of the least offensive channels I've ever encountered. EVERYTHING I have seen on this channel has been appropriate and presented in context. Even potentially shocking material isn't really shocking, I cannot recall ever seeing anything that rises to what they put on so-called "family friendly" TV shows these days. So keep it up and we'll keep hammering KZbin and maybe they'll finally admit that they just do this arbitrarily on occasion because they have a quote to fill or something. :-) And maybe they'll be the subject of a HistoryGuy video one day! LOL
