Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual teacher and best-selling author. He is a German-born resident of Canada best known as the author of The Power of Now and A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose. In 2008, The New York Times called Tolle, "the most popular spiritual author in the United States." In 2011, he was listed by Watkins Review as the most spiritually influential person in the world. Tolle does not identify with any specific religion, but he has been influenced by a wide range of spiritual works.
This audio comes from Eckhart Tolle's podcast with Russell Brand.

“The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not “the thinker.” The moment you start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a tiny aspect of that intelligence. You also realize that all the things that truly matter - beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace - arise from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken.” - Eckhart Tolle. Probably my favorite quote of all time. If you enjoyed this video and want to help create more, please consider supporting After Skool on Patreon. Thank you! www.patreon.com/AfterSkool

The ego is FAKE superiority. Thats super important. I think it’s more that you judge others and yourself and fall into false patterns of thinking-I always say that you should not make others into you, nor you into others. That’s ego in a nutshell. Posessions can define you authentically too-it’s the inauthentic that’s harmful because it gets in the way of the real you. Your real worth and soul. Anyway this was stimulating and I loved this so much! We just need to be clear. The definition of “superior” completely changes when you get beyond ego. It doesn’t cease to exist. Some people are better at some things than others, for example. Are you superior for you, or for others? That’s a very important question to figure out. Also, why is a bee hive so amazingly beautiful and intelligent? 🤷‍♀️👍🏻👁️❤️‍🔥

Once you realise that you are not your own worst enemy the next step is the realisation that you are actually your own best friend, acceptance is key, then you are free, you are no longer Ill as ego is no longer the driving force in your life, however, it remains dormant, ready to rare its ugly head once again, its up to the aware self to indentify with the thoughts that make us slip into the void and go nope not this time buddy, your ego is slayed. Why is this stuff not legal and thereafter promoted? A, I think its because the Ego is in control, well, it thinks its in control but it will never truly be able to claim itself, resistence is always there. We are truly witnessing heaven and hell on earth, its not a place you go to, its a place you are already living, its up to you not me 👌

I used to be one of those people. My parents basically gave me everything growing up to make up for all the abuse. So I equated material things with love and happiness. And so as I grew up, I still had that engrained into my mind and lived that type of life. Until it hit me one day and I’ve been on a better path of self healing and reprogramming myself. To me, identifying ones happiness with material objects just shows that there’s a real void that can’t seem to be filled and I can’t help but have empathy for those people.

Perhaps some of them are only sharing their activities with others, as we are social animals, I find it normal to use social media to express ourselves, say what is on our minds, this can be expressed through photographs... and yes sometimes you want to show a personality, but it's more like a dialogue for me, it's not a way to say "I'm better than the others". Is it bad anyway if you want to create yourself ? It's not necessarily about superiority... I like to see everyone creating themselves. I like to see people creating beauty, expressing beauty. Just my opinion, I would be glad to know your opinion on this ! :)

I have found since my happiness and empathy has increased significantly. I have quit nearly all social media and are trying to focus on bettering myself through helping others. I just wanted to say it has really helped me a lot. I feel so much more at peace and connected to the universe now. I've been doing similar work, but if I could make a suggestion: Don't think in terms of controlling your thoughts. As Eckhart might say, see them, recognize them for what they are, then let go of them. Give no resistance, but accept them and surrender to whatever the present moment has to offer. Trying to stop or control your thoughts is only waging war with your ego, and ironically the ego feeds off that energy. You may later find that you suppressed your ego rather than dissolved it, and it comes back around with a vengeance. When you accept what comes to you, recognize your thoughts but do not allow them to form your identity, then you can be truly free. I strongly recommend Eckhart's book The Power of Now, particularly the audiobook version which is read by him.

I had an horrible egodeath experience on Acid when I was so dump to smoke weed on the peak. It was shocking but somehow I needed to get it - because I was very depressed at that time and thought a lot about suicide. A lot of really weird shit happenend on it but in the end I‘ve got the message. I was with my 3 friends and suddenly it kicked in and I traveled through the universe in light speed. I came to a place where my „real friends“ (some alienlike persons but with the same character as my friends on earth) were talking to me that „I‘ve now finally understood what life really is. Finally! Also him woke up.“ They looked at me as if I‘ve been the only fool that didn’t get it the whole time: That everything down here is just a funny little game but „real life“ is somewhere outside of that. And therefore you can create everything here and everything you can imagine is possible here. After that I couldn’t control myself anymore and every 5min I was falling unconscious to travel through the space again. And it didn’t feel good. Later on when they brought me to bed I felt like I’m now trapped in a time loop because nothing changed anymore for hours that felt like days. I was feeling a lot of pain from all that struggle and the believe that this loop might go for ever on and I‘ve really fucked up. The pain was increasing from loop to loop and finally I got the message that the only way to get rid of *the pain* is to „let it go“. I was fighting with that idea because letting „it“ go meant the rest of life that was still in me. Finally after hours of pain I did it because there was no other way out of it. So i let it go and I felt like „Ok that’s it. I‘m dead. Doesn’t feel that bad, but it’s also sad that I didn’t lived my more on earth. But anyways I‘m already really excited in which body I will be reborn now. I hope it’s not a bad one!“ Long Story short: I woke up in my own body again. In the real world. First I was shocked because I really believed that it was finally over. After that I felt so happy to be back again in my body and in my life. I appreciate the gifts that I got for living my life now way more than before. In the end that was one lesson of many to cure my depression.

I had lots my contact with reality but just right now I've recaptured it again thanks to this video . Thanks God. Not because im crazy but I'm philosopher too And while listening started thinking what had happened to my life Why I used to be was so happy and why not anymore.... Before I was in touch with reality suddenly I don't know where I decided not to keep on Bearing it in mind because it disappointed me and I turned to hated it up not yo need it anymore and didn't realize that had happened to me. Until now I didn't think there would be a philosopher like this man he's a gifted .

I feel music taste can also be compared to having an ego. For example you discover this awesome unknown band and you love their music and it is yours to recommend and play to others until it becomes mainstream and everyone plays it now to the extent that you even start disliking the music and you find new music. I mean a lot of people pretend not to like another's music "taste" and this is also due to ego I would say.

I was thinking the same thing. But what about a commercial that makes you believe that you aren't cool because you don't own the last common phone or shoes? Conformism on some level can be dangerous.

I think part of the identity process hinges on the dichotomy of our reality. As in the scenario with everyone having the same Rolls Royce, you need something contrary to what you are currently experiencing as "self" to compare it to. It is the key to experience. Every coin has two sides. If there is an "up" there must be a "down". They define each other just like "left and right", "hot and cold", "light and dark" and anything else we could possibly experience. So the ego is always forced to choose what our experience means to us. It is easy to get lost in our experiences as if we have no control but when we step back and "think about the thinker" and remain aware of the process that is taking place, we can gain great understanding and eliminate much of the suffering in our lives.

Everyone has limitless potential. Everyone is priceless. The ego only sees this in himself. To let go, remember everyone has the same value, they just might not have recognised it. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated, however if you are mistreated or taken advantage of, remember your ego. It exists for a reason, and that is to keep you alive. Malevolence lurks, but without it, benevolence would not.

Absolutely fantastic video. Best one from the channel but I think the title doesn’t do the video justice. Rather than focusing on a negative “narcissist” title, believe it would be better served with “How to end suffering” or the like. Just my ego kicking in there 😃 - but great work guys. Thank you.

My ex is very egocentric and as I watch him get older he is desperately holding on to his looks by sexing lots of women. He is empty inside and that makes me sad for him but happy I left the relationship because now he has to skip around with no meaningful relationships. I like watching his hair get thinner and his posture is turning him into an old man perhaps soon he will awaken ♥️

I always felt that the 2nd commandment of the 10 commandments is a reference to this same notion. Creating a craven image of anything in the sky, the earth or sea, or in other words, creating a false image of any idea or false sense of self. Sometimes, even ideologies are a reflection of our egos. This is especially true within political discourses. Even the sports teams we root for. And I think this is essentially the root of tribalism. We are attached with any sense of identity that we feel kinship with. It harbors a false sense of security and blurs our real sense of spiritual identity. As Tolle describes it here, the real self, or the deepest realm of consciousness, is the real image. It's who we really are. And neglecting our sense of self mutates into horrible versions of ourselves, as history teaches us.

I needed to hear this, even though I already live it. I suppose it's a reminder to me, and also part of my ongoing 'training program' to be the best I can be. Like my son did. He lived powerfully and beautifully, He was in the Marines. And he was also an great drummer, we played together. He suddenly passed away 4 months ago in a road accident... I will never be the same again... What is this Life? Who and what are We?... no point asking what, or why... it simply Is. And will always Be. (I surprise myself, sometimes, with my writings. Ha! ;) Well, least I can hope is that someone will read this. But I guess that's just my ego... Oh well... I love the way Eckhart speaks, so kindly humorous and empathic. And wise, very wise. Bless

Losing a child must be one of the worst possible experiences in life. Losing a parent is hard enough, but it’s an expected part of the normal cycle of life. Losing a child however, disrupts everything. Thank you for sharing your experience with others. We are all one. We come from everything and we all go back to it sooner than we could plan for.

Because the purpose of school is to keep us from the truth. Feeding the ego en prepare us for mindless work as a slave. Did you know that children of native americans where taken away from there parrents to "educate" them...giving them an ego..brainwashing the young children so the treath of the spiritual souls was taken away. Same thing.
