The late star’s daughter takes a poignant last look at her favourite pieces from the Private Collection of Joan Rivers.
‘One of my mother’s dreams,’ smiles Melissa Rivers, ‘was to be left alone in a Christie’s warehouse with a satchel and nobody supervising her.’ As the only child of celebrated comedian, writer and television host Joan Rivers, Melissa admits she had ‘very, very difficult decisions to make’ when it came to parting with pieces that hold so many cherished memories.

We must always question any procedure that a doctor recommends. Always know what the risk is. Always know everything about anybody that touches you in a medical office: where they went to school, have there ever been any complaints, filed against them, etc. etc. people people do your research. Much of so-called modern medicine is very dangerous and the patient’s well-being comes last.

I think I read that Joan told Melissa to keep what she wanted and then sell the rest, which is what she is doing. I miss Joan. I miss Fashion Police with Joan. She was so sharp. She death was avoidable. Okay she was in her 80’s but she was sharp, still working hard, independent and feisty. She had fabulous taste. I saw a photo of her Thanksgiving table. Melissa was right. It was heavily laden with beautiful china and glassware and flowers. A gracious hostess of a bygone era.

When Joan Rivers was demonstrating her jewelry on television her voice sounded like my mother's voice. My mother was from England but her voice was the same. I had watched Joan Rivers when she had an afternoon show and I particularly loved her jewelry back then. What a terrible blow when I clicked on the computer one morning and there was the news. She was gone. It was so ridiculous. I had just bought a CD and watched her show and she was so vital and strong and giving away plants to the audience as only she would. I really do miss her because she would have been with us for a very long time. Gone too soon. Too soon.

Yes, particularly if one needs the money. Please. In a strong field, self deception is one of the ugliest human traits. I lost my wife about a year ago and I just had her extravagant jewelry collection appraised. If money were no object, I would keep everything. Of course it "should be enjoyed." I'm a masculine man and keeping it, for me, would be like vicariously visiting my wonderful wife in some small way every time I opened the jewelry boxes. I will keep some, including a couple of the most valuable pieces. However, being in my fifties and not being "set for life," I simply can't justify the luxury of keeping everything. What a better life it would be if we were all capable of just being honest.

Joan Rivers had Exquisite taste. Also that apartment is the location of Joan River's story on Celebrity Ghost Stories... it was a truly fascinating episode... some of it was really frightening. Joan bought that apartment which I think was originally was the ballroom.. or part of the ballroom when she was broke. By broke she may have meant when she was down to her last few million ... she was able to turn that situation around and make sure that the last few decades of her life were lived gloriously . I would have loved to have been able to buy something of hers at auction

Aloha, I loved your mom. I grew up watching her living her very large life. Thank you for sharing her things. I'm sorry she's gone, Melissa. My mom is gone also, they leave a very large space. I love to see her apt pictures. So tasteful, I could feel her. So nice. Thank you.

Why is this stuff being sold? Melissa mentioned "This piece I wish I could have kept".. Melissa and her son were left EVERYTHING Joan owned! So why does she have to sell it?

Many pieces were priceless. The insurance alone would be tremendous. Plus security.

Joan would be so proud of her daughter, she has matured into an elegant, smart lady. Imagine having the late, great Vincent Price and Coral Browne as your Godparents - how fabulous and camp! I confess I'm a little baffled as to why Melissa would sell such personal keepsakes as framed photos. It's not like she needs the money!
