Gator on the other hand was an extremely thin skinned weirdo who literally murdered a woman because his girlfriend dumped him and he couldnt handle being rejected. He was riding with extreme emotional baggage from a damaged childhood and money and fame and ego were too much for him to handle. @@Nuttyirishman85Hosoi didn't do anything morally wrong. So, he snuggled drugs for the black market; people are always going to use drugs, and the black market will always exist when a free market is negated by big government run amok. The government simply outlaws unavoidably ubiquitous human nature to exploit the inevitable black market crime that inevitably rises to the occasion. It's anti-capitalist in the extreme, yet right-wing morons who support big government claim to be capitalist. They're commies just like the Democrats.

There actually have been convicted serial killers released. Not because of law enforcement mistakes or anything, but because the courts have given them sentencing terms that allowed for their release. This is moreso true in cases with several killers, where one cooperates more with police than the others.

skateboarding as a "trend" wasnt all of skateboarding.. street skating scene was born from inner city kids that didnt have pools or half-pipes - it basically evolved independently. the real issue is that vert skating kinda went off the radar as guys like gator didnt or couldnt evolve quick enough as the market and brands shifted attention to smaller decks, smaller wheels, and started showcasing guys skating terrain that most kids had access to. vert skating kinda died out but regained attention once the kids grew up and started organizing in the cities to get skateparks built. interestingly enough, the original skate sponsors are nowhere to be found.. wtf does monster and red bull have anything to do with skating? they dont make products. it's all commercialized now.

I have a different take. Regardless of whether or not he should be granted parole, I believe it is wrong to be granted parole and then have the decision reversed. Maybe the decision was wrong, but an entire board of people whose job it is decided he should get parole. Even if they were somehow wrong, why do they even exist when their decision doesn't matter and the governor can reverse it all anyway? I'm not some weird Gator stan. Gator can rot in hell for all I care, but the justice system is fucked when they tell a person that has served whatever sentence society and/or criminal justice has deemed appropriate, "we're letting you out, oh wait, just kidding, the governor says no." That's not justice, that's fucked up.

Most skaters from that era ignore his existence. Which is hard to do, considering he was a central figure; people talk about Hawk and Hosoi, but there was also that black spot right up there with them. He was a jock asshole, and skateboarding- at least in the 90's up until my generation of the early 00's- rejected all jockism. Street skaters could care less about some 80's jock, especially some rapist murderer 80's jock. Jeff Grosso (RIP) did a great job avoiding talking about Mark Rogowski; he did mention him at least once for historical purposes in his "Love Letters to Skateboarding Series", but amended that mention with, "but Gator sucks", which is pretty much the general consensus. There's a few fried idiots who support MG, but they're kooks, and they suck. Also, I didn't mean to suggest all those 80's vert skaters were jocks. Tony Hawk was a nerd, the farthest thing from a jock, and Hosoi was a sexy artist of the sky. 80's vert was a freakshow, and I love that about it. Unfortunately, there was also that jock black spot.

Ask yourself this: Do you support the Constitution of the United States of America? When people are convicted they are given determinant or indeterminant prison terms. If they have an indeterminant term, the low end (in his case, 31 years) is only for those who have exemplary behavior in prison. The crime they are convicted of has a bearing on sentencing. In a situation where the Constitution is respected, his behavior in prison would decide whether he serves the low end of the indeterminant term or something longer; up to his entire life. To use the crime he has been convicted of (rather than his behavior in prison and efforts toward rehabilitation) to justify spending longer in prison than the low end of the determinant sentence is unconstitutional. But it happens in almost 100 percent of the cases in California because the California Prison System has no interest whatsoever in observing the rights of prisoners. To people with an emotional investment in seeing him serve more time than is constitutionally correct, don't worry. The California Prison system has you covered. Almost nobody gets out when they legally should. Again ask yourself: Constitution? or Feelings? What's more important to you? I'm not here to dictate people's decisions. Just to shine a light on what's really going on.

I was a skater, but he came up after I was out of it. Once you get out of high school shit gets real - But, I followed it loosely, of course everyone who claimed to be a skater knew his name, and some his reputation as a big richard but so were a lot of people then so that doesn't influence me one way or another. Even assholes can be loving to a dog or a cat and that's good, I don't have to live with em so dgaf. I went to school with a dude, that after HS, his GF broke up with him, he shot her and her new BF - dbl life~ never getting out - and he shouldn't, Dude was a nutcase. Gator here? Well, I'm sorry, but that was someone's daughter, sister, aunt niece - and if you were one of them, what would you think? I don't care who you are, what you've done outside of the fact you're a cold blooded murderer. If it were my choice, we wouldn't even be having this discussion because he'd be in a cemetery with a nice marble plaque, maybe some skating photo etched into it. No man, it wasnt an accident, he knew what he was doing but his rage was too powerful for reasonable thought. that's a chemistry/electrical thing going on with broken machines. Would he do it again? probably not but ask yourself if you want him living next door?

I remember Gator as a young upcoming skater who used to ride the vision skate label boards and accessories. I remember him well as a hostile personality, his horrible glare at the ramps or events was not that of someone that was a good human being. In fact he punched a young kid in the face at an event here in Australia and stood glaring at us menacingly. He pretty much destroyed vision as a label for us after doing what he did selfishly because his pay was getting cut and he was having personal issues which he took out on anyone that he just thought he could if he could willingly get away with it. Unfortunately he took it out on a girl that didn't survive his attacks. They never should let him out, I don't believe he will ever be a good person in society, he's nothing but a no good murderous stalker.

Gator lost it when street skating got big. He didn't completely ruin Vision. Vision had Mark Gonzales on their team. He pretty much made street skating what it is today. I had a Mark Gonzales deck way back in the day. At the end of the day Gator was just a minor character. He wasn't a Tony Hawk or Christian Hosoi. He wasn't even that good. His only claim to fame was raping and murdering his girlfriend and stuffing her in a surfboard bag. If he got out of prison there'd probably more than a few people gunning for him.

When people get released, as much as the crime they commited was horrible, their freedom/parole allows them to remind people they just suffered and have missed the best slice of their life for some absurd crime they didn't need to commit in the first place, hence warning others off the same insanity. If they don't get released they can't act as some sort of warning beacon, people forget they exist, their crime, they forget about their punishment and their victim and what they lost making society really the biggest victim.

Had he not been thrown into the spotlight at such a young age and had his narcissism fed so much then ripped away this tragedy might not have happened. Gator is a POS for sure but there is a lot of POS walking around free that are probably way more dangerous and less if at all reformed.

Whilst Michael Alig walks freely amongst us after hacking up a drug dealer in NYC in the late 90’s. I came up skating before/during and after this time. I remember hearing the news about him and his crime and I felt sick, saddened for Jessica’s family and friends. Bottom line, he confessed to the crime. If that is the punishment for that crime then I don’t understand why people are upset.

Yes I was there too. We had a name for Gator after that and it wasn't Gator the Skater, it was "Gator Rage"..which was an apt description of his personality trait. Some of the kids thought that incident was cool but I saw more of that from him and just thought of him as a vicious weirdo. I was a few years older than some of the other kids so I got to hang and see more, saw some really cool stuff but didn't like Gator ever..in fact I gave it to him a few times myself because I didn't like him or his attitude..smashing boards screaming and carrying on like a psycho when he couldn't stick a trick.

Really sucks that a skater at my local skate park offed his girlfriend back in 2019. She was last seen getting stuffed in his trunk & still is missing to this day. We tried to get the dude to break up with her & get off meth but he wouldn't listen. I'll never forget getting calls when he made the news & appeared at a skid row DTLA open mic night rapping about the killing. Shocking that we all spent years skating with a future murderer. I have forgiveness in my heart for Gator. He hasn’t done himself any favors in trying to explain Jessica’s death as “rough sex gone wrong”. Still 30+ years is a long time, and without the notoriety he’d probably be out already. He confessed, did his time, and is repentant. As a society that believes in redemption we need to show forgiveness. He will forever be branded a murderer no matter where he is.
