Well, Moynihan did and he got vilified for it and all he was doing was calling attention to it. Thomas Sowell speaks / writes about the history this and how our assistance and welfare polices contributed to it. Personally I'm not sure how we change the policies to ensure nutritional support or other assistance is available for single mothers while ensuring the funds are used for the intended purpose and do not continue to be a cheese trail to follow.

I knew what it was and that segregation used to be, but I grew up wondering how older people I knew could ever have bought something so backward and stupid. I’ll tell you something else, in all my years, I have never personally heard anyone use the n-word in a pejorative manner toward anyone in my presence. You see I am Irish, and that would have been a golden opportunity I would never have let slip by me without action and/or loud comment.

if we can't "put the (traditional values) toothpaste back into the old tube", then we need a new tube. the traditional family/values that served us so well for millennia didn't just appear overnight. it was purpose built through trial and error from biological clay and cultural mortar over centuries. we must begin this work again with a long-term view.

The tube has to be replaced unfortunately. Trying to undo the tangled mess of yarn we have back to 1960, just isn't worth it. even if we could do it, and I don't with any amount of crudulity believe we can. The toothpaste itself has to want to go back into the tube, and it refuses based on ideology exponentially reinforced by technological advancement. New tube = only option, and frankly it work for everyone, in fact it will only work for a few.

"Problem of Facts!?" Can Americans deal with the simple stuff? Do skyscrapers have to hold themselves up? Do the designers of skyscrapers have to figure out how to distribute the steel? How could twenty-two years go by without "experts" discussing the distribution of steel down the structures regardless of whether or not a mere 200 ton airliner could do the deed? And the depreciation of automobiles purchased by consumers is not a fact to economists.

It seems black folk have been the canary in the coal mine. We should have been & should be paying attention to the restoration of family values. As well as all the institutions and organisations who have been working hard to destroy them.
@McCracken216
@McCracken216 Ай бұрын
What institutions 'worked hard' to destroy them? I'm sure it can all seem very insidious but let's face it, nobody held a gun to 'black folks' heads and told them to abandon the family structure, neglect education and achievement, adopt a powerless victim mentality, accept lowered expectations or go on government assistance. Yes, the enablers gave them plenty of encouragement and justification, but in the end they chose it for themselves.
@williamleadbetter9686

@McCracken216 progressives & socialist institutions are the ones I speak of. The fundamental problem with the left is there empathetic utopianism always outruns their non-existent logic and reason. Often, they have not arrived at their value systems using reason rather illogical false empathy. Those that do not use reason cannot be reasoned with. And yes to a large extent I agree with you take for example the practice of abortion no one is holding a gun to blacks head's making them have more abortions per capita than anyone else that is their own free choice and of their own free volition. It is also similar in other areas.

Glenn, can you identify a single, critical / vital societal or cultural element / movement on which the Black Community would be considered above average in performance or seen as the vanguard of positive change? Conversely, what societal elements could be identified in which the Black Community is lagging behind or seen as leading efforts that create deleterious effects on the broader society & culture. Finally, what does it say about the present state of affairs and outlook for the Black Community when these two hypothetical lists are compared?
@johnobrien5037

Too many so called "leaders" of the black community are charlatans who have made very lucrative careers from race baiting...there's no money in the cure, only the sickness so why would they help the situation and stop the gravy train?. In addition, there's an absolute refusal by Dems -now progressives- to admit that their policies have been an abject failure. As Glenn states, the survival of the narrative matters more than evidence screaming back something different.

@@johnobrien5037 The black community has had many, many _shamans,_ people who entreat the "powers that be" for a benign environment, but almost no actual _chiefs_ who direct and lead people in the way toward group prosperity. The closest to _cheifs_ we have had have been people like Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, and Louis Farrakhan. I'm not Muslim in any way, but I can see that they always had more to say to black people about taking control of our own destiny and doing the right thing for ourselves than entreating white people for a benign environment. Take, for example, Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March...an attempt to move black men to be more effective agents of good in our own communities. Who else on the national stage is willing to tell black people what we ought to be doing as actual _leaders_ instead of "spokespeople?"
