The Problem With Ankama and Dofus

In this video I highlight what I believe to be some major issues with Ankama and Dofus. The first problem is their lack of focus, Ankama (a small company in comparison to AAA gaming companies) has way too many projects they are working on simultaneously. Dofus, Dofus Retro, Wakfu, Waven, Dofus Unity, Krosmaga, One More Gate, etc. They also have a Wakfu anime and tons of other stuff that are a part of on their online store (mangas, visual novels, general merchandise). Tackling on all of these projects at the same time is not realistic for such a small company. My opinion is that they stick to one or two major projects and invest most if not all of their time and resources on improving that project while seeking feedback from the players. For example, Dofus Unity and Waven should in my opinion be their major focus. However, these games have been talked about for many years without much updates (except that Waven is in alpha).
Another major issue in my opinion is the lack of advertisement outside of France. The international community is a missed opportunity for Ankama. There is no reason Dofus and games made by Ankama cannot be as popular as Runescape or other popular MMOs. It can happen if they are willing to put in the resources. Instead of working on games like One More Gate, they could invest some money in sponsoring a Twitch streamer and having them play their game so that their fanbase will be likely to download it. This would in turn send thousands of players to Dofus. Not everyone will be a fan of turn based games, but the unique and awesome gameplay of Dofus will be sure to excite many viewers (especially if they start to think about how fun games like final fantasy tactics was back in the day or maybe they are a fan of chess). Many people don't even know that Dofus exists! That brings me to my second point, the french Dofus channel is much more frequently updated compared to the international channel. There is a new Temporis server in 6 days and it hasn't even been mentioned on the international Dofus channel?! Who is in charge of this? It makes such little sense to me. They can't even provide English/Spanish subtitles for the French Dofus channel which is a shame. It would take such little effort to have someone translate French to English/Spanish for each video. The last commercial for Dofus was on Miniclip a very long time ago (2005 era) and it was apparently on TV for a short amount of time. Although I have heard there has been Temporis commercials? This might attract old/returning players but NOT new players. For some odd reason, Dofus isn't even on Steam anymore but Wakfu is...How is that possible? Wakfu has a much smaller population of players but Dofus is the one left out? How are new players supposed to find your game Ankama?
I don't say any of this out of hate. In fact, it's the opposite. I love Dofus and the Ankama game universe but sometimes they need to hear the truth. It's ok to love a game and also be critical of it when there are problems.

They're basically running like a big Company when they're actually just tiny. It nice to see the ambition but, they need to actually put all their eggs in one basket and Advertise it. The only ad for Dofus I've ever seen was one. The only reason I know about the games at all is because of Wakfu.

Yeah I agree with your point. I whish they would diversify less and focus more in their main game. Or in getting out the sequel that would be Waven, a new game with nice graphics and try to get new players in a very competitive market. I feel like they are still milking the same players from 2006 😂

The biggest problem Wakfu has at least, is the fact that there is so much content you straight up cant do without other people. And not just optional stuff, storyline main quest stuff that just leaves you stranded if you can't get help from other people.

the issue with dofus and their other games is that it takes a huge amount of time to level, gear up. The game is super grindy. The game requires so much time investment it's nuts. Those games might have worked in 2005, but not in 2022 when people have less and less time to spend.

I loved how wakfu had done gathering. You could pluck things and plant them as well. Both gave XP. You could make sure you had enough to gather it was awesome.

Hopefully the new Dofus is better. Shame cause this is the only tactical MMO pretty much that exists. It's a fun game just mismanaged a bit

I think dofus will just be a memory to me and from time to time I will came back to play the game for a while and then leave.The problem is the community is stale,no new player,only veteran.Hopefully one day,with the release of their new game,they will try to advertise it and get new players.I remember in 2010 (more or less) in Italy the game was super popoular,but I never saw an advertisment even back then,just friends convincing other friend to play the game. Just out of curiosity,are u still playing the game?

I principally came here because I wanted to play wakfu, the problem is that when I wanted to make an ankama account they won’t even let me create my account when I clearly put my info, and when I “register” and try to log in it says the password or username is incorrect

I wish this game was still good.. I really miss it but this game took up so much of my time in the past, i ran one of the first 10 guild on the rushu server to hit lvl 200, rip Revolution. good times miss you Rambo & Yoshimitsu.

The game is fluorishing if you go to mono-account server. Lots of people there and plenty of low lvl players.

Weird game. remembered having to make a new acct every few yrs because it gets mysteriously banned, and support doesn't tell me why? I could only recommend private servers, stay away from the official servers they don't know how to properly assist players nor subscribers.

They don't get banned. Ankama keeps merging games/servers/accounts and a lot of stuff gets scraped in the process. Ankama is so desperate to bring back the old players, but every attempt is causing more and more damage. They need to stop trying to resurrect the whole Dofus style and let it die already.

I wouldn't say wakfu is dead, sure the player base is not on par with dofus, but its in no way lacking There's people in most zones and you can get party to almost any content, sure before the merge it was just horrible

What fked wakfu is the economy. There are a lot of max level people and they farm everything like crazy, selling everything so such a low price unless it's 230 content. I'm lvl 215 and im struggling with actuall doing anything cause I farm as much as I can to only sell for like 500.000 kammas a billion gear that ON AVERAGE should be a lot more expensive so that would be an amazing fix.

Krosmaga is ded, and yes only played by french speakers, same goes for Dofus retro, Wakfu lost a lot of players, people complains about the absurd RNG of the enchantment system + big grind gear for a vertical progression MMO, yes, wakfu has more than 200 levels and they lost a lot of players after adding more than 200 levels, they had to merge the only 2 french servers and the only 2 non french speakers servers, spanish and english servers, the game is not even casual friendly whenever you keep increasing your levels, and that's just bad for such a small community. Average ankama, ignores the players feedback, there are just less and less international players, making a bunch of new projects that are gonna be abandoned, runing the company like they're big enough to hold it all properly. The reality is that, they're just doing a really bad management, they should just focus on improving Dofus and Wakfu, their main games.

Nekako sticem utisak da je Dofus ultra popularan bio u svoje vreme na balkanu. Moj stari guild je zeljan da se okupi na 3.0 verziji. I ne postoji bolji Tactical Turn Based MMORPG od Dofusa.

The thing killed dofus was the toxic international playerbase I played it when it first came out when I was like 14 the game was so toxic so many guilds with supposed top players just gate keeping everything being overall dick heads and ganking low level players abusing the nation system and the weak jail player protection system couldn't even level up or gear up properly unless you kissed the ass of these gate keepers

If those projects make enough money it's normal for Ankama to hire people to do them. Doing only one game doesn't mean more players on this game. Giving Dofus 3x the team it has won't make it a lot more successful that it is, it will just make Ankama loose money. Ankama survive by making small projects with small successes. Trying to focus on a single thing would pretty much kill them in the long run.
