The Problem With Black Mold & Dampness in Homes in the UK

It is overwhelmingly caused by lifestyle of the inhabitants, either one or all of not heating the property properly, overcrowding, not ventilating adequately, drying clothes indoors and poor cleaning regimes. I have witnessed this many times even in brand new homes built to the latest insulation, heating and ventilation standards where black mold is present in every room.

I have worked in domestic housing for over 20 years. At the core of this problem are three things. 1. Condition of the property 2. Location of the property 3. The way people are living in the property. Ventilation is key to a healthy home and body. In these days of high heating costs and poor quality homes, it's in our nature to try to seal up our home, keep the heat in and cold out. This is exactly the problem. In a rush to create a warm and cosy home we're also creating the perfect conditions for mould to grow. Ventilation is everything, but we sometimes see it as letting cold air in. If your house is breathing better then you will be, especially if you're in it for long periods of time. That's another issue!

Very eloquently articulated indeed. It's clear from those photos that the landlord/managing agent is trying to obviate themselves of responsibility and financial costs by attributing blame on the tenants. I suspect that the mold is throughout the hse which wld counter their argument that it is due to the tenants cooking practices. Shame on them for that, opening windows wld not rid this issue. I suggest they move or complain to the council or external agency that oversees this as they have a duty of care to the tenants. Very well put you're in the wrong game my friend a burgeoning career in politics awaits you lol 😊
