Anime merch is ridiculously overpriced. That being said, the reason Demon Slayer is so much specifically is because of Aniplex. The entire 25 ep of Kill La Kill will run you 160 dollars and you can only get it in "Collector's Edition" form from Rightstuf. Aniplex loves to overcharge stuff.

Anime physical media has always been expensive. It’s now even more with the fact that physical media in general is dying. So it’s more of a niche hobby. Add in inflation, and well, you’ve got an expensive hobby on your hands! I collect but I know it’s not for everyone.

Blue Rays of 1 season split into 2 parts- $100 The Manga- $10 each, some of these manga sets can go for $500-$700 The Anime figures- $100-200 for a nice figure. The video games, cards, Merch... And they expect people to not only keep up financially with 1 anime, but They expect people to do this with Multiple animes.

I agree with you, but what you want to do is go to second-hand media stores. I understand lower quality sets were made, but it's super hard to find the OG stuff anymore as brand new sets. But you can find older sets sometimes just looking through second bookstores and shops.

When I first started getting into Anime I use to buy a lot of Anime and Manga and usually would get the whole series without much worry, but that was 15 years ago and that was through my high school and college years. As time went on, I started to buy less because my life gotten busy with jobs and starting a family, but also I noticed the prices were increasing while at the same time they were selling less of it. It’s like how u mentioned they sell 11 episodes and not 12-13 for $40 and IMO just selling 12-13 episodes for $40 is a bit pricy. As I mentioned I would get the whole series before for the same price or for $50-$60 and it would have 24 episodes or it would be one season with 12-13 but it would have extra things with it and not just the show itself. Basically, they got more greedy as time went on and people are just buying them like it’s nothing or they see it as “normal” when 10-15 years those prices for that amount of content would be considered as expensive. Either way, I still prefer hard copies of Anime I really enjoy and would want to keep on me. Many people would argue that downloading/streaming is the best way and in a way it could be, but call me old school that I sometimes worry when I can’t access the internet, there’s an error issue, a virus, or the Anime I use to watch I can’t watch anymore cus the company took them down. Oh and sometimes I could be owning an older copy that was it’s original content or something that wasn’t changed later on due to censorship or something stupid.

Collecting anime in 80,s and 90's one VHS tape with like 3 to 4 episode would of been $20+ VHS was never both Sub and Dub on a tape ones sub only cost more than Dub too. Early DVD was like VHS with only a few episodes per a disc. All these took up way more space too. You have it way better now than it used to be. Also prices most places get are next to nothing compared to Japan has to pay for series. As for Anime Figures they have always been expensive. The cheapest ones are always Model Kits look a Figma chainsawman is £60+. The model kit version wth has same posabilty yet is taller is £45 and you get 2 Figures for that price.

Yea people complaining about the anime DVDs and Blu rays being expensive wouldn't have survived during the dvd/vhs era of 2-3 episodes for $30. So I don't understand the reason for complaining other than they weren't around to know how worse it was back. Buying anime on physical disc is the cheapest it's ever been. As for anime figures they were cheaper 10+ years ago. When I got into figma back in the day the average figma was only between $25-30 and a high quality scale statue would only run you about $80. Now days the prices have doubled and tripled on figures.

@@omegashenron8 I feel like you're skipping an era of collecting Anime. Sure it was expensive with VHS, but when DVDs really got rolling that was the good era of collecting anime, more episodes on discs, subtitle options, extras like galleries and stuff good value for money, then we had Blu-Rays coming out and they had a bit better quality maybe a few additional things, but as time has gone on some DVD releases are just non existent only coming with the Blu-Rays. Not to mention they started stripping extras from regular DVD releases and only putting them on Blu-Rays, and I've bought DVDs from the same anime season with wildly different video quality, like the DVDs of How Not To Summon A Demon Lord look a hell of a lot more pixelated than my DVDs of Overlord III, seemingly to get people buying the Blu-Rays, which again you often end up having to buy sets that contain both Blu-Ray with DVDs, and not just being able to buy the Blu-Ray on their own. For me I primarily collect DVDs because I know what I'm getting at least with older releases or certain distributors, I have very few Blu-Rays because they're not worth the money most of the time, big collectors sets are the exception such as the Escaflowne set that came with the really nice box and art-book. On the other hand I also collect Anime on VHS, as that's how I grew up watching a lot of my early anime, which depending on the anime is probably equal to or more than what it was back in the day, such is the price we pay for nostalgia. But essentially sure it was expensive and takes up space to collect VHS, then we had DVDs which were pretty damn good on space and cost, then we had Blu-Rays where things have gotten more expensive and for many shows not worth the upgrade to Blu-Ray, but more recent shows they seem to be downgrading the DVD releases so people buy the Blu-Rays or just forcing you to buy the more expensive Blu-Ray if you want the DVDs because they come together, and you can't buy them separately. In short to an extent collecting VHS was worse than collecting Blu-Rays now but collecting Blu-Rays is to an extent worse than Collecting DVDs was, and DVDs were better in ways than collecting VHS and Blu-Ray was and is.

@@creditguys1358 I never skipped an era of collecting Anime. I was also collecting in the DVD era as well. I just don't understand how you can think the DVD era was best though. In the beginning you were only getting 3-4 episodes a disc and paying $30. Not to mention the quality was horrible for early dvd Anime. I have older Central park media dvd's in my collection that look like they were converted from VHS or Laser disc. I do agree that it did get better later on when they started doing complete sets and parted sets and the quality got better but it still wasn't as good as the blu ray era IMO. The Blu ray brought us superior video and audio quality as well as the ability to put more episodes on a disc. On what other format can you put 50 episodes of a Standard definition Anime onto one disc? There is no other, not to mention it saves you money and takes up less space. I do agree that the Blu ray era does have some downsides like many releases being bare bones. hardly any special features, no cool packaging. Just a blu Ray case, the episodes and maybe clean op/ed and some trailers as the features. Then there's the lazy "limited edition" releases where you're paying the extra money only to get an art box, some art cards and a couple of stickers(funiroll, Viz). Where as the DVD limited editions had more creative packaging and offered more unique stuff. There still are some companies that do really cool Limited edition sets like Sentai film works but they are one of the only ones now days. Another downside is the big companies doing less home video releases due to streaming and letting their older titles go OOP but it seems as if Funiroll is the only ones doing this. Overall both era's have their positives and negatives but I still think the Blu ray era's best because of the bang for our buck we get. 50 episodes on 1 disc for only 50 bucks? that's crazy. We don't only get a blu ray copy but also dvd? We're basically getting another copy of the show for free. I don't exactly understand why you're mad about blu ray/DVD combo's. Like I said above you're getting the show again for what's pretty much free. I no longer collect Anime DVD's unless it's something that has yet to get a blu ray or is OOP and never got a blu ray, and I always liked the idea of the combo packs because I feel it gives me more value for my money. I think you should really give Blu ray more of a chance though. New releases aren't even getting DVD's anymore unless it's something Dragon Ball, so you will have to make the move to Blu ray eventually.

@@omegashenron8 I just meant it seems you skipped over it in your comment, not personally skipping an era in collecting. While yes early DVD releases were not great being released in Volumes with only a couple episodes, but many of those included things such as trailers, interviews, bloopers, production materials, text-less openings and endings as additional things. Also while yes early DVD quality may have been bad at times, not all of them were, and the later into it we got Volumes decreased in price, better DVD quality, and as you said box sets which were better value for money. While Blu-Ray does Technically provide better video and audio quality, in most cases I cannot deem them to be reasonable enough of an improvement for me to upgrade anything I already have on DVD to Blu-Ray for the price. While you may not be able to fit 50 Standard Definition Episodes of anime on 1 DVD, but let's face it even if you can do that on Blu-Ray doesn't mean that it will be done, as such with No Game No Life the set I have contains 2 Blu-Ray Discs & 2 DVD Discs, both as such have the exact same contents with the only difference being the DVDs are Standard and the Blu-Ray is 1080p. If I bought either the Blu-Ray or the DVD separately they would take up the same amount of space as one another as they are in the exact same design cases, as such the combo pack takes up more space, and even more with the fact it has a thick outer cardboard sleeve to house both cases. See lack of Special Features is one of the biggest downsides to me, as sometimes those special features on the DVDs would be things like full staff commentary over an episode, interviews or other interesting things. Lazy "Limited Editions" are certainly one of the things that sour my taste for Blu-Ray as they are often marked up, and for what? Stickers and art cards I can make at near enough the same quality at home myself with a decent printer and right materials. I can agree some do put the effort in, again as an example of my few Blu-Ray pieces Escaflowne, has a a brilliant collectors edition, with a nice box and case design as well as a brilliant hardback art-book, the art-book alone was worth the price I payed for it, since Art-books in of themselves can be quite expensive, but I would say it is an exception that stands out from the majority, of standard releases and lazy "Limited Editions". The lack of home video releases is a sad side effect of streaming services unfortunately. See the mid and late era of DVDs to me was when we were getting the best bang for our buck, as you got the show, you got interviews, commentary, trailers, clean openings/endings, sometimes even alternate openings, or sometimes the Japanese TV spots, mini-games and other special features on the majority of DVDs, not to mention many volumes release or box sets would come with posters or other inserts in the cases, it was brilliant having every volume of Ghost In The Shell Standalone Complex have a poster of the volume cover art to put on my wall. With regards to the Blu-Ray/DVD Combos there is a very simple reason why I don't like them, for me they are quantity over quality. Now when I say quality I'm not just talking about the quality of the content on the disc, I'm talking the physical product itself, the space and cost. With regards to the quality of the content, obviously Blu-Ray has better video and audio quality than DVD by default, but often older shows that quality isn't worth the upgrade to me, unless they are fully redone from the original film remastered, if it's just an upscale, then it's not worth it, modern DVDs often sometimes seem to be forced lower quality now so that the Blu-Ray will look better for comparison, and often as well neither the Blu-Ray or the DVDs included will have anywhere near the special features older DVD releases would have. In terms of the physical product most of them are just Blu-ray cases that house both the DVDs & the Blu-Rays, not including anything extra, unless it's a marked up special edition, in terms of space because the cases have to hold both Blu-ray and DVD the cases are bigger than if they only had to hold one or the other, in terms of cost it should be cheaper if just buying the DVDs or the Blu-Rays separately. Now in terms of quantity why do I need two copies of the exact same show? If I just want to watch the show DVD is just fine for that, if I want to watch the show with the best audio and video quality then I'd get the Blu-Ray. To have both feels like I wasted money on something I only need one of, it's like having too many play-sets of the same trading card, it just isn't necessary. In my opinion at the very least the best Combo packs are ones that have separate cases for the DVDs and the Blu-Rays cause then at least you can sell one of them, cause let's face it the ones that don't most people don't want to buy lose discs. Sure new releases might not even get DVDs, outside of the DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Packs, or they might just be Blu-Ray, if I want to own the show then I will buy them, same as I will buy anime that is only on VHS or Laser Disc, because the only other option is to sail the seas. Plus on top of that at some point it will probably all swap over to 4K, which again will probably invite more price hikes, and already some 4K releases come with unnecessary clutter by having a 4K disc, a Blu-Ray disc and a DVD Disc all of the same contents, and what is the point in owning 3 copies of the exact same thing just in different quality, releases like that show you quantity to make you think you're getting more for you buck, but really you're just paying extra for stuff you don't need.

@@creditguys1358 No Game No Life was a show animated in HD though. Companies normally won't cram a dozen HD episodes onto one Blu Ray because it will affect the quality. Which is why it's only done with SD Anime. Good point about the thicker case for the combo's I forgot about that fact. Yeah bare bones special features definitely is a problem now, but it's really a problem the entire home video market has. Very few companies put effort into special features anymore. I am not really a huge special feature guy so it doesn't bother me a ton but I can understand the disappointment for those that are. Yeah, the special editions now aren't really worth the money. I'll sometimes grab them when they go on sale if it's something i really want but no way I'm paying full price. I can see your point about the combo packs being a waste of money but I personally don't see it that way because I would still be paying the same amount most likely if I were buying them separately anyway, so I might as well just have both even if I won't ever use the DVD's. I don't think the industry will ever move over to 4k only. We're already at a point where streaming is most people's preferred method and 4k is even more of a niche format than Blu Ray. They are also more expensive to produce and more expensive to purchase so I can't see them doing anything beyond Anime film's on 4k. Especially because the majority of TV Anime would look like crap on 4k as a lot were/are cheaply made.

Demon slayer in particular is expensive because its produced by aniplex. Aniplex is notorious for their prices and they rarely go on sale (from what i've heard). For example, to collect all of monogatari would cost you 1,300 dollars even though it about 100 episodes. Each season of kaguya sama cost 100 dollars (300 dollars for 39 episodes not even including the movie). Bunny girl senpai cost 125 dollars which is just 13 episodes and a movie. Japan and US have the same region. So if its expensive in Japan then so will it be in US. Otherwise people in japan will just import.

Love your video and agree w/ 100% of your takes. The anime parts problem has been going on for quite a while actually (Late 1990s or early 2000s according to my father). The Dragon Ball Z Kai Blu-ray itself was release in 11 parts (8 for Kai and the three final chapter blu-rays) before the seasons sets were made and I've reach a point where I wait months or years in order to get the complete collection or complete Season for the same or lower price than the separate releases. Recently started buying blurays of all my favorite shows. Those demon slayer sets are expensive, but the quality of the video is the best because of Aniplex. Depending on the series, i would rather pay more for better video and audio quality. If they cheap out, then the customer is gonna be pissed thinking even streams looks better than the discs.

By the 2000s, anime DVDs typically had 3-4 TV episodes for $29.99. For example, a 13 episode series like Serial Experiments Lain had four volumes (#1-4 / #5-7 / #8-10 / #11-13) @ $30 each. It's incredible what you could get in the late naughties/early 2010s at the price some things were. Regarding your Naruto figure - I believe that it is legit. It looks to be a Banpresto figure part of the Gradista line. I've got a Kakashi with the same "foot stand" at the bottom and it's leaning forward and barely stands. Sounds about right the price as well.

Just stumbled upon this video and you hit all the right points bro. The prices are insane for anime, you think demon slayer is high then try the fate series. I had to pay almost 200 bucks to get just 25 episodes!!! Now it did come with an artbook and other things but still collecting for anime is truly for the hardcore that must have it. The only way I could afford this is to save money and buy my titles in phases. Also, I had to do lots of math and calculations to find the best deals lol. I loved the video man keep up the good work.

We honestly have it made Now compared to People who were collecting Anime back in the Late 90s-Mid 2000s; I Have Some Anime VHS Tapes and DVDs from that Time Period that only have 3 Episodes at Minimum. Some had 5 If you were Lucky; Hell sometimes it was only 2 Episodes like it was when ADV Originally Released Gantz and these older DVD Releases went for the Same Prices as the Season Sets on Blu-Ray we have today. I Have the Entire Frieza Saga of DBZ on VHS in a Boxset and it's 10 Tapes, I Can only Imagine how much that Boxset Cost at Retail when it was new.

Back in the 90s anime VHS and DVDs were 3 episodes for $30... lol I collected much of DBZ, all of Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho and Ranma this way and it was brutal. So for me, being nearly 40 years old the pricing of anime feels fantastic these days. However, I completely agree with the spines of the cases... I can't have my shelf lookin that way. In general I hate that I can't pace myself collecting a series, because often the specific run I'm collecting goes out of print and then I have to rebuy. I have the Japanese Dragon Boxes, but it's really frustrating that a definitive American release STILL hasn't happened.. I've been waiting 30+ years. No new/good blu-ray set of original Dragon Ball, or GT, etc.. I would love to have all DB/Z/GT/Super someday in a thematically consistent way.

Yea I agree it’s getting expensive. I’ve been collecting for 10 years now, started pretty much my 14th birthday now I just turned 24 3 days ago. Now what I do is buy for the most part only 2-3 times a year. (For the most part bc sometimes I’ll buy a blu ray if I see it pop up on eBay for a good price) but I only buy reallly during right stuf and sentai summer and Christmas sales. I do spend a good amount though but justify it bc it’s only twice a year. Also along with buying during these sales advice I would recommend and need to do more of myself is really hone in on what you truly want/like. Don’t buy it just bc it’s cheap. Be a bit more selective with what you buy.

Amen Brother Preach It! You have to wait a year or 2 for the whole season in one set for 40 or 50 dollars cause they think they can make a killing on how they make their anime season Cores of 12 or 13 episodes per season. The BluRay doesn't exist for One Piece 1 thru 25, they have Omnibus of 3 volumes for 11.99 to 15 bucks for the One Piece Volumes all the way up to Vol 33 which contains up to Vol 97. Still will be 500 dollars for all the Vols. It's Why we're fans, side hustle after side hustle to maintain our love.

Call me old fashion, but I prefer hard copies than just downloading things. True they can be more convenient, faster, and arguably the “best” way to do this. However, what happens if there’s no access to online, there’s an error to download, corrupt files, or there’s absolutely no way to rewatch ur favorite Anime due to being outdated or when they add in new Anime and replace the older ones. My collection is mostly pirated stuff, find actually DVDs/Blu-rays like this or normal movies is not possible due to streaming, all stores where I'm from stopped selling them a while ago and only some stores like second hand stuff sells them, but yeah you can still buy online, some issues you said are completely possible, but they are all fixable if you know your way, yes like you said who hasn't live long enough doesn't know the full picture, but these are different times, so different that getting an anime or manga is so easy a simple a kid can do it and oh boy they do. For online connection obviously you need it, but if you live normally, that is being financially normal, hell even poor families have internet rather be from the neighbor or a cheap plan, getting online is easy, you can even pirate on your phone/tablet if you ever need to use public internet, and once it's downloaded it's yours, forever, watch it anytime anywhere, no connection needed, for the errors thing sure you can get some issue like maybe slow speed, maybe not enough people sharing, if that's the case there's also another way by simple going on streaming sites and get it on a way I can't really say here but you don't need others and it works just fine, about the corrupted files, I had exactly 0 corrupted files because I don't get it from shady stuff, again it really comes to know your way and the best ways and safest which takes about 2-5 seconds of google search and then maybe like 30 minutes of learning, there are rules for this if you want to be safe and get what you want with no issues, best recommendation from me is using VPN, ad blockers and use the right places and tools, that's basically it, those 4 things gets you all you want, but I do admit, it ain't perfect, nothing is, still like you said, what if it's too old, too outdated its long gone, there are still very few places that got it, its worse if you want from a specific language or country, but there's still somewhere and if it still can't find, you could try ask someone of the community see if they have and even if you still can't find it when then yeah try physical but the chances are probably worse or you could try eBay instead of amazon plenty of people sell old stuff there its hard to come buy, and I know it sounds like I'm trying come down on you I'm really not I'm just trying to explain it ain't that hard to get like a lot of people think it is, but you still need to know your way, but what i can say is its honestly very easy, takes no time to learn and if you do still want physical media you can always put it on a blank DVD/Blu-rays, basically making your own xd, but i do still love my physical manga and movies but sadly it still pricey especially now, so this is just the way I do now, it's a little sad but at least I get what want most of the time, and sorry for the long reply too @@Blacknight6577

@@hunterhadouken The rapid growth of the anime fandom is completely outpacing the logistical capabilities of manufacturing companies to keep up with the demand. It doesn't cost more than it should because the demand is higher then ever. These prices you see are the genuine market value until industrial output can catch up. When you have 100 apples to sell and 10,000 people want to buy from you, you are going to sell your apples to the highest bidders. It is quite literally supply and demand. So no, it does not cost more then it should. The cost is appropriate to the median of popularity/scarcity of the product.

Personally, you could never catch me spending upwards of 50 bucks on a single season of a show that has 4 seasons.
