The impact receipt makes so much sense! I really don't like that the blame is placed on consumers (we definitely play a part), but the industry needs to be held accountable. Thanks, Cynthia, for your continuous education

the receipt should show how much the garment workers get paid.

Yes!! A transparent cost breakdown of what the brand paid for everything that went into the item - it should be shown on the product page imo

I haven’t bought clothes in years because I refuse to buy from SHEIN and the like. Just came up on some funds and purchased a large order of Los Angeles apparel and it feels orgasmic. The jeans are so THICK 🤌🏽 I feel like they could very well last me the rest of my life lol. I truly don’t understand how the girls (and guys) are walking around wearing $5 garments that last two wash cycles 😵‍💫

Hello! I’m an instructor teaching a Social Problems class, and I have a student working on a project about the societal costs of fast fashion. She’s looking for someone to interview for the final part of her project. Would it be possible for her to contact you for an interview? I believe your insights would greatly benefit her work!

The sentiment here is good but this isn't how business or economy works. If all retailers did what is being asked, the price per garment will increase. There are brands that do all (or nearly all) of these things already and their products are priced accordingly - just buy from those and don't buy fast or affordable fashion. It's either affordable fashion or all these demands. Not to be a downer or anything, but you really can't have it both ways. Welcome to the real world. The best you can do is preach to consumers to buy long lasting quality pieces, take care of their clothes, don't try to keep up with the Joneses, and learn to mend not replace.

And people who say 'it's not the customers, it's the brands'. No. A brand needs customers to survive, you cannot sell what no one's buying. 'Blame the corpos' is just another way for regular consumers to communicate that they are not willing to give up a single cheap and abundant luxury unless it's take away from me, I will not change my behaviour until scarcity forces me to change my behaviour. Nah. Take responsibility and understand that a company cannot get profit from a customer who's not buying, so don't buy. Buy to last, and mend.

Would love to know what brands are doing all of these at “affordable” prices! I agree this isn’t how business or economy works when capitalism is at play, but that’s why I wanted to make a video challenging the current system. It’s a super nuanced conversation, but I also think fast fashion has conditioned us to expect “affordable” pricing where others are paying the price.

@@inspiroue no, that was the actual point; no brand can do that and keep their prices affordable. I would argue that it's quite simple; you pay more for better quality, craftsmanship, sustainable materials... Yes it is also a cultural thing that we expect clothes cheap, disposable and a lot of them. That's the part that needs to change. The capitalist system is a reflection and product of reality - you can't force the system to change. You can only change the reality that underlies any system and that is culture, consumer expectations and subsequent behaviour - and I don't mean expecting the commercial end to remain the same while asking that the brand reshuffle their whole business on the back end. You're already on the right track being aware of the issues, so change yourself and set an example. You won't change the world by demanding it to change.

those are nice ideas, unfortunately never gonna happen under capitalism. I mean, look at the stage of late capitalism we are in. Right now even the imperialist countries are facing the contradictions of the system, we are more than ever, waged slaves. Those big brands that need to adjust to these ideas are never gonna do it, because they are the ones who control the laws. so what we actually need is to change the whole system, change the mode of production is the only way to make sustainability work.

Agreed and couldn't have said it better - these ideas challenge the current system and are ways we can re-imagine how things work!
