I agree with Marcos, could be great, could be naff. I’m hoping all the similar scenes pulled from the original are tied to the story and not some cheap attempt at nostalgia. The action scenes look cool, looking forward to seeing the agents again.

I have to admit, I was excited at first and then as the trailer kept playing, I started thinking it looks like a soft remake. The worst part though was the last line. "Can you believe after all this time, we're going back to the matrix?" Omg, do you get it guys? He's talking to us! Do you remember the matrix? Do you? I do, I do! I love the matrix! Ugh, don't make me puke.

I feel like the Matrix "look" could be explained by (ironically) a trend towards conformity within the humans who normally live outside of the Matrix, which is often evident in other proclaimed non-conformist sub-cultures (hell one hipster once sued for improper use of his image, when he mistook a picture of someone else for him). I could see how when you first become liberated from the Matrix, get trained and then jump back in, you'd adopt similar dress to those who freed you as "I guess that's what you wear". I took the projection stuff to not so much be "your true self" as more "you choose what you look like", which can allow for people to end up dressing in a similar style. I will agree though about the wider points of the sequels being somewhat "shallow" and the lore just getting messy. Although when it comes to the main character already being a literal god, there's not many places you can go without stripping him of his powers to re-tread the first one, the stakes being too low, or the stakes being jacked up to shark jumping proportions. Doom Eternal is actually a great example of the latter, but then that's deliberately positioned as pulpy 80s cartoon cheese, rather than the "edgy AF" Matrix vibe. I don't have a lot of hope for the 4th one, going off the trailer it just felt far too "on the nose nostalgia-bait" about everything, the pills, the Alice in Wonderland references etc just feel very "Memberberry", watching the trailer I can almost hear them. "Member Neo?", "Member the Blue Pill?", "Member Alice?" etc. If the Star Wars sequels has taught me anything, that's not a sign of a new & original story.

I think that a lot of franchises in all different types of consumed media suffer from the same problem of starting off with something that looks grounded in some part of reality, but due to seeing the appeal of "The First Iteration" of their franchise, they want to improve/keep the things they like. For the Matrix, they really loved that Goth aesthetic, and I can't blame them lol

I think the difference between the Prequel Jedi and Obi-Wan in the original film is that the style looks like simple clothes anyone could/would wear anyway, and since the Jedi have this semi-ascetic lifestyle the robes Obi-Wan wears can be reverse-adapted into something more extravagant with the fancier layers and shiny boots. But then when Qui-Gon explores Tatooine in the prequels, he changes his robes, so... As far as the Matrix goes, I got the sense that their clothing style is supposed to represent one group against the other and you needed a visual cue for that, and since they're working "underground" anyway and not interacting with the general population, it doesn't matter how outstanding they look since they're only in the Matrix for a short amount of time. That's just devil's advocate though, It probably was more people going "this looks cool" behind the scenes that drove it.

Anyone who wants to dress flamboyantly or otherwise non "dark" in a sense probably didn't want to be part of the crews that needed subtlety, speed, wits, shadows, and techy interests to survive. Plenty of space in zion for the people who cared about their personal poppy fashion. Makes perfect sense to me. Switch was probably the most likely form a deviance you'd see in these crews realistically

Gonna have to call bull on that Star Wars comparison/prequel complaint. You don't go around thinking Uncle Owen and other robey people on Tatooine (sequels and prequels) are Jedi because they wear similar clothes, like Qui-Gon is barely recognised as Jedi, only when Anakin sees he has a lightsaber. I think that's enough to explain how the rarely seen Obi-Wan doesn't particularly need to wear some disguise on Tatooine at least. The prequel Jedi while often wearing specific robes, do show variety amongst them and being very similar to garments worn by common people. That's consistent in the films and in alternate media. They're iconic to us as an audience, but not as greatly in universe. While the silver protocol droid does recognise Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon as Jedi at the start of TPM, that can be chalked up to their plain unassuming robes standing out as out of place in that context, where it doesn't on Tatooine and in other locations.

All the problems you mention are directly connected with the "trend" (it started so long ago that it's not a trend anymore) of making everything "cooler", more appealing and easier to be grasped by the masses rather than being logical, creative and pushing forward. The result is bigger profits for the studios and publishers which some may say it's fine but shouldn't culture and art take the role of motivation for the individuals and society in general for personality growth - be more creative, more intelligent etc.? We can see the same problems in video games and books. Almost everything is created for the sole purpose of entertainment and profit.

I get it. Its about first impressions and how people or groups of people projects themselves through appearance suggests to viewers the relationship or power dynamics among groups of characters. One key evidence is how the Oracle has a humble appearance despite her role. But if theyre all the same...theres less to digest.

I'd never given this any real thought before this video, but while watching it I had an interesting thought-wouldn't dressing in different styles give them more individuality, humanity, and freedom? The whole point is that they're trying to free humanity from the control of the machines, so what better way to show that then by making the people more vibrant and distinct?
@flightlessbread8058

Maybe Neo's crew dresses darker because they have such a big responsibility and can't afford to not take things seriously, but other crews could certainly look different. Maybe there's a crew who specializes in hiding in the matrix so they dress normally, or a crew who specializes in driving vehicles so they dress like bikers. They wouldn't be blowing their cover by dressing differently than they are currently, with everyone from outside having a "uniform" of long coat and sunglasses

Hi mayo, personnaly, I'm not hyped about Matrix 4. I don't hate that the film will exist, I'm just like "ok, cool". It may be an awesome movie though, I'm just not waiting for it. I'm not sure I get what you tried to say about the clothing fashion between matrix 1 and 2, I think the cyberpunk fashion was just a fundamental part of the films, and maybe the Wachowskis tried to insist on this aspect by making it more recognisable and kind of "flashy". It may not be a good idea though, but I think it kinds of cristallizes the visual essence of the franchise. About the scenario of Matrix 4, I watched the trailer and I don't know what to expect, maybe something like this: "this is a new generation of the matrix, everyone but you lost their memory, because you're the one..", and so on. I just hope they are not trying to milk the franchise 20 years later because it would ruin theses films. I liked Matrix reloaded even if I struggle to find a sense to the scenario, it is fun to watch. Revolution was too long though, especially the fight at the Zion's gates. (sorry for the broken english)

Perhaps ALL the crews share a similar consciousness, being that they are humans who have escaped the Matrix but choose to reenter it. Also, they are warriors, operatives, renegades with similar desires about raking down the machines' control of humanity. So it makes sense to me that their sense of self, aka look, would have similarities. Look at Goths in real life, we all share a similar aesthetic, even though we live all across the globe. That's why I don't find the Matrix so hard to believe in.

The clothes were a hit changing the clothes would have been seen as a bad financial decision and even some fans would have hate it as some kind of treason, you are doing a sequel therefore you need to stick to it, they all want the same messiah, they all are anti machines and pro awakening therefore they dressing alike is not impossible it lacks of individuality but they are supposed to be an army and it is an easy way to recognize other hackers when in the matrix, I would say that the problem is the one that you state, the clothing is more expensive, and more elegant, and more fashion, in a similar way the new movie (which seems like it will suck) has more blue pills that actually do not have the same appearance and they are too much present on the trailer.

stop saying "woke" it doesnt mean anything, its just the word you use to justify your inability to explain why you dont like something. The original matrix was a story about self discovery and is EXPLICTELY an alagory for living as a trans person and overcoming the hidden systemic oppression that surrounds us all in day to day life, both directors have said such...and are also trans. It also popularised the blue pill/red pill metaphor...it is arguable the most 'woke' movie of all time. And its great...so please...use better vocabulary when criticising. You using 'woke' to discribe modern films compared to THE MATRIX is stupid.
