The Problem With Minecraft's Horror Mods

Don't get me wrong, there are some really good Minecraft horror mods out there (Man from the Fog, some versions of Herobrine, the Cave Dweller, the Goatman-the list goes on). But I think what's really lacking is the atmosphere! The modpack Fear Nightfall is pretty good in that area, but I would like to see if different mods could incorporate that as well!

I get what you mean less jump scares and more calm before the storm moments.

You're exactly right. Indeed, some mods already incorporate some of those aspects (the chase, the build up). It would be really nice if they were to amplify them further!

I remember when nights have actually been dark in Beta. Those were the times...

@@Tommy_Horror Yeah Beta 1.7.3 was the peak than it kinda went into the wrong direction, especially when Notch left.

i will say if you're looking for something super heavy on the atmosphere _and_ on the survival aspect of Survival Horror, the Betweenlands mod (it's in 1.12) hits the spot for me. not as outright scary, and in some places downright comforting, but _boy howdy_ does it excel at spooky atmosphere in just the right places! (specifically: the Barrishee, Them, the Peat Mummy, and of course: the Cave Dweller But It Can Steal Your Torches, aka the Stalker.)

@@Tommy_Horror If you want horror you should play the Amnesia games if you havent tried those before, that does most of its horror through the environment, ambience, seeing enemies but hidinng from them rather than fighting

If mojang actually gave it a shot, they could do something pretty damn interesting

The only problem I see is that they've become oversaturated. Different people react to or view horror in different ways. Just because so many KZbinrs are jumping on the anti-Dweller mod bandwagon does not mean everyone is inclined to agree with them or you. Some people actually do find said mods scary, and even though you and many other's don't doesn't mean your opinion is the "correct" (or "incorrect") one. You're free to your opinion, but please stop trying to tell people what mods they should or shouldn't make, play or make videos on. If you don't like a certain category or style of mods, just don't play them. Pretty simple. And I say this as someone who is neither for nor against horror as a genre, having never particularly held an interest in it while simultaneously still being willing to experience it from time to time purely on a whim.

I see where you're coming from! Don't get me wrong, I still think they're pretty scary (which is why I actually play and enjoy a lot of them). I just think that if Mojang had the ressources to do a whole thing about the poison potato update, they could also give horror a try and put some devs on the job.

@@Tommy_Horror Perhaps. But we all know that Mojang and their controllers in Microshaft are too afraid to do anything that might deviate too far from what they deem "safe for kids" game development.
