@@Quiem88 chakara is an India word that translates to your body’s energy. Of course there is no scientific study that proves it’s existence, but it’s a very real word and a very real concept. Of course no one is going to be able to climb up trees with only their feet and do random jutsus but this concept does exist and is very ingrained in Indian spirituality and culture.

I just assumed that everyone is aware that there are those individuals that have specialized abilities that seem inhuman. I think that is kept secret isn’t those abilities, but rather the fact that anyone can attain these abilities through the use of this energy known as nen. Most probably think that some individuals just have special powers and others don’t. That’s why the idea of nen getting out to the public is such a bad idea, because then everyone realizes they can all have those kinds of power.

@@brandonjoseph1486 the episode where Wing explains and awakens their nen? Just watched it, he didn’t say it was commonly known. He just said it was a power dwelling within everyone. If nen was commonly known why wouldn’t most of the hunter exam applicants know about it? Gon, Killua, and especially Kurapika who seems well read. Fandom page: “Because one can craft just about any sort of psychic power through only using their mind, Nen is also a dangerous power unknown to the public at large.” “Nen is like any other skill, in that there are those who will learn it faster than others. Some are able to discover and learn to manipulate their aura on their own without having formally learned it. These individuals are typically known as "geniuses," "psychics," or "superhumans" to the public. This can be anything from inadvertently being able to use the basic techniques of Nen or unconsciously developing a unique Nen ability that can be used without really understanding how or why one is able to do so. Typically, geniuses of Nen are exceptional artisans in their own fields and their abilities are related as such. Notable Geniuses within the series include: Neon Nostrade, the fortuneteller. Benny Delon, the mass-murderer. Zepile, the sculptor. Komugi, the Gungi world champion. Alluka Zoldyck, the Miko.”

Yeah like for battles in heavens arena, the public probably thinks its all special effects. Or atleast that is how it is marketed to the public. Also for the Super Wealthy upper class Elites, Kingdom rulers, World Leaders, ect.... I would assume that the highest ranking individuals who hold the most power within their organizations, are privy to Nen and well aware of its capabilities. I bet Most are actual Nen users themselves, but because of that understanding of Nen, they chose to propagate this general ignorance towards it or even Regulate/Illicit the teaching of it due to the the threat of potential danger that 1 genius Nen user could could pose. Especially if that user had a severe hatred to their regime. If Nen was widespread throughout the public, I imagine just a small group of opposition could trade their lives for some disastrous Nen Curse that could easily wipe out an upper-class regime. The people at the top want to stay on the top, so it makes sense that Nen knowledge is regulated.

My Theory: most nen use requires a secondary interest or desire to draw from, this is why there are so many game based abilities out there. By letting nen be a secret and letting people primarily develop outside interests instead, when they finally do learn nen their abilities will be stronger. Discovering nen too early might handicap a person’s full potential.

Nen is based off emotions and your personality. Which is why many NEn abilities, even the names ,are based off the user’s mentality or perspective of things. On the subject of age, I think Wing stated children in general have an easier time awakening Nen since they arent distracted by life that adults are or the older you get. Kurapika makes a small comment to the old guy on the ship that “despite” his age, he learned Nen quickly. So it is implied age plays a factor, with the older people potentially finding it more difficult but this is moot. The 4th prince, who is in his late twenties or early thirties, had potential as high as Gon and Killua: He awakened Nen (without needing to be focibly awakeend) once he became aware of its existance within a week (Which Wing theorized the boys could achieve as well if they arent short on time). He mastered Ten in a day and Zetsu in another and his body subciouscienly created its own Nen ability seperate from his Spirit Beast However, this may do to him being a specialist. His Hunter teacher even remarked his talent is “scary” and far surpasses both her own and her partners, who are experienced hunters. His aura is strong and evil enough, it scared her into what may happen if he were to use Nen for his own gains.

*Answer:* According to Wing-san, every person uses Nen, as it is just harnessing the life force of the individual and some Nen just leaks out of the top of the head normally. The weak players in Greed Island could have a completely rudimentary understanding of aura, just enough to make them slightly stronger than regular humans. All it would take, is a slight decrease in passive aura loss.

@@mynamedontmatter4796 them being the best of the best may just refer to their ability to "hunt" rare items, rather than being masters of nen, since a hunter doesn't need to be a God of nen to be a great hunter, they just usually happen to develop together, like Morel. He's a super awsome hunter and nen user, but he knew he couldn't beat the ants with raw power, and instead needed to be tactical and smart. The same could apply to greed island, where even an average nen user could be smart or crafty enough to get a copy of the game, not to mention they could always work in teams to increase their overall skills and competency, as shown by the alliance formed to get to Razor near the end of the game

@@mynamedontmatter4796 - it’s the best of the best who want money as well as have access to billionaires. The ones coming to a billionaire’s call are likely not motivated by deep resolve but by money (a generalization with exceptions or partial exceptions like Tsezguerra and Genthru) which hunters have plenty of by putting it on their massive credit line and/or doing what they love (discovering new species of plants and animals, gourmet cooking, etc.). Actually it's pretty realistic that the association doesn't have a monopoly on the knowledge of nen. It's like any secret; the more people are taught, the more it will spread. And like a rumor or a conspiracy, most will take it to be myth or exaggeration; but a select few will follow through and test the information and seek out further instruction. Even with the groups you listed, that's still an extraordinarily small portion of the population. As for Heaven's Arena, how often do you witness something on the internet that you personally can't explain, but you make up in your mind that there must be some logical explanation regarding science and/or misdirection?

From twitter: Yeah I was wondering if Togashi could retcon it somehow. Maybe thru a character w/ an ability that alters perception so the audience believes they witnessed special effects rather than paranormal activity (second ability: “subliminal messaging” for TV viewers). Condition: only affects non-nen users. Second condition: perception alterations retroactively removed from memory once nen is awakened. Third condition: Subliminal messaging requires weekly shu application to all broadcasting equipment. Would be cool if the guy with green eyes and long gray hair from Heaven’s Arena who interrupted the announcer to explain the different scoring styles of judges (Gon vs Hisoka, episode 36) turned out to be the one with such an ability.

The issue with this…issue…regarding the secrecy of Nen is that Hunter X Hunter, as a series, has all its story arcs dealing almost exclusively with people who are in a position to know things. First, it’s dealing with the Hunter Association, who make the teaching of Nen into a core component of their induction process. Then it’s the mafia families from around the world, who, being a bunch of major organized crime syndicates, would be, amongst other things, involved in the trade of information that they are probably not supposed to be in possession of, and their awareness of Nen is what made them the influential underworld figures that they are. Other groups, like the Zoldyk Family and the inhabitants of Meteor City (including the Phantom Troupe) represent groups that might well have developed Nen on their own. In other words, as a series, we almost never get any engagement with the…regular…people of this world, i.e. the people who are not in any position to know any of the things our main characters know…unless it’s part of the plot for them to learn, like for the princes and their retinues during the succession war. Regarding the display of superpowers in Heaven’s Arena, there may indeed be curiosity, regarding these superpowers that the highest-level combatants seem to have. However, when it comes to investigating these strange powers and people…who would the governments of the world typically turn to…? If only there was some international organization of incredibly capable individuals, many of whom specialize in investigations into the strange and unknown…Oh…Right. It’s kinda convenient that the Hunter Association is positioned as one of the major arbiters in determining who can and cannot learn Nen via who gets into the association, and is also the kind of organization that most people would likely turn to in order to investigate the phenomena that might arise as a result of Nen-use in the public. With Greed Island, it’s implied that everyone who is currently on the island is a Hunter on some level. After all, Greed Island is listed a game created by Hunters for Hunters. Furthermore, the Chairman Election arc showcases that there are all sorts of different tiers of Hunters, ranging from the competent to the…less… In Genthru’s case, I don’t think it’s ever officially stated that he wasn’t a Hunter. After all, he was one of the players hired by Battera to clear the game, and Battera was largely hiring Hunters to do so. So there’s every possibility that Genthru was a Hunter too. Heck, if they’re willing to give Hisoka a pass, why not Genthru and his buddies? Keep in mind that Nen, being powered by Aura, aka a person’s own life force, means that it’s a power that potentially any person in the world can learn to use. At some point in the past, someone came upon the method of consciously controlling this power, and ultimately developed the means of doing so. We can even see this during the Chimera Ant arc, when Rammot, the first ant “initiated” (unintentionally by Gon and Killua) sees his Aura, he’s already experimenting with it, and developing a rudimentary form of Gyo, with the ants quickly skipping the trial and error step the development of any such art form would have thanks to the fact that they are able to rip the information from Pokkle’s mind later on. Ultimately, other groups could easily stumble across the existence of Aura and, through the same process of trying things out, ultimately reach the same kind of development that official Nen-users have. The only issue with this is, as you’ve pointed out, the fact that they often use the very same techniques and terminology used by the Shingen Ryu. That could be explained as these other groups adopting these terms as they learn of them, which is almost definitely the case for the Zoldyks, given their close ties to Netero, the guy who runs the Shingen Ryu. However, it is probably just a pass on Togashi’s part to avoid having to come up with culturally specific variants of Nen and its associated terminology. As for the Kakin Princes, an important thing to remember is that the two Nen-users among them are the two eldest and highest-ranked of the lot, with the greatest access to the kingdom’s resources and their own vast personal resources. Benjamin is even in charge of the kingdom’s military, which grants him an unmatched degree of power and influence. And, of course, given the nature of the succession war, which they knew they’d be participating in sooner or later, it would be in their best interests to keep their younger siblings…out of the loop. And, of course, in the case of Tserriednich, it’s shown that his own bodyguards have a vested interest in keeping him from learning about Nen, and it was only Kurapika’s casual reveal of it to everyone that he found out, at which point their reaction was, “well…shit.” Because it is clear from the get go that the last thing a mad artist like Tserriednich should have access to is potentially reality-breaking superpowers. And, sure enough, the moment he starts learning it, things start going south in a really bad way. Ultimately, the issue regarding the secrecy of Nen largely comes from the fact that the characters of Hunter X Hunter are almost entirely from people in the classes that would put them in the position to be “in the know” about such things, whereas the vast majority of the regular population, the ones the protagonists almost never really deal with, are not explored in any meaningful sense, which makes the knowledge of Nen seem much more widespread than it really is.

I personally don't agree at all that the secrecy of nen was handled poorly, at least completely or with the statement that it doesn't make sense. First I think it should be considered that the hunter association isn't the world government or police, they are, in fact, a private organization, their word and rules aren't the law, and they also weren't the ones that discovered nen, or the firat to use it, so it would have been imposible to keep under perfect secrecy. So they try to keep it a secret as much as they can, especially in relation to the association. if any hunter, even the president or vice president saw someone teaching nen, they wouldn't be able yo stop them or put them in jail or anything really. Second: the association in the hands of netero took on a very weird note, that very possibly wasn't shared with the previous presidents. It wasn't like he didn't take anything serious and just decided to teach criminals nen, but he did bend the rules as much as he could to get what he wanted, interesting and strong nen users in the world, and it can be seen how cheadle in the manga is actually trying to change that system, for example by basing the hunter exam in inteligence and the personality of the subject instead of just power. third: so, since nen doesn't belong to them, and they don't own the copyright for ita teaching xd, and it can also be awoken by anyone in the right circunstances, then it makes sense that various people around the world could gain nen, experiment with it, even if they don't learn it perfectly, and teach it to someone else. also, the tabuu must be something that the association popularized, but it isn't a law, that is why some nen users know of it and respect it, while others break it without hesitation. And even in the association their are situations in which keeping the secret isn't of the upmost priority. or also some people that keep it a secret because it suits them, like the fighters in heavens arena, that way they aren't normal people with an advantage but celebrities to anyone. fourth: the world of hunter x hunter is a world with monsters and magical creatures, as well as worldly famous Assassins that own a mountain. so you could explain how in heavens arena people get really exited about what they are watching, but they just explain it as super natural powers, and in the case of hisoka literal magic, something they can't attain. it isn't perfectly, but it actually does alot of things well. and also, when you're writing a story, you can't always think of every single detail perfectly, sometimes you will have the greatest idea, but a little mistake, that isn't super predominant in the story at large fucks it up, you just have to abandon reason and put it in, or the other option which is to not do it at all, or really dumb it down. for example if everyone knew nen, maybe some other aspects of it would have to be taken out, so it would make sense, like the conditions and punishments, and world devastating nen that comes from evil emotions. its a shame you don't read long coments, but great vid btw, even if i didn't agree at all 😂

Yeah I wanted to say something similar. Furthermore, if people using nen is like how people in our world recognize "chi" or the like. People really wouldn't care about learning it I must have had an expressed interest all the same. It's not just people's capacity for learning, but it's the actual WILL to do so that's lacking. To most people, why learn nen when you can have the power of gun.

You saw this with one of the princes. When he found out that just “seeing” aura takes a year for the average person, he dismisses any thought of learning it as it takes “too long”. Most (non hunters)people that do manage to awaken Nen just master the basics to their initial degree and that’s it. Most Nen users like actual trained hunters aren’t the norm. That is why hunters stand out from others, even if learning or knowing Nen can be done without needing to be a hunter. Not every nen user is a hunter and not everyone on Greed Island was a hunter. You just have to have awakened Nen to access the game, it doesnt matter how strong you are. That only matters when trying to complete the game. Hunters just: Are guaranteed to know Nen On average, have higher knowledge and skills in Nen than other nen users, as some of princes bodyguards admitted.

To correct you, it’s illegal (by the Association) for a hunter to publicaly teach or casually reveal the exitance off Nen such as showing off an ability. Kurapika stated this on the boat and that only in a time of crisis, Nen can be revealed to the average onlooker or person who has no knowledge of it. Something that shows how netero, even when he wasn't a completely bad person and did care about people and the state of the world, he still was very selfish, caring the most about strength and interesting challenges. The whole fuzziness of this could have been avoided if Togashi bothered to plan his stuff out ahead. That said, it's not particularly hard to write a universe more coherent than Dragon ball (it's not bad, but nobody is nominating it for any best writing awards), and HxH does only introduce the conflict of any given Arc in the arc itself, a la dragonball, but it still feels natural, so props to Togashi.

I do agree that it's at large a writer's convenience, but for whatever it's worth: This is a magical world where various incredible feats are possible. When an ordinary person looks at a Nen-user, they see an incredible individual. They wouldn't see a framework within anything is possible, because they couldn't know it as such. While many institutions-Hunter Association included-will teach active Nen usage, they will only teach it to individuals that further their interests. A bodyguard corporation would certainly educate key members of their staff, and who's to say top doctors don't actively use Nen in this universe? It's strange when certain individuals don't know of Nen, such as Killua, or Tserriednich, but it could potentially be excused. Maybe Killua was not considered ready by his family, or maybe they wanted him to find it out on his own. His personality is very different from the other family members, after all. As for Tserriednich, it might have been by influence of another family member that knowledge was kept from him. If Theta discerned that he's not a man who should know Nen, chances are that people closer to him came to the same conclusion.

It's worth remembering that the only record we have of Nen being this huge secret, is from Wing briefly explaining to a kid, Zushi, and then later on, at Gon's "graduation"; he may not have been interested in getting into extensive detail about the nuances of the Hunter Association's stance. It makes no sense at all that Togashi would consider it a huge secret and yet in the very next chapter/episode, brazenly broadcast a fight between people using this same secret system; that would be looking down too much on the same man who developed this amazing system, no? Most likely, he had a solid reason for this, that just didn't clear the pages well. I think the answer lies in the same lazy approach the Association has to everything else: just as they only get roused for "serious" stuff (and even then, just 3 Hunters were sent), they also do the bare minimum to keep Nen a secret, and more importantly, teach only the bare minimum number of people, but aren't bothered if others are determined enough to go learn it themselves. Perhaps even because they've taken your ethical argument into account: to what extent do you really want to go to keep people from using their own life energy, for good or ill? More pragmatically, it's too much trouble to tightly contain this knowledge, especially when there's not even 700 Hunters, of which like 70% ain't shit. Also, while anybody can learn to use Nen, how quickly you pick up Nen depends heavily on potential, and we know the odds of that from Zushi who's apparently a 1-in-100000 talent and yet needed 6 months to learn Ten alone, the safe way. The aggressive method would probably have most people dying from the assault. Bottom line, most people who learn Nen won't amount to much. If they ever become a serious enough threat to order, the Association can actively step in on the govt's request or just send some Bounty Hunters after them (like Binolt and the Troupe have bounties on their heads). Otherwise, let the "free market" handle things, whoever learns and makes a living from their life energy, that's just fine. Whoever dies for Hisoka's next orgasm, just dies.

Togashi just is inconsistent about it though. Not sure if you’re reading the succession war arc or not (so mild spoilers ahead) but the kakin princes and their security teams are all completely unaware of nen and shocked to learn about it. @AMaskHeldBeforeTheSun
@AMaskHeldBeforeTheSun 3 жыл бұрын
@@Spaecefaeries Nope, I haven't gotten very far into the manga sadly, the medium just isn't for me, and Togashi isn't the best artist besides. From the little I read, I only remember vaguely that Kakin is this belligerent country trying to organize an expedition to the Dark Continent. Since I haven't gotten to the part you speak of, I don't know the exact nature of their shock. So it could just be that they were surprised not so much by the word "Nen" itself or its existence, but rather by its efficacy. That it could actually do shit. Much like you'd probably be surprised if someone came up to you, told you they could use reiki and then proceeded to actually demolish a building with it. With no obvious tricks that you can see. Which brings me to the Heaven's Arena part. Do we know for certain that the matches, especially those in the 200s, are broadcast for everyone outside the Tower, not just resident fighters and gamblers? If we do, then is it possible that the Kakin guys, being totalitarian, don't allow external content much like North Korea and East Gorteau? If it isn't, then perhaps they just thought the Nen stuff was some trick, much like we'd think when we see incredible stuff in YT vids. Even wrestling vids are full of fake shit. In the end, it could obviously just be that Togashi really did make a mistake here (it wouldn't be his first) and forgot his own rules but I must've watched this show at least a dozen times and the level of forethought and detail in his/Madhouse's storytelling, explaining stuff even when he doesn't have to and yet doing it with such concision, is awe-inspiring. Which is why if I come across stuff that looks wrong, especially basic stuff like this, I generally check thoroughly that I haven't missed something that easily explains it. He's certainly earned the benefit of the doubt from me at least, well above most other writers. Still, considering how much has been said on this topic, I'd say that if he really made any mistake here, it would be that he (unusually) failed to properly convey/clarify exactly what the clueless masses think about Nen. But not that he actually *forgot* he's been showing off Nen everywhere in public, since the Heaven's Arena arc, never been shy about it even once.

My take on this is sort of middle-ground, and revolves around what it means to be a Hunter and the Isaac Netero philosophy. As you stated in a previous video, being a Hunter is pretty vague, but one of the core concepts is to have a solid motivation to do something. By putting Nen in front of everyone, spectators have two options: first is as OMEGALUL ANDY stated in another comment, having a passive reaction in the style of "oh that's fake or it's a magic trick". The second is to get curious and go out on the quest for powers. The first category does not interest Netero and the Hunter Association, but the second one does, and thankfully if they do their reasearch right that's where these motivated people will end up anyways. Some sort of free advertising for a target audience. Thing is that people can learn Nen without being a Hunter, because as with most things they don't have a monopoly on Hunter, and that's how we end up with Hisokas and Zoldyks or Genthrus. I see this as an inherent risk to that "free ad" scenario, that Netero was more than willing to take given his philosophy as a human being and as president of the Hunter Association. Perhaps it was even him who allowed Nen to be so widely displayed, just for the fun of having stronger opponents and attracting more interesting candidates. This theory brings the debate down to a case-by-case study of every nen user in the series. With that being said, there are still a lot of inconsistencies in the series, notably Kaluto's knowledge of Nen when Kirua, his older brother, had never heard of it, or [3rd prince's name]'s lack of knowledge of Nen while managing a ruthless mafia.

From twitter: Yeah I was wondering if Togashi could retcon it somehow. Maybe thru a character w/ an ability (manipulator affinity; 1st ability: “hypnotic suggestion”) that alters perception so the audience believes they witnessed special effects rather than paranormal activity - think genjutsu from Naruto or Aizen from Bleach (second ability: “subliminal messaging” for TV viewers). Condition: only affects non-nen users. Second condition: perception alterations retroactively removed from memory once nen is awakened. Third condition: Subliminal messaging requires weekly shu application to all broadcasting equipment. Would be cool if the guy with green eyes and long gray hair [I now know this is a cameo appearance of Prince Baka from Togashi’s Level E.] from Heaven’s Arena who interrupted the announcer to explain the different scoring styles of judges (Gon vs Hisoka, episode 36) turned out to be the one with such an ability.

Nen is something everyone can learn but it is not something everyone can master. Most people can play sports, some can play really well. We know if you manage to become a professional athlete your life will change forever. But what is stopping every single person from trying to become a professional athlete? This is the mentality I have with nen, it is similar to ki in dragon ball z. It is fun to watch athletes display their skills but not all of us have the talent, devotion, passion, time or resources to pursue these interests. How is the hunter hunter world any different? A few thoughts on this: 1: Was it confirmed that heavens arena matches, even the top level fights, are publicly broadcast? Could it be something like pay per view where only select people can see? 2: Even if people know of Nen, that doesn’t mean they can easily use it. Most of the main characters are prodigies. Zushi is a prodigy and still it takes him months or years to learn things. For a non-prodigy it could take decades. Kurapika has a good accelerated method of teaching Nen due to his particular abilities. But most of the time the acceleration process involves forcing open one’s nodes which can kill a person. 3: Komugi was a Nen user and didn’t know it. Maybe people call weaker uses of Nen (which is what most people see since most people are not prodigies) something else. Talent, passion, a blessing, a gift, etc. 4: With how greedy the world is, and how special Nen is, I could see people charging extraordinary amounts to teach Nen (outside the hunter organization), which would deter a lot of people, except extremely wealthy people with a lot of time on their hands, such as Greed Island players??? With the extreme cost, low likelihood of quickly learning it, and risk of death associated with acceleration, I could see Nen use being *viewed* as pseudoscience, or a predatory religion that’s practiced by the wealthy. People know of it, but based on what they’ve seen and heard, it costs a lot of money, you’re not likely to gain much if it’s not “destiny” (you’re not a prodigy), and a lot of people who get in too deep die as a result. That said, your point still stands. I don’t think it makes sense for it to be a secret. I do think there’s a means by which people could be actively aware of it and just ignore it. Togashi being wishy washy about it does seem like the easier answer though.

However, as wing stated in the anime, for normal people its hard to learn because they have to open the pores that allow the passage of aura. This process is slow and i don't think many would have the patience to do it. It can be also dangerous without someone guiding them since they could manifest something without control, or even if that isn't the case, wing also stated that the pores in the eye allow people to see nen, so they wouldn't know or see their own powers until much later if these aren't open. Then if they wanted to go the faster route by the method wing used to give aura to gon and Killua, they would need to be very talented to control it without letting it get exausted, since it means death. There would be the need of a teacher or someone that could help if something goes wrong, because not many people would be able to guess on the spot that they need to be calm and concentrate or what kind of shape is given, specially if they didn't have any knowledge about it at all. If the world of HXH is already filled with magical creatures and people that isn't human, that adds to not ask the question of how they are able to wield such abilities. Nen of course has reached the general population, there is bound to be people willing to teach their friends these cool powers, and guide them. The secret is not the power but how to obtain it. Maybe nen wasn't known in the world of HXH and it was recently discovered, or leaked enough to spread. Idk.

Nen, as a power system, reminds me of chi in db/dbz. When it’s first introduced it’s this super rare thing only few can attain by going through unbelievable training. Until we see Gohan teach it to Videl and reveal that anyone can apparently learn it by holding both their hands in front. And yet nobody on earth outside the protagonists and a few antagonists can use it for some reason. It’s just bad world building, although it’s a small thing.

There is actually - in my mind - one way that the nen being a secret makes sense. If the population of the hunterhunter world is MASSIVE then it totally makes sense for there to be SO MANY NEN users just lying around while still the largest population doesn't know or care much about it. Like if there were 30 billion people and only say, 3 billion knew about nen, then that would easily account for the numbers of users we see. As far as heavens arena? Its like wrestling, everyone likes the cool smoke and mirrors, not like they can hear hisoka talking on the battle stage. I mean, killua can but he's a freak. Also : it is totally a plot hole that togashi didn't write around but I'm choosing to headcanon the logic.

The He-ily Family just became Nen users when Morena took over and T barely interacts with them. Makes sense only a few in Kakin know about it because the military wouldn't just disseminate such information. Pretty sure tons of rich people do know about Nen and ask about it. Every wealthy person we've met has been acquainted with a nen-user. Also sure the biggest nations study it just like they study the catastrophes. Think Heaven's arena is like the WWE to most people. All of it stagecraft. When the ants got Nen the only reason things didn't descend into chaos is because Pitou was born and their innate queen loyalty. As soon as the latter died they had to be restrained by the Hunters. Humans would be worse since our DNA is the reason they were like that in the first place. As for GI, I think we viewers forget that learning and mastering Nen is extremely hard. The majority of users are likely ok with just learning Ten and unrefined Ren for nigh invulnerability and slightly above peak human(HxH-verse) strength. The former may even be all they ever know about unless they meet more talented Nen users. Leorio thought he was hot shit only mastering Ten. As for Hisoka. I doubt he'd have been trained by a legit well intentioned Nen master. The kind of people willing to give him hints are the kind of people he met prior to being a Hunter. Pariston was probably the same way or played nice guy early on.

Maybe this question is resolved by looking at the phenomenon in our own world? How would people respond to a martial arts tournament that supposedly housed supernatural powers? My suspicions are that people would probably dismiss it as some kind of trick for the show, but I definitely agree that there are issues. It’d be nice to see an arc where the secret of Nen is tackled head on. There must be other schools of practice, so it would be fun to explore them. It’s such a rich and enticing system, so I think having the intricacies of it challenged in a later narrative would be super interesting!

Another inconsistency was how Killua was able to recognize his grandfather's nen ability during the invasion even though that wouldn't be possible since he learned nen in the time that he was away from his family, therefore if the ability was used before he wouldn't have seen it/recognize it would be his grandfather's

There was a moment in the Hunter Exam arc where Killua was asked "Was that a technique?" and he replied "No, I just ripped his heart out." (paraphrased) Now this might be putting too much stake into a single exchange, especially one that happened before Togashi came up with Nen, but my take away was that the public does have a general idea of nebulous "techniques" and Killua, while in the dark when it comes to how Nen works, was aware that his own heart-ripping technique wasn't one of them. I'd also like to bring up Meteor City. It's often used as the default background for a lot of various non-hunter Nen users to the point where I'm willing to bet that most anonymous Nen users that crop up in the series come from there. It might actually be an open secret in Meteor City, where everyone has some general knowledge of Nen and many people go on to pursue it. Since Meteor City's existence is denied by most of the world, it could make sense if their public knowledge just doesn't cross over into global public knowledge. So, random Greed Island goons? Probably from Meteor City, it's at least a passable handwave. As for why people aren't curious and try to learn this artform? In the world of Hunter x Hunter, those who strive to learn and achieve and test their limits are the exact kind of people who try to become hunters in the first place. Government leaders might be aware of it, but are content in letting their underlings take the risks. Remember, there are only two ways to learn Nen: One is extremely long, involved and requires some mastery of meditation that clearly most people couldn't pull off. The ones who could, like Zushi, end up hand-picked by a hunter and tutored. The second method usually leaves the target mutilated or dead unless they have extremely good instinctive control. I don't imagine many world leaders are willing to toss that coin when they can just hire a bodyguard from Meteor City. Chimera Ants though? They have the perfect blend of individualistic drive and hive mentality to see that risk and say "heck yeah!" Plus they have that extremely good instinctive control so their losses were probably minimal, if any. Now, the idea that all these informal and unstated social structures would all be in place and functioning to keep Nen just as much of a secret as it needs to be for the story is pretty implausible. But it's just possible enough for me to accept that as a head-canon status quo and move on without hurting my brain.

Remember, Nen requires a lot of years of practice and honing. Its not like in case of Killua and Gon or 4th prince where u can master an advanced technique just overnight. Its a very VERY complicated process to develope your nen abilities to an even some sort of visible degree. Some can afford to spent money and time for that, some can not. Case of Killua and Gon and Zushi and 4th prince are extremly rare. Besides without proper guidance nen can just backfired and kill you. Not to mentioned there are no certainity about your Hatsu and its restrictions. So being a thing that only part of the society can do - looks very suitable for that world.

Agree that Nen being a secret is a bit of a stretch, but disagree with the notion that Nen should be thought to everyone. The thing is to start using Nen you have to open your aura nodes first, which is said to be done by years of training and meditation (something the average person probably doesn't have time for or doesn't care to do). The only other method is initiation, which on the surface looks like a great shortcut, but is frowned upon by the Nen population and is said to be very dangerous. Sure both Gon and Killua were introduced to Nen this way, but they are also 1 in 10 million talents. It is not a far stretch that anyone less talented is not suitable for this method of Nen awakening.

Perhaps I think the best way to make something open to the world and at the same time only a few use it is difficulty. I mean making the idea of Nen some daunting task that takes years to learn can skew the amount of people who wish to learn it. It is like martial arts really. I mean it's available to everyone equally. However few people actually seek to master it. People who break away from practice often making a version of their own. But ultimately is based on the original. I was watching Cobra Kai and both forms are Karate. However they are different practices. Thats why the 6 type of nen is not accurate. They just speak to the most likely where people start. Focusing to much on the rules is a disadvantage. I get this from Hisoka. Telling people what his.power does forces expectation. Yet this can work against others in a fight.

In regards to Heaven's Arena: It's possible the public looks at nen the same way they look at Hisoka's "magic" (he is referred to as the Gloom Magician in Heaven's Arena anyways). It's just a thing these high level fighters can do that the layperson doesn't understand. So it's possible that people just don't take it seriously and anytime they hear talk about aura and nen they think it's some stage effect the fighters are using to add showmanship (like irl wrestling does with shows made to entertain the audience). And technically it's wrong to say that you need nen to fight in the 200s floors. That's a general rule since the rest of the competition is using nen and going against nen without your own is dangerous. However it's still possible for a person with a superhuman physiology to fight and strive in the 200s floors, if their raw strength can outspeed and overpower the competition's aura then they'd be able to win fights. Something very reasonable to do against opponents such as Gido. To fight someone on Kastro's level without nen would require strength beyond anything we've witnessed from non-nen users. (Gon was surprisingly close to beating Gido as a 12 year old boy with just the absolute basic introductory use of nen - imagine someone like Netero except they never learned to wield nen, they'd nearly 100% beat Gido)

Superhuman abilities are supposedly pretty common, magical beasts are pretty prevalent the world over in hxh, so I find it pretty easy to assume that this is what draws most people's attention since between the magical beasts and the nen objects and relics the world is aware of, *these* are what get most of the attention. Especially since the Hunter Association, despite not having absolute influence, absolutely can spread the narrative that regular people shouldn't investigate without becoming a Hunter first for their own safety. All three of these points would dramatically reduce the amount of people who naturally figure out what they should actually be prioritizing. I could even see this being deliberate and Togashi just forgot that he didn't tell us / clumsily hasn't gotten there yet that magical beasts are just relatives to nen beasts and were alongside the artifacts made as a distraction as much as an accident of history.

I think the reason for keeping it from the general public is because forced awakenings could mean death and the powers people could develop (assuming they had enough potential to develop anything) could be extremely dangerous since they *choose* the powers that they want and train to be able to use it. And with conditions, people could be putting themselves at risk as well. Of course not everyone would use nen for fighting, but everyone who deliberately learns it, learns it with combat purposes in mind. There are definitely reasons for keeping it hush hush, but it also doesn't look like anyone's actually hiding it from people, they're just selective about who they teach it to.

I think he has missed a few things. In the heaven's arena arc it was stated that people usually force awaken nen in others as an initiation that's why some of the characters in there are severely injured from the start. So yes Nen is a secret, but if you happen to survive an encounter against a Nen user, like happened to the ants, you can use it yourself. Being this a think it is possible that some people aren't interested in Nen, of course governments and the military would and should use it, but normal people, nah don't think so, Nen requires both talent and hardwork. I don't know anyone that couldn't benefit of being able to lift 200 kg, but people have priorities so sometimes the effort of learning Nen weights more than the benefits.

From a comment regarding a plot hole in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: “It is called suspension of disbelief. Suspension of disbelief refers primarily to the willingness of a reader or viewer to accept the premises of a work of fiction, even if they are fantastic or impossible. It also refers to the willingness of the audience to overlook the limitations of a medium, so that these do not interfere with the illusion. However, suspension of disbelief is a quid pro quo: the audience agrees to provisionally suspend their judgment in exchange for the promise of entertainment. Just sit back and enjoy the play. Besides look at the movies we watch each day. Talk about plot holes.” uk.answers.yahoo.com/amp/qna/20070211080936AAQmhYu Not excusing it entirely, it’s not much of a flaw nor is it a strength with regard to Heaven’s Arena at least, it’s just a minimal, somewhat flimsy explanation for the public’s widespread ignorance/unawareness of nen. Most people were able to overlook this to enjoy the show.

I don't know if "suspension of the disbelief" applies to plot holes. Plot holes are just inconsistencies in the narrative, while we're already suspending our disbelief by engaging in Gon's adventures. otherwise, its like us to suspend our disbelief even more just to ignore a flaw in the narrative.

Considering Nen is naturally invisible and you have magicians like Hisoka with his “magic”, the audience see these unique abilties as just that: these strong fighters are so strong with powers we can never have. Also, Heaven’s arena never directly reveals what NEn is and how to obtain it

@@aceclover758 - well, I think that is sufficient explanation for most but I propose this ability to further strengthen the credibility of nen’s relative secrecy. Otherwise one can think “how is no one questioning how Hisoka is flinging people and stones around by just pointing at objects? And why is no one in the audience concerned with investigating this?” Questions of that sort. The fact that a billion people (according to the manga) travel there annually begs for further explanation.

@@aceclover758 - additionally I think stronger nen users tend to have better things to do than go to Heaven’s Arena (excepting lustkillers like Hisoka and whoever he drags in there). Most fighters in HA likely lack the resolve to be great or they wouldn’t be satiated by the prizes offered thus the most incredible abilities are rarely if ever seen there.

@@christopherrivera1673 Most Hunters focus their Nen or creat Hatsu’s that revolve around their career or goals. While all Hunters know basic martial arts and how to defend themselves, not all of their abilities are combat types. So its not like hunters lack resolve, it’s just many do not fight or choose not to. Nen or being a hunter is not about fighting all the time or revolving your life around it. Also, billions of people watch magic shows IRL every year and other sporting events where unique people do the impossible. Doesnt mean many want to do it. Also, you are comparing their standards to ours. HxH has talking and sentient beats in their world, we do not. Certain “fantasy” stuff wont be questioned or investigated like our real world. You’re in a world that: Has a boy that can push 16 tons without Nen His family can turn their hands into nails as sharp as knives, also without Nen Jonnas the MAss Murdeder was able to literally rip people apart with his barehands and at such speeds, normal humans would not even notice he has injured them. And this is without Nen Magical Beasts Giant creatures that are man eaters or can become as large as a multi story building Yet, you think people would “question” a magician like Hisoka and his “magic”? Just like in the real world, a magician is doing things YOU yourself would think cannot copy or is only unique to him: he was born with it, you were not.

I believe that the general society don't see the "weird phenomena" they witness in Heaven's Arena as something that they or anyone could learn at some extent. Keeping in mind that even the candidates to the hunter exam are already outstanding individuals in general, and the ones who get to the right location are even more outstanding, so there's already a huge gap there where most people are just like "meh I'm not suited for that". So they are probably, at some level, aware of the "super powers" that certified hunters, or even powerful fighters in the case of Heaven's Arena, wield but don't go much further than that for the same reason they don't even apply to the hunter's exam. Of course, there must be some individuals who see those kind of stuff and take an interest to learn what is that all about, but either they can't find anything about it or just can't learn it, and those who do learn it, don't spread the knowledge.
