I have two defenses for the title: 1. They want this game to stand on it's own, so putting League in the title would impede that 2. I think I know why they went with 2XKO, and if I'm correct, kind of experimental. Everyone abbreviates League of Legends to "LoL", my theory, is that they're going ahead of the curve by just making the title an abbreviation. Only problem is it sucks to say since it's a clunky 4 syllables, but I do prefer the name over "League of legends: [subtitle here]". Edit: Looking back on it I realized a bigger problem with this new name: 2XKO is one syllable longer than Project L, so it takes longer, and if it kept the name Project L, I guarantee you people would've shortened it to either "L" or "PL". Overall, dumb name, they should change it. One name I like was "Double K.O." with the acronym being "2KO"
@MenaceLendil9 ай бұрын
The first one doesn't make sense, if they wanted it to "stand on it's own" why use the IP at all, the game already uses the characters. That ship has set sail long ago.
@LOL-gn5oh9 ай бұрын
I think abbreviations should be an organic process created by the community, not something imposed by corpos.

Because that way, having a different name and using the League IP, if people really like the game they can go after the source material on their own, without feeling "forced" to know League beforehand to enjoy the fighting game, the same way some people watched and loved Arcane and then went on to play League of Legends... By having LoL on the name, people would think the game requires prior knowledge to be enjoyed, I wrote a long ass comment on this video explaining that on further detail... but in short, they don't want a new IP, they want to expand the League IP but in a more healthier way, not bringing the prejudice that League suffers because of it's toxic community or the feeling that it's a game only for League players, and not one that everyone can just sit and enjoy (like with Arcane, where a ton of people who didn't even liked League watched the show and loved it).
@kirbles20359 ай бұрын
Big thing I didn't mention is before 2XKO, the devs did another game called rising thunder. They were bought out by Riot, and ever since they've been working on this. Regardless of the LoL license, this is a game they've wanted to make.
@silverdededestruction21978 ай бұрын
The name still sucks, it's not even reaching the dumb names of some games like Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Melty Blood, Under Night, etc. The difference between all these games and 2XKO is that 2XKO is just directly referring to a game mechanic. Guilty Gear, Blazblue, Melty Blood, and Under Night all, even loosely, refer to something relevant to the story of the game. The Guilty Gear is Sol Badguy, the Blazblue refers to the power that Ragna Bloodedge wields, Melty Blood is loosely in reference to how it's a story involving vampires, Under Night refers to the Hollow Night and In-Birth refers specific individuals you can play as in the game. Street Fighter's many locales you combat in take place in the streets of any country. Tekken is the old word for "Iron Fist". Soul Calibur refers to the actual weapon that was meant to combat the Soul Edge. Arcana Heart can be connected to the main protagonist and the fact that they utilize Arcana's. Mortal Kombat. Skullgirls refers to mainly Marie and every woman who wished upon the skullheart. 2XKO is going to have to hamfist something to expllain the 2XKO in a non-mechanics way, and it already shat itself in the ass

It's not a marketable name at all. It doesn't roll off the tongue, it tells you nothing about what the actual game is about (Or that it's even a game, someone who doesn't know, could think it's a new computer mouse or something), and it sounds like the development name. It's like if they called Mortal Kombat, RBBLK (right bumper block)

1:25 there’s this youtuber named Graeldon who is playing every single sfw steam game in alphabetical order, and he hasn’t gotten to 2 yet. So. That’s who they’d be targeting with that. Also ftr League isn’t the first MOBA to do this for whatever reason. Smite has a a 3D Platform Fighter spinoff called Divine Knockout, with no reference to Smite in the title despite the characters clearly being chibi versions of the exact same designs for the gods used in Smite and both being by Hi-Rez

I agree with all your points but I think their goal is to be separate from league of legends and let the game stand on its own. All of their separate league ip games have unrelated names like legends of runeterra and team fight tactics. Still a weird choice and weird name. Great video 👍
@GrayCatbird19 ай бұрын
It seems to me Riot is very deliberately trying to avoid explicit associations between its spinoff projects and LoL. The same can be said of Arcane, it has the league logo but it’s rather secondary. I think the logic is that they’re trying to reach a significantly broader audience than og players, one that knows nothing of League (or even have negative preconceptions about it).
@avgfgcfan9 ай бұрын
my theory for the name of the game is that the higher-ups have a syllable capacity that they need to fulfill for all of League of Legends projects (ie. teamfight tactics) 2xko fits both the syllable count while also somewhat being recognizable as a fighting game title. the problem with it though is that it's a generic title
@shadowmaksim9 ай бұрын
Part of me is wondering if the name is more of an attempt to take advantage of search algorithms or something. Like, by having it start with "2", it's automatically going to be placed near the top of alphabetical search results. Stuff kinda-sorta like that. Though really, this is nothing new weirdly enough. "Hextech Mayhem" and "Conv/rgence" are both "LoL" spin-offs but they don't directly contain the name. Well, they kinda do but more of an off-hand subtitle, "X: A League of Legends Story". Thinking about it, there also was "Arcane" that was treated similarly. So I wouldn't be surprised if the final/full title would be something like "2XKO" followed by a subtitle with "LoL" in it.

Still hype as ever for the game I just have no idea why the official name is a damn acronym. I despise the name 2XKO, but I disagree with your opinion on this video I think that with Riot Forge they noticed a overwhelming majority of players were League players, and they were quite niche, Project L is not supposed to be a small, indie title, they're aiming for something big, hence don't want people not playing it because it has league of legends in the name, they want to bring new people, for the game to stand on it's own and then if the player wants it, it's up to him to go after the source material, it's not like they're hiding it's a League related game either... I mentioned Riot Forge because when recommending "Ruined King - A League Of Legends Story" to my friends (which I think is a pretty amazing game btw), what I heard the most is "it looks fun but I don't know shit about League", searched for people's opinions about the and seen the same comment being repeated online quite a lot, and I guess Riot doesn't want that. It's the same reason why companies sometimes reboot or remake a series instead of making a sequel, very few players that are new to a series are going to play "Somewhat known but not wildly popular game 2" because they're afraid that not having played the first game may impact their story understanding or their experience in general with the game, and not all of them are willing to play the first game because the second one looks amazing, so rebooting it allows for new people to discover the franchise... When NieR Automata released for example, being already in the NieR community for a long time, I've seen countless posts of people asking "I've never played Replicant (first NieR game), is it ok for me to start on Automata?" Arcane is another thing to think about, do you think it would have had the same amount of success had Riot names it "League of Legends: Arcane"? League has its niche but it has a pretty bad reputation for people who have not played it, so most people would have likely skipped it, and like I mentioned before, if you search for it, you'll find quite a lot of people who watched Arcane and wanted to get into League asking for tips on Reddit, Discord, even Facebook groups... They do not hide the fact it's based on League of Legends, but by not sharing it's name, you don't create that sense of being "forced" to know the source material to enjoy it's successor. So in short, they want to expand the League of Legends brand but at the same time they want the shows and the other games to be something different, something that people can enjoy without feeling "forced" to get involved in the MOBA part of League, and I do expect that Project F and that the MMO will also not have "League of Legends" in it's name

It's also awkward to say and doesn't abbreviate into something recognizable. It probably matters a lot more than we'd think, too. I've noticed more and more how important marketing is to a video game's performance, and having something that rolls off the tongue, even if it's a fan-made name like "Mahvel" is super important. Even League itself. People can just say "League" or "LoL" or pronounce it "lawl". Either way it has a flow to it. People are going to associate a clunky name as a clunky game.

My biggest issue with the name is its readability. It's not easy to read or pronounce, and you can't even abbreviate it since it's already an abbreviation. There are some wacky fighting game names out there, but the community is able to shorten it (e.g: Under Night In Birth -> UNI). 2XKO is just a mouthful.

This is Riot's fault for retconning the League of Legends out of the League of Legends lore. Now their biggest brand aspect, the name of what was once the literal most popular game in the world, makes no sense and can't easily be slapped onto spinoffs. Like how all the spinoff league games are just completely new names like Legends of Runterra, Arcane, or Wild Rift. I'M STILL MAD ABOUT THE LEAGUE!
