not all solves are filmed as people usually have to choose to get their solves filmed and have someone film them, also fun fact not only can timers glitch, but the displays can also sometimes be broken so the display time isn't always accurate. In addition, displays aren't officially required in competition, but they are usually there. Another issue is with people who film themselves using a table tripod, which won't guarantee the time to be visible due to angles and stuff.

Review the footage, look at the timer one frame before the timer got hit. Then since it usually records at 60 fps you add 1/60th of a second to get the most accurate time.

If you have a high fps camera you can find the time interval between each frame, and then to get the closest approximation to the real solve time you just have to find the last frame before the timer went to 0 and simulate 1 frame of time. This way, you might end up having added 0.0001 seconds of fake delay to the player, but it's much better than cancelling his attempt completely.

Replays and frame counting are not reasonable to do at competitions they have to work through a lot contestants and rounds within a set amount of time. Having things grind to a halt everytime this happens is not practical. They could easily though allow a redo. They would have to keep spare scrambled cubes around to enable retries, but that should be feasible.

A solution to this is to have all cubes be smart cubes that hook up to an electronical timer so that way no matter what whenever the cube is solved it sets a time and there's no rough hitting on the equipment.

So couple things, this could be easily fixed by either having a charger, a rechargeable battery that can be replaced or adding replaceable padding inside so the batteries are firmly held in place. This problem has an easy fix but it's the negligence and stupidity of the designers plus the stupidity of the competitions in regards to how they handle this situation where you get such things happening. Honestly in a competition you need good equipment not garbage that can easily malfunction and fail at it's most important job.

For something like world championships, where there is also the larger timer next to the competitor, they should be able to video record the timer and do a slo-mo replay to get the time before going to zero. For other competitions, allow for self recording over the shoulder to catch the timer maybe.

In my country the judges use the stopwatch together with the timer in case this happen but last weekend I went to a comp in an other country and the delegate told me to not do this. I feel that's stupid because I don't think there's a rule saying we can't do this.

there is a simple fix for this add some foam to the inside of the batter cover to prevent the batteries from moving during operation or move to a 9v battery as they are mechanically fixed and wont disconnect from being jostled just need a buck converter to lower the battery voltage to 3v

lodge a piece of tissue in between the batter and the cover so that it wouldn’t move, it would be a tight fit but something this simple could help it work. I did this to my psp battery as it was loose and kept dislodging every time I play.

The timer should have a few modifications made, first off, remove the pads and have them wired so that you can't shake the whole thing when stomping it, and add a memory that keeps the last counter logged in case it does... Honestly just better equipment is all you'd need

This is so easy to fix. All you have to do is make the entire top a start/stop and make the buttons on the side and the timer on the other side. This way, you can’t accidentally reset the time. Although this is a good idea, malfunctioning is an entirely different issue
