These "Saint's" make a huge speech on the roof about poor paying jobs, managers, and general "injustices" for their generation. So I feel that It's very much an accurate use of the word. I don't agree that it's disingenuous or ignorant. I actually think the term has taken on a life of its own, and people have many different understandings of the term. This isn't a political stance, the term "woke" is being used to describe the characters and writing. They seem focused on pandering to a specific group or type of younger people. The type that doesn't wear a shirt 24/7 yet has headphones around the neck at all times- spitting out quirky dialogue that's pretty bland and hipster-esk. As someone in the comments said: This whole game feels like the embodiment of "pat yourself on the back" and "participation trophies". What do you guys think?

Watchdogs 2 was great as the characters were interesting and they were "good guys" trying to make the world a better place. I played the game in stealth mode and tried not to kill anyone. It seemed to fit with the main character and his dialogue. The new Saints Row writing is like oil and water. They wanted characters you could like and relate to. So the gang are "good guys" that take toys to the orphanage and complain about worker exploitation. And then they are killing countless "good guy" policemen and women and innocent Marshall security workers. It is totally jarring and stops any kind of realism or immersion into the story. It's not a drama story, not a comedy, not a parody of popular movies, it is just a total bland mess. A 10 year old could write a more interesting, convincing and immersive story.

The weird thing is that, I don't even think it's millennial or gen Z. To quote Yahtzee, they gentrified gangster culture. They turned it into hustle culture but we use guns. Part of the insanity of old Saints is that they are unashamedly gangbangers, even after all is said and done. And speaking of that, I'd prefer that the series ended with SR4. Cos at that point, there was nowhere left to go. Certainly not in terms of stakes. And it felt like a celebration of the series, with shedloads of fanservice, using its premise to do shit that it wouldn't be able to in earlier games. My point is, Saints Row '22 is unnecessary. It feels more like Embracer or THQ Nordic or whoever owns the license saw money on the table and wanted to market the game to people like me (I'm technically Gen Z). Except it failed on all fronts. Like, this is a game I'm gonna see on plenty of Worst Of lists, without any caveats.

Yeah it turns out to be a skin deep lip service of various cultures. That's is kinda the issue with the franchise, being further and further from straight gangster culture into a pop culture melting pot. There is demand for a classic style Saints Row game. It was a good time for a reboot, it just needed good direction and sense of vision. Getting back to the basics with a fleshed out world, open ended story, well written characters and in depth customization. Put virtually any fan of the first three games in charge of determining the vision of SR 2022, and we wouldve almost certainly gotten a better title.

The main problem I have is how much potential it had storywise. There could have been a really compelling story about college age people forced into crime to get by, and deciding to become part time gangsters. They could start out the game as these hipster gen z types, but actually make a point with that. Have something big happen (bigger that crashing Neena’s dumbass car) and have them realize what they’ve really gotten into. Then they drop that shit and become actual Saints.

Especially the southwestern location could've really amped that up with desert shootouts, use Marshall to interfere with drug activities and truly being a militia for hire and have the corruption element there, hell even adding conflicts with gangs and police. They could've added an activity to have crooked cops on the side of the saints a reversed fuzz scenario. The ball was dropped severely because they wanted to pander to people that can't handle some criticism. Look at their community manager they are catering to that type of person and volition is filled with uncreative sheep.

@@karithema9ician657 yeah, they could have done that. study the blocks in chicago and new york and put something out about that. they could have tried to make it more modern that way but instead they tried whatever they're doing now. a bunch of suburban kids from college which absolutely none of them look like they'd even think about, you know... "spinning opp blocks", or "hitting licks", or handle having to "beat a charge" every now and then. it'd probably look a lot like GTA 5 but with everything looking a bit more modern. but it would have been better than whatever this was.

This game is ironically the same thing that Saints Row 2 was being critical of. You had a villain that consisted of a evil corporation that was trying to gentrify Stilwater and this game basically looks like the result of that gentrification process by Ultor

The weapon wheel not slowing down time or stopping gameplay is intentional. This was a feature in Saints Row 1, 2 and The Third. In Saint’s Row 4, older fans didn’t like how the wheel stopped gameplay, so I imagine volition made it not affect gameplay to correct that complaint

I can't even forgive some of the 'buggy' mechanics in this game. When they did happen (rarely) in the previous games such as SR2 / SR3, it was often pretty funny. Make that aspect consistent, along with a brand new floppy story, annoying characters, and irritating writing, and you have a recipe for disaster... 😪

People contribute SR2 as "Lightning in a bottle" but I see it as a two visions working in harmony. The Boss is VERY serious when it comes to building the Saints up as the strongest gang in Stillwater but is able to let his/her hair down to do random acts around the city. So, you get this combination of badass when it comes to business but jokester when it comes to play. The writing really helps with that because the Boss doesn't play around with his/her lieutenants (Carlos, Pierce, Shaundi) while their talking about how to bring other gangs down but will do an odd job with a sense of levity while trying to build their respect.
