@mattlange58906 жыл бұрын
The problem is nobody is educated about headroom. you shouldn't be limiting every single thing and peaking it like he is showing. I like to leave myself 6-7 dB of headroom and keep everything in the green. This way you will never have the problem of not being able to achieve certain dynamics you may want between your snare and kick, pads, and synths for example. All your maximizing and dynamics should be taken more seriously in the mastering stage. The mixing stage is all about being creative and having fun, settling out filters and creating reverbs in the mix.

I finally released some merch after a year of requests!! teespring.com/stores/dylan-tallchief Some extra context to this video below: I made this video as a response to many of the project files I receive during livestreams. A great deal of them still had the default fl limiter on their project, almost always negatively impacting their mixes. Function wise it works the way it's intended. I don't think I claim that limiter itself is broken (besides that weird sidechain thing) but more the sound you get from it is not great (even after tweaking I still preferred the Pro-L). The title can be interpreted many ways: "The problem with the FL Studio Limiter".... is that it's default preset isn't great for mastering. "The problem with the FL Studio Limiter"... is that it's on by default when you install FL so beginners are very often unaware of it and how it affects their mixes. Not everything addressed in the video is an inherent problem of Fruity Limiter. Lots of plugins cause latency, so for any of those plugins, if you have stuff not routed to a mixer track first, they won't get PDC (Plugin Delay Compensation). Comparing the two limiters when release and attacks are different isn't the fairest comparison but the point was more to demonstrate that the default one isn't great settings for mastering and should be tweaked further. It's cool to see the discussion that's come from the video. I probably could have done a better job at explaining and demonstrating my points. Thanks for Auvic for bringing up a lot of these points in his response video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGKcXoaDjMSGm6c

This saved me I always had to go the extra mile trying to mix and edit never understanding why everything didn’t fit together putting instruments in and always wondering why they sound like glue when together but when you listen to a song everything sounds nice and apart and then I figured out forever I was trying to work around fruity fucking limiter that was fucking everything up. It sucks cause u spent days tho mixing on some stuff and working around it and when I removed it, it all sounds like shit but I guess it won’t be the end of the world to go in and edit every mix but it always made me not wanna produce cause I never understood why it always was like stuck and glued together and as kinda a beginner I just thought it was me and left it as that. I always had to lower the volume and make it quieter to sound better and once I found out that this thing was always spawning in like a leach it really helped me. I noticed it before but thought it was just there and never did anything assume when it’s on default it doesn’t change anything so I left it always and I finally realized it’s fucking everything. Make my kicks so muddy and just garbage. I’m not the best mixer I really have no clue what I’m doing but finding that pile of steaming shit is the reason my stuff sounds so glued and stuck together it makes sense. It was limiting everything and brick walling it essentially so everything was forced to fight over each other instead of be free and work in layers so the lead and kick were always fighting and same with everything else. Every instrument I added the more glued it sounded and I always had to fight to work around it to solve that and I never really did till now.

8:30 actually this was so annoying for me because in my personal template, I had the kick on insert 11 and all the synths on 1-10 meaning I had to adjust the sidechain whenever I routed a new synth track to sidechain Channel. Seriously, other Plugins manage to change this for you, why not one of the 3 stock plugins I use :thinking:

Stock FL compressors and maximized have a “master” preset you can try in place of default limiter
@RandomRelapse6 жыл бұрын
I've been producing on FL for the last 11 years, and honestly the default limiter with the +6db boost helps me immensely with the mix, it makes everything sound like ass if things too loud in peak volume, then when everything is done I take out the limiter and I know I have a solid 6db of headroom to polish and master with. Sure u could use another limiter, but this uses barely any CPU and is usually already loaded up :)
@JoyfulWAVE Жыл бұрын
Right... most people dont get the thing with the limiter. I do it like you say...i produce into the limiter and switch it off at the end before rendering my mixdown which goes into a master project anyway. But the limiter on the master bus gives me some pre-master that i can work with. I start with the kick at about -12 db...then bass and the other stuff...i always land at about -6 db without the limiter at the end...plenty headroom for mastering. 👍👍👍

Fruity limiter is goated, u can use it as a clipper, saturator, compressor and as a limiter aswell. Ik its not the best limiter ever but its so useful, the deafult preset is just a terrible representation of how it can actually work. That being said, I wouldnt use it as a compressor/limiter on buses or the master (u can still use it as a clipper/saturator there) for those cases I prefer waves api 2500 and camel phat.

I use fruity peak controller to sidechain kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5nSf5-Ehadqaac, jump to 4:04 in this vid. For my limiting I turn all the envelopes down in Fruity Limiter, boost the gain, then adjust the ceiling if I want an sort of clipping on the track.
@MatekGala6 жыл бұрын
I dont think thats the best approach. Because when you change the volume manually, you can make it full quite and still hear some effects for eg reveerb on there. Hard to explain, but that is why some people use fruity balance to make a mixer track go abrupt full quite when it needs to (through automation).
@balls2616 жыл бұрын
You can still use Fruity Limiter to sidechain. Just make sure the ceiling on the limiter tab is high (or the input isn't going past 0 db in the first place). Dylan even explained this in the video.
@BassBoostingBrony6 жыл бұрын
2TheWindoBeats DONT sidechain in the mixer with this technique, bibd it to a fruity balancer for example or an compressor, but not on the mixer rack!
@feggyo6 жыл бұрын
Jurgen there is nothing bad in setting ceil to 0db. This is a feature, not bug, that u can use FLimiter as limiter and compressor two in one.Increasing ceilings means that you only use the compression part of this plugin. Fruity Limiter is practically compressor too.
@musicbyjackstar26 жыл бұрын
I usually have a sidechain ghost to prevent that issue at the end, it won't change if it's always at the very left (Or any place where you like putting your sidechain ghost). Plus it gives you more control because you can have the ghost trigger sidechaining when the kick isn't playing maybe at a buildup or something.
@danielsmith56266 жыл бұрын
the attack on fruity limiter also uses look-ahead processing so turning the attack knob to 0 should at least bring back the transients
@blastwatch43116 жыл бұрын
If you turn it to 0 then you'll have no lookahead, which won't bring the transient back (it's still limiting the peaks, but exactly when they hit, not like a little before, so you don't win any transients) but you also distort the peaks a lot (as it was in the clip with the kick). So, a better approach to the attack would be to lower it until it starts distorting and then pull it a little back in the safe zone. But lowering the attack might require leaving a lower ceiling because the inter-sample peaks (when converting to analog signal, e.g. aplifiers) at the peak are going to peak higher over 0. And Fruity Limiter doesn't have a true-peak limiting built in.

@florianhacker87386 жыл бұрын
For the issue of ordering your sidechain inputs and accidentally rearange them. I usually handled it like this: left most mixer track is my SIDECHAIN track. This track will not play audio to the master track, it will be silenced and just for sidechain purposes. Then i route every signal that should control the sidechaining to this track. So all the kicks, maybe the snares and so on will be routet to this SIDECHAIN track. (Since this track will not play through master, they are still routed to the master itself, as i said this track will just be used for sidechaining your song). Then lets say i have a bass group that should get sidechained by all the kicks and snares. This track has a Fruity Limiter on it. Since i combined all the kicks and snares into one single SIDECHAIN track i can now sidechain this Bass group by the SIDECHAIN track. Notice how this SIDECHAIN track is the left most track all the time. Now you can rearrange all your mixer tracks without effecting the order of them for sidechaining (since you have only one track which controls sidechaining, which is always the left most track)
@cubasbeatproducer23744 жыл бұрын
I agree FL limiter is definitely not the route to go get your track to sound loud and proud a little touch of the limiter at the end of the chain won't hurt but it basically won't do any good neither it'll only get you maybe a DB or two of perceived loudness before it start pumping it doesn't even squash your song in a good way it'll just make it pump in a bad way other limiters out there can do a lot better than that
