How else are you supposed to climb as support? Do you genuinely think a silver/gold support player can climb by not doing dmg/making plays and only healbotting? Don't forget that the ppl in your games are the same skill lvl as you, so you need to be consistently doing smth to make your team win, that means adopting an active playstyle focused on dmg, flanks etc., regardless of the role being played.

I half agree, but you can also just pick a more self-sufficient dps character in games with supports like that (e.g. soldier, tracer, sombra). *Most* supports I would say are normal players who focus on healing, so you shouldn't be in games where you're forced to swap that often. That's one thing I agree with awkward on tbh. You're not gonna improve by blaming your (potentially) shitty supports. The game is also just less enjoyable with that mindset. Taking control of what you can and swapping to a different hero generally leads to a more fun game than one where you're dying all the time because your character isn't self-sufficient and your supports aren't healing you.

Thank you for speaking on this. I’m a dogshit silver player, so I know these unranked to gm copiers all too well. I mostly play support and tank, and it annoys me when I’m support and have to pick up the slack of the other support. Especially since Illari came out. Had a game last night as tank, our mercy was pocketing the ash and junkrat, and Illari was just trying to out dps the dps. When I told her she needs to use her healing beam on me, she told me to go back to her pylon for healing. But her pylon was always all the way back where the dps were. She would never move it cuz she’s hyper fixated on doing damage like the gm players

There’s also a common theme in the OW community that good Mercys are supposed to pocket a DPS only and that you’re bad if you heal the tank or heal too much cuz her healing sucks and is a waste of time. Yet I see all top 500 mercys healing their teams and the devs said in a recent post that Mercy outputs the same healing as Lifeweaver. So she clearly is a good healer.

Awkward is really problematic because of his insane mechanical skill and then telling gold players literally all they need to do is DPSing as healers and they’re all set and I think this is BS because we all know for certain that people like Awkward are the reason why nobody likes Smurfs at all they ruin the fun for everybody in the same lobby while you trying your best. And alone that Overwatch has such a big issue with Smurfs and that one-tricking is just so prevalent, it just sucks all the fun out if Overwatch.

The moria player ARXUK actually has a good R2GM in his guide, in it he tries to show a more passive playstyle with moria (using orbs from a distance to harrass the support) instead of an aggresive one u see on most GM morias where they flank the backline. When the passivity doesnt work, he just loses with the team cause he knows most new players dont have the game sense or mechanics to be playing her at a high level. Honestly one of the best players in OW, and one of the most educational gaming channels ive watched, teaches tactics that go beyond the game.

Awkward makes pretty clear that not everybody can hit his shots, and everyone's performance won't look like his. But I actually found myself climbing, getting out of Plat and reaching Masters 5 for the first time in my life, trying to apply some of the tips he gave. Is not right or wrong, is watching him (and others) and try to grab some tips that you might not know, and apply it to your gameplay. but above all, be self aware of what you are capable of. I rarely do this crazy flanks he does because I can't, but I try to put on consistent damage for example.

This "support not healer" mentality used to screws me over when playing support, because sometimes I felt like I should be doing more damage, and while i was trying to hit a target my teammates kept dying when I wasn't paying attention, and when they wouldn't die because I was focusing on *gasp* supporting them I somehow felt dogshit at characters like bap, ana, kiriko and Illari because everyone kept saying you have to do damage when playing these characters. The "support, not heal" mentality does a lot more harm to new support players because it makes them focus on the wrong thing beforr mastering the fundamentals of their role, our primary role is enabling and healing because NO ONE ELSE CAN DO THIS, and IF we have time he throw a couple shots at the enemy, we finish of a weak target, we make someone give uo a flank by doing some damage to them, but if we don't heal we will just lose

I think Awkwards teaching are really good, he makes fundamentals of a good t500 play digestible and easy to learn. It’s his lack of clarity to the mechanical skill gap between him and anyone who watches his u2gm. His defensiveness toward his mechanical skill is what produces these seeming throwing gold players. Of course his trying to stop people from downplaying his advice, but he does it in such a shitty misleading way. Everything just gets uninformative when he starts defending himself from the aim allegations. Smurfing has killed this game and u2gm in general are unfortunate phenomena. At the end of the day, the game is not designed for you to rank up solo queue. Sorry but you need to stack if you want to go on win streaks consistently Unless you are a signed OWL god. Don't expect to climb solo unless you're Defran or Awkward with 10k hours played and play the game for a living, it's that simple. It's EXTREMELY hard to solo carry past Diamond. Make some like-minded tryhard friends and do it the easy way if you care about your rank. This is not my opinion, this is how Blizzard believes it should work

I feel one of the core issues Awkward's videos (and R2GMs as a whole) is that the language used often misleads people; a great example of this would be "Mechanics". Most players, especially those in lower elo brackets, will hear this and believe it means the ability to put their crosshair over the enemy and press mouse1, I believe Awkward would fall under this as well given his sensitivity video attempting to dispel the mechanics argument(this might be a reach). However, mechanics is an entire package that includes, but isn't limited to: mouse control, movement, positioning and within those alone you have numerous sub-categories. As an example, in order to even get into an off-angle like he often suggests he must: understand what a good off-angle is at that given moment in any match (positioning), navigate to that angle in a relatively efficient way to reduce downtime (movement/positioning) and then set himself up to be able to play off/with his teammates(positioning/movement). This is before we even get into shooting people... The point is, you can't turn these off and to pretend that in a genre that is inherently all decided by mechanics, and to think that anyone at

I remember once in Akward's chat (while he was doing the bronze handicap on twitch) I asked if anybody actually watches these videos for educational purposes, and not just for "pub stomping-ish" purposes. The ammount of silver and bronze players who were hell bent on these videos being like a sacred text or something was crazy. I watched the rest of the stream.... Fair to say that there was hardly anything educational, just a "look I am winning in bronze with a handicap" thing going on. Like you said, most of the things he can explain to an audience, doesn't actually matter to the people of the ranks he plays in, and videos like that get used as a source of copeium. I recently stopped playing overwatch, last Saturday was the final straw. My issue with overwatch is the rank system. I have never had issues with ranked systems in games and they have never been the main motivation for me to leave. But overwatch was different. I feel like I can’t climb because I’m just unlucky. That’s it. I don’t blame it on skill. first game I got in a que with a horrible tank that kept overextending without his team. (Tank that doesn’t ply with team, it’s a team game btw). Next 2 games, my teammates left. After the first round (we did bad). And then you might say: “you’re just bad, there is no such thing as elo hell. I am deeply convinced there is. There is also 0 counterpicking or communicating in vc in all my ranked matches. Overall my overwatch experience has been horrible, they have lost another player. Good job overwatch.

I don't think unranked to GM videos are that bad. One of the Awkward's arguments why he plays in low elo lobbies was the pacing of the game. It is much slower in lower ranks and easier to talk and play at the same time and actually show and explain your decisions, positioning, etc. Games in top 500 are far too different from metal ranks
