Id like to see a sequel, but without Fleischer at the helm. Honestly, I think Tom can be a solid Nate if the direction and script give him a character to really work with. Sophia Ali is great as Chloe, and I think the chemistry can be present (again, if the script gives the actors something to work with). Hell, i think Mark could even make a decent Sully; lord knows any characterization of the character was left out of the script from the get-go, so its not like Wahlberg could've played anyone but himself. If the sequel gets a completely different creative team and director, I think the sequel could be 10 steps in the right direction. It may not be perfect, but it has the potential to become something great, and literally follow in the footsteps of "Sic Pavis Magna"

Movie directors do not understand the pacing or reasons for emphasis of video game plot. It's just something to be improved into movie plot from their understanding. Just like how some books get heavily disrespected by their on screen counterpart. Simply a director's lack of respect for anything not their preferred form of media.
@arkamfate93712 жыл бұрын
@@TyandOnGoing it's not about recognizing them as an art form. Because art is subjective really. Then there's a thing called irrefutable fact versus opinion. Irrefutable facts or to be honest facts that are supported by evidence that cannot be refuted unless you're just some kind of argumentative prick. Then you have irrefutable opinion; which goes off of a very popular if not predominant opinion on certain things. Like say what you will about Titanic as a film. It's an airfutable fact that it was one of the highest grossest movies of all time. An irrefutable opinion happens to be it was a generally well done and well made film.
@arkamfate93712 жыл бұрын
@@donaldpetersen2382 it has nothing to do with lack of respect for a person's preferred media so much as it is a basic and irrefutable fact. Not everyone plays video games, not everybody reads. The real reason why you can never truly adapt a particular book into a decent film it's simple not everyone has read the book ergo not everyone is going to be as familiar with the origin of the story. Just like how not everyone is familiar with comic books so your average comic book gatekeeping nerd will of course have tons of knowledge and information about the comic book origin source compared to the average person that does not read comic books. Not everyone plays video games at least to the extent to where they want a fascinating in-depth and riveting story. Let's not kid ourselves here, not everyone that plays a video game plays it for the same reason. Some of us play for the thrill and the enjoyment of simple violent fun, like the folks that play fighting games or first person shooters. Some of us enjoy a really good in-depth story and character arc. And there are some that are perfectly content with playing angry birds. now that does not mean that you can't enjoy the same media we just all enjoyed to a different extent. Film is something that can be genuinely and generally received by anyone. Whether if you're familiar with the source material or not. And there are more people that watch films then read books or play video games food for thought.

If you’re adapting a massively beloved game series, you should, at the very least, be able to identify WHAT people like about it. Uncharted isn’t as popular as it is because it has groundbreaking gameplay. I can’t even say it’s because of the intricate set pieces and cliche story beats. No, Uncharted is popular because of the likability of Nathan Drake and his chemistry with Sully. The film couldn’t even get those two essential things right.

This movie became tedious soooo quickly. Everything just kept boiling down to everyone constantly quadruple crossing each other, backstabbing each other, one upping each other, "sorry, but I've learned to not trust people" each other, every fucking other scene. Not to mention that they just all constantly keep stumbling into each other - like, it's the most well kept secret in human history or some shit, and you need to have these super mysterious macguffins, following this super secret treasure map, doing all this super mysterious adventure shit, and it's always just 1 guy going through the trouble of figuring everything out with 10 other people just constantly knowing EXACTLY what that one guy is up to at every single given moment. This movie was National Treasure. But worse. And like 20 years too late. With way less likeable characters. And just about 0 action. And the most boring and stupid mysteries and adventure. But alas, don't mind me hiding a 200 y/o key hole inside a Papa John's with a steam vent directly connecting my $5 billion treasure to a night club.

In defense of the constant backstabbing... majority of the time it made sense logically and realistically wise considering the amount of money one can potentially get is a HUGE amount like what Sully said in the movie: "5-6 Billion" also most of the backstabbing and betrayal makes sense logically, to the character plotwise in the movie. Chloe Frazer stated that Sully had betrayed her once just for the money so makes sense why she would backstab Sully and Nathan when they first met. Later on, its revealed that she was working with Santiago Moncada the whole time which I admit was kinda shoehorn and asspull as there wasn't any setup unless you count her backstabbing Sully and Nathan when they met. Santiago betrayed and killed his dad because his dad wanted to give the treasure away to anyone who can find it other than the family because of guilt from the bloodshed of his ancestors, an ok reasoning. Like what Santiago said, even giving away the treasure doesn't erase the past bloodshed so in his reasoning he's like "might as well just keep the treasure" Braddock betraying Santiago was mainly out of petty revenge and Santiago undermining her skills by secretly hiring Chloe behind her back. Also, Sully states she is a free agent that just chose to work under the Moncada family in hopes of getting the gold without much hard work put in. Also the main point of what the movie was trying to convey was trust. It made sense that almost everybody other than Nathan was backstabbing each other to drive the point of how important trust was. With Chloe, it was kind of a cautionary tale to Nathan that he could end up alone just like her if he closed off everyone and distrusted everyone just from a shitty experience. With Sully, his past actions thought Nathan to not backstab or betray people for the money as people will find a way to fuck you over in the future. Santiago was doing whatever it took just to get the treasure even if it hurt the people he was working with and that got him killed. Braddock is in a similar situation to Chloe where she closed people off and teaches Nathan that you shouldn't forsake your morals just for money as it will only bring you to the same level as the main villain Santiago.

The "let it go" scene in Last Crusade works so well because you know Sean Connery's been after the grail for decades and decades before Indiana even thought of it, at the expense of spending any real time with his son. So when Sean Connery tells him that he has it already, without risking his life, it completes the story perfectly.

Though league is a VERY different game, and the lore isn't exactly front and center, the episodic act structure that still feels like a cinematic movie experience is kind of how video game movies should go if they want to fairly adapt the game structure into cinema. Having a scene in a Papa Johns didn't bother me. It pointed out how much the world had changed since the sailors hid their treasure. The amazing fresco on the wall was no longer in a church or wherever it was when the map was hidden. Now it's a cheap fast food place. Or a night club. What bothered me more was the scene at the end where the ships, suspended from helicopters were whipping around through the air. I can give a certain license to psychics in an adventure film, like the part at the beginning where Drake climbs up the cargo boxes back into the airplane. But those 500 year old wooden sailing ships would have been reduced to splinters when they tried to put the nets around them, never mind lifting them and flying away with them. It shattered my suspension of disbelief. I'm completely unfamiliar with the video games so the deviation from the source material didn't bother me. I just wanted a fantastic adventure movie with fast action and daring do. But the action felt rushed and the character scenes felt drawn out. I left the theater feeling unsatisfied.

The plane scene and the helicopter scene was absolutely amazing to watch and I really do like Tom Holland he's really charming... But he's no Nathan Drake. For me, watching as how they try to combine Uncharted 3 and 4 into a movie but then make him younger? It just really holds itself back

I'm sick of people telling me they had "fun with it" and its just "entertainment." Nathan Drake and Sully are some of the most iconic game characters of our era. What makes Uncharted work is the personalities and world that Amy Henning created--the wit and relationships--you care about Drake and his friends. That's what set it apart from just another action-adventure game. The guy who says, "hey man what's going on?I'm Marky-Mark" as Sully and just a random bankable actor you call when you want a teenager just doesn't feel like they respected the characters. When I disconnected it from Uncharted I enjoyed it. I don't know maybe its because Uncharted were the games that elevated games from things to play, to a medium that could tell great stories for me. Drake is 30 in the games and there are so many actors in their 30s who would have loved the role and Sully should always be played by Bruce Campbell to me. Someone said he's too old--he's the exact age. lol I just don't get when we have The Last Of Us with HBO coming and tons of other game-based tv shows to come--we get this. It was a cash-in by the numbers treasure hunt movie. The cast did what it could--but Drake and the world of Uncharted deserve more care.

I dont mind Holland as Drake (still should be Fillion imo) and I thought his chemistry with Walberg was also...alright. I just can't picture Sully looking like Mark (prequel or not) Edit: I will say, whatever her face/character was, she did not need to be in it. On top of that, the games themselves were really well written (as you said) and that being a video game, we get direct interaction instead of just watching. This sounded good on paper, but wasn't needed

I've played Uncharted since I was 11 years old alongside all of my family members. What we loved most about the games was the quick witted humor and the dynamics between Sully and Drake. I think the problem with this movie is that anyone that wants to see those characters, won't see them until at least another movie is made. Because this is their first meeting, they don't have the dynamic that makes Uncharted so lovable. I think the movie is good for anyone that hasn't played the games, but that is also exactly the problem. I can understand partly the casting of Tom Holland, but it brings more negatives than positives. He plays YOUNG Nathan Drake, someone we don't really see much of in the games. His immaturity and non-experience of going on adventures makes it understandable why there wasn't much action in the movies. But Uncharted fans don't want that. We want to see the aweful shit Drake has to put up with, only to laugh it off when he nearly escapes death for the nth time. We didn't get all of this because this was the start of it all. I don't think it's a BAD movie, I think it's fine. As an Uncharted fan I am certainly dissapointed in the simple plot and the bad villains (they were very bland in my opinion, especially the lackies that followed Jo around. I guess an argument can be made that it's like that in the games, but it just wasn't translated well onto the screen). I think it has an alright setup for a sequel, because we could see the 'Drake's Fortune' shirt in the post credit scene being worn by Tom Holland. If they make a sequel, I hope they realise that through that timeskip, Drake and Sully have the same relationship they do in the games and that they really make that the most important thing. That, and Drake actually shooting people in the heads with no mercy. :)

You made a point about Nathan Drake’s character being a good guy in this movie. To me that’s yet another example of Hollywood sterilizing everything. Nate has been betrayed before. In the opening of the second game, his partner traps him in a museum and he spends a while imprisoned in Panama. He then hunts his former partner down and kills him. The people that made Uncharted 2022 clearly don’t understand Uncharted
@GuardsmanBass2 жыл бұрын
It was . . .fine. Main thing I took from it all was that doing a good action-adventure movie is REALLY hard. Indiana Jones movies, "Mummy" 1999, "National Treasure" - they all seem a lot more impressive now. The stuff with Chloe ended up kind of weird. It was funny when they had the whole "rule of three" pay-off (she betrayed him first by stealing the cross key, then by robbing him of the map) result in her getting handed wrong coordinates, but then she basically plays no other role in the film after that except a tiny joke near the end. It felt like unsatisfying pay-off after they kept building up on-screen chemistry between her and Drake. The weird thing about Wahlberg's Sully and Drake is that it felt like they cut some scenes out near the beginning. Like he's just a bar-tender who occasionally pick-pockets from customers, and next thing Sully's asking him to be the trigger man on the auction heist.

With that in mind, I'm even more mad now that another good videogame story in film was ruined in translation. Hell, something like the Nathan Fillon one could have gotten greenlit instead and would have done better - the passion and faithfullness from the ones behind that little film really nailed it!!

I was fine with Holland, a little on the small side but that can be overlooked easily enough. What I didn't get was whalberg, did not fit the role AT ALL. Not a knock on his acting, its just the same Whalberg character in every movie as it was in this one. Overall the movie didn't feel like uncharted, it was a standalone buddy action movie but did not feel like uncharted. It may have been better to have already established their characters and dropped them in the middle of an adventure that is after all the games, since 90% of us already know the story to that point, lets just have a new adventure. I would like to see another one, but recast Sully please.

Treasure Planet spends time investing in the father/son relationship that develops between Silver and Jim, to the point that you genuinely feel the emotions behind the decision of long desired wealth vs saving the young man he’s grown attached to. Silver has acted against Jim with the mutiny so he’s more of a wild card in a do we trust him or not way (helped by this relationship being an addition the movie makes so we don’t have the source material to help us guess) whereas Sully is always an ally to Nate so we know which way he’ll swing.

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie more than I was expecting I would, especially since I hold the games in very high regard. It certainly has it's problems, but I think it's a decent starting point if they end up making more of them. I think Tom did a solid job as Nate, though he could've used a bit more of an edge (he didn't even come close to being the mass murderer that Nate is in the games). He has room to improve and for what they were going for, I don't think he was a bad choice. But on the other hand, Mark was not a good choice for Sully. Like at all. The closest thing he got to Sully was the inflection in some of his lines. And even then, he never even said "Goddamn," and he's supposed to be Victor "Goddamn" Sullivan! He wasn't horrendous or anything, but it's not encouraging. Other than that, the action was mostly pretty fun, Chloe was alright, the Nolan North cameo was fun, and Antonio Banderas was exactly what I'd expect from an Uncharted villain. Also, since it was focused on so much in the video, the Pizza Hut scene. It didn't really bother me, because the idea of these ancient puzzle pieces just being adapted into modern architecture without anyone realizing it is a fun idea. If it was just a generic pizza place, it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but I guess acknowledging real life brands is a deal breaker, for whatever reason. In the end, I'd be interested to see where they go from here if they do continue. The end credits scene hints at them adapting the first game, which would lead to an interesting tone shift due to plot developments. It'd just be strange that Uncharted 1 would end up being Uncharted 2 film wise.

I haven't even seen it but visually how they are portrayed and who they are as actors make it almost impossible to forget. If someone else in the role really makes a significant impact on a future version of the film, then maybe this movie will be forgotten. Each new reboot of a film can have that effect on older films sometimes unless it is worse than the original or boring. Some films can also fall into their own separate flavors; they're not bad or good just different.

Felt more like a Halloween walkthrough attraction while they had a conversation you could have on a sidewalk. There were no spiders or really any sense of danger in this spider web cave, it felt unadventurous. Same goes for that flying dart trap preceding it, the camera shots are so basic and the stakes feel so low that it's hard to get invested in any of it.

I watched Uncharted, I really liked it, never played the game. But I agree with a lot of the cons that were said. It's a shame to see that the script was basic. It seems like the screenwriter of this script never immersed themselves in the Uncharted story itself. It seems that this script was not written as an Uncharted story but more like a standard adventure story. It seems like the script was written with someone without the experience of writing treasure hunting stories, or they were writing the script for the sake of the check. Makes me wonder who in the studio approved of the script, if they wanted to start a successful franchise that critics and fans would like. Since you said that the Uncharted games are written well, I wonder why Sony didn't hire the writers of the games since they know the source material intimately and they would of done it justice. Maybe the screenwriter was miscast.

Personally, my biggest peeve with the film is completely changing Sully and Nate's / Nate and Sam's dynamics. My biggest investment in the games was in Nate and his relationships rather than any adventure, and it just felt like they stripped that away without reinventing it or anything. Plus, on a more petty level, I hated almost all the casting in this film and felt like they wanted recognisable names to bring people by casting a lot of popular netflix actors (I love Tati but her character just feels like a discount Nadine.)
