Yeah it's crazy how often the big guy has no idea what he's talking about. He's clueless about Nintendo in general and clueless about the state of hardware at the moment. Austin having to explain that for the last 5 minutes was hard to watch.

I love my Legion Go. The only issues for me were Lenovo's pride getting in the way of GPU drivers. Now that they gave in, no more issues. Bigger screen, better resolution, faster refresh, and detachable controllers are everything I wanted. Keep up the praise for the Legion GO Matt!!

I support Austin in this case. The fact that they are cranking the z2 go chip to 20-40 W TDP is insane considering that there aren't that many performances you are getting while you are going to have a worse battery life. AMD have shown us that they can custom their chip well enough for low TDP level and I don't understand why this was not done for Z2go and Z2 (mid to low tier). This is a difficult balance to achieve indeed, but I felt it was in the wrong direction now that we are hitting 40 W TDP with this Zen 3 processor on an handheld. It is a 680 M integrated graphics, come on.

My current dream handheld standard is a Z2 processor running steam OS, TDP from 15 - 35 W. The battery size should be 60-72Whr. Screen is a 7 inch 1200P that support VRR but it can also cap at 90FPS for better battery life. Hall effect joy stick with analog trigger.

I almost got a legion go. Took the plunge for Christmas on a smoked steam deck and it’s amazing. I’m new to Linux but I love it. It’s not as complicated as you’d think. You don’t have the dang one drive pop ups and issues. The bios is clean. The plug in are great. I can’t say enough great things about the steam deck. I was expecting it to be heavier however I find it quite light. It’s been the solution for gaming I’ve spent years looking for.

I have always thought that MS could go either direction with handhelds. If they do end up going the direction of making a version of windows 11 specific towards a handheld where they get with there hardware partners and release them that they would make a surface handheld and not an Xbox. There are really only two ways that I could see that happening. Personally, what I think you could see if MS doesn't want to make traditional consoles anymore than why not make a gaming focused form of windows that you could run on any device giving you an experience similar to an Xbox but the it still being a full windows pc. I could actually see it getting to the point where the surface and Xbox teams are merged with the Xbox surface. With it instead being a console having it be a prebuilt gaming tower in the form factor of a series x for around the same price which I think would be an interesting proposition and would fit with what seems to be MS approach seems to be going towards. It would also still allow them to making gaming hardware that could compete with a PlayStation, while offering more options to consumers and providing users with more use cases for the hardware. I think that's a big reason why things like the switch and steam deck have been so successful because for the price they offer a lot of practical use cases.

Exactly, they make money on the store, not the device. 100% why other devices are getting SteamOS, Valve is working on a new VR Headset I believe with SteamOS installed according to datamines. The Deck 2 is a ways out so it makes sense to sell it from 3rd party's and undercut the cost of the Windows License. Depends right now how badly you want to play COD right now on the go until Valve and Anti-Cheat devs can figure out how to get Kernal-Level Anti-Cheat working at least on SteamOS. Most handhelds that can play COD or Valorant anyway are WAY more expensive then any of the SteamOS handhelds and I think Austin and Matt really overlooked this. It's comparing sub $399 systems to ones almost $900!!

I don't have much in great expectations of Microsoft "fixing Windows on the handheld". Why? MS spend years and years seemingly sitting on their arse with many current issues with Windows. MS need to do more than just a big picture mode. They need a lot of additional things running in the background like a comparable to Gamescope to make the handheld gaming experience as a "it just works" sort of thing.

*SEGA* I believe Nintendo is better than Sega in both hardware and software but I think Sega caters more to my taste. If you have children, I can understand preferring Nintendo over Sega. Nintendo appeals to the widest audience possible. But Sega really speaks to me who doesn’t have kids. They cater to the hardcore gamers. Look at all these Sega games I’m going to play on my Steam Deck these next few months…. Shenmue Shenmue II Shenmue III (I beat it twice but will plat it) Yakuza: Like a Dragon Sonic Superstars Sonic X Shadow Generations I love that Sega style. They also have this underdog mentality since the Saturn/Dreamcast days I also really love. I miss prime Sega very much. I hope they reboot Shinobi III for us if they’re planning to do the same for their other classic titles like Jet Grind Radio and Golden Axe. Planning to buy a Sega shirt on AliExpress. Sega rocks! Perhaps becoming my all-favorite game developer surpassing Square, Namco, Sony, Nintendo, and Capcom. Sega hits the right nerve for me. They still have that Japanese quirkiness of Nintendo but then Sega doesn’t care if their characters in Yakuza drop f bombs. I own the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP/Vita and Switch. Sega can remake so many titles in their deep stable from Alex Kidd, Kid Chameleon, Vectorman, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, Ecco the Dolphin, and Comix Zone. Then their arcade racing games like OutRun, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, and Scud Race. Sega’s good games shouldn’t be known for only Sonic. Sega and Nintendo are like mom and pop stores. They’re purer game developers than Sony and Microsoft who are more like those big corporations trying to swallow up all the mom and pop stores. Sony really doesn’t develop their own games. They rely on better relationships than Nintendo when it comes to third-party support. Sony then buys studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica and then brands them under their Sony Entertainment umbrella. Sega is probably even more purer than Nintendo in video games. Nintendo didn’t start off as a gaming company. They started with playing cards back in the 1800s and attempted other industries including toy maker prior to Game and Watch and Donkey Kong. Sega next to Namco created this arcade game in the 1960s called Periscope. Service Games is even more OG in gaming than Nintendo is. When Nintendo focused on making games for their home consoles, they let Sega and Namco battle it out in the arcades during the 80s and 90s. Namco winning it in the 80s thanks to a classic like Pac-Man while Sega winning it in the 90s as Namco ended up copying everything Sega did. Sega did copy Namco’s Pole Position. Namco copied Sega with similar looking arcade games in the 90s…. *Sega* *vs.* *Namco* Virtua Racing / Daytona USA - Ridge Racer Virtua Fighter - Tekken Virtua Cop / House of the Dead - Time Crisis My only complaint about Sega is they can do a little too much that they lose focus. They tried doing too much by supporting Genesis, Game Gear, Sega-CD, 32X, Saturn, and Nomad, and look where it got them? Gamers were lost and confused. One of my only complaints about Yakuza: Like a Dragon is too many unnecessary sub-plots similar to FF7 Remake. Feels padded and then I will lose focus on the main story because I ended up playing for hours doing other minor stuff. Sega doesn’t know how to keep it short and simple like Nintendo does. With all that said, I do miss the old Sega. The 90s Sega was probably the most innovative game developer in hardware and software of all-time. Beyond what Nintendo did by having four controller ports, Rumble Pak, and an analog stick. Love it or hate it, Shenmue is a very revolutionary game. If Sega ever came out with another handheld, I would buy it a heartbeat. I miss owning Sega hardware. A cooler brand than Nintendo and a better game developer than Sony and Microsoft. SEGA! *Legion* *Go* *S* With the Switch 2 going to be announced in 2 days, it got me thinking about the Steam Deck 2? Then I saw the Legion Go S which will have SteamOS and a Z1 Extreme option, that’s already the Steam Deck 2 to me! Lenovo finally made a Steam Deck 2 to stay on par to the ROG Ally X and Legion Go. This would put a SteamOS handheld closer to a base PS5 in teraflops. Then add more efficiency from SteamOS compared to Windows 11 which I read is at least 20% more efficient. I only wish Lenovo added some touchpads as I find the right one extremely useful when trying to emulate Wii games. But this to me looks like the Steam Deck 2 only manufactured and branded by Lenovo. It looks to me like Valve is becoming more like Microsoft / Google in which they will license or give away their OS for free. It makes sense as they’re more a software / service company than a hardware company. Pixel phones might be from Google but Samsung remains the most popular OEM when it comes to Android. *Switch* *2* I predict Red Dead Redemption 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake will be launch day titles for the Switch 2 and the unit will be priced at $399. You can get the first ROG Ally with Z1 Extreme for $100 more at Best Buy right now. I believe the Switch 2 will have about 1.4 to 1.8 teraflops in the same range as the Xbox One, Steam Deck, and base PlayStation 4. The Z1 Extreme is at 8.6, higher than the PS4 Pro. The Nintendo fanboys will go crazy for that next [insert your favorite Nintendo IP here]. That next Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Smash Bros., Pokémon, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, whatever…. Then the haters will say how the Switch 2 looks like a bigger Switch OLED. How Nintendo is just rehashing the same old shit again similar to smartphone makers like Samsung and Apple making the latest phones look redundant. If you’re going to play FF7 *Rebirth,* it’s likely not going to play well on a Deck or Switch 2. You may need a handheld like the Legion Go S with SteamOS to achieve this. Sell your Ally X to get that $599 Legion Go S with SteamOS and Z1E. The announcements from CES are making the handheld market crowded. Reminds me of the 5th Gen when the 3DO, Jaguar, and Amiga CD32 came out in 1993, years before Saturn, PS1, and N64 did. There’s tons of different options to play games. It’s not 2017 anymore. Nintendo does excel in that one area that no other game developer does. Nintendo makes simple and addictive gameplay. They don’t bombard you with complicated controls and stories. Ever since the first Super Mario game back in 1985, they mastered how to give young gamers that dopamine kick. There are sounds from a slot machine every time Mario or Luigi gets coins. That’s a dopamine kick in your head when you hear sounds like that. Similar to a gambler playing the slots. There’s a sense of accomplishment that you keep yearning for. And Super Mario games are generally easy to pick up and play. You never want a game to be too hard that it pisses a *casual* gamer off. Nintendo wants to appeal to young gamers because they’re planting those “nostalgic” seeds in their heads. See, while Sega is more niche and more for the hardcores, Nintendo tries to capture as many demographics as possible especially younger gamers because they know 30-35 years later, people like JD Coffee will talk about Nintendo with a sense of wonder and nostalgia. “Nintendo raised me, la-di-da.”

Anyone that actually knows Valve knows that Valve doesn't do mass market. They do the things they want in a capacity that allows them to see it through. They then get bored and leave it up to the community to continue. Their end goal isn't to be the leader for handhelds. They just want you to use their OS on them. Hardware is hard and not profitable unless you're doing mass market. Valve makes far more from Steam, and that is what they will continue to innovate. Steam will, one day a PC and console like platform. Steam Deck really helped them realize this direction. I'm a console gamer but am really intrigued now at the prospect of having an ecosystem that works everywhere that allows you to game as complex or as easy as you want to.

As far as I know, all of Valves first party hardware is still supported by them, and their older games, while not getting as many updates anymore, still get compatibility improvements so they run well on newer hardware. Also, a lot of what Valve does isn't exactly niesh. Maybe not global market sensations, but if you've been invested into gaming for any extended period of time, and Valve dose something, everyone hears about it.

Yes the Steam Deck is efficient but so can the Legion Go as well. The Legion Go, with disabling some cores which don't help 90 percent of gaming and speeds up gpu, and lowing RAM speed to the same of Steam Deck and you get the same efficiency of the Steam Deck. I just like that I have the option to tone down my Legion Go if that's what's needed when away from an outlet. Lowering screen to 1200p, 1050p, and even 900p or 800p, also adds to efficiency on top of the previous stated changes. That's why I chose the Legion. Options. Detachable controllers included. Options. That's also why I have a 2280 nvme adapter and an 8tb nvme drive for everything that may be needed on my Legion Go. The other great coming option is that the new Legion Go 2 controllers will be backwards compatible with Legion Go and will be able to be purchased for the original. Options.

Bazzite has quietly dropped a new beta for the "Deck Version" for those using a Nvidia GTX 16XX & RTX cards (or better) using Nvidia's new open source drivers. Still buggy as heck, but hey once they get the bugs worked out then any newer machine can run it regardless of GPU (well mostly). Nvidia will not release a open source driver for cards below the Turing series GPUs. Most likely to prevent people from hanging on to their old cards.

If you want the best console experience on a handheld, the Steam Deck for under $399 or the upcoming Lenovo Go S SteamOS edition for $499 is it. If you NEED to play COD on the go and have money to burn you can get something like an Ally X for $900 and deal with Windows, OneDrive popups, and turning of a page worth of telemetry on a Handheld to reduce the bloat. Even if Windows made a launcher before launching Windows, your probably going to need a Microsoft account to use it and they 100% will sell you data like they just got your soul for free, and is just more bloat imo...

So I'd say Windows 7 was the last good OS from MS, and Win 10 in 2015 was the last straw for me to make the full Linux switch, and it's been an overall good experience using AMD, and Intel hardware.

Windows 11 with bloatware along with the telemetry and recall is the problem with windows 11 and windows 11 is not windows xp and windows 7 which were the best version of windows. After windows 7, it became bloatware buffet and windows turned into something that windows was not known for. I wish that windows xp and windows 7 was still supported that way I can dual boot windows xp and windows 7 and split the storage capacity with half windows xp and the other half with windows 7 with modern hardware. I wish that the steam deck supported msi after burner since I use after burner for overclocking the cpu and gpu to the highest clock speeds along with adjusting the frequency when using the unlocked multiplier.

Games not being locked exclusively to a single console is better for the consumer in every way. Exclusive titles really piss me off. Dont they want money from as many people as possible? Why lock out everyone who doesn't have that specific console minus hardware restrictions on older systems? I'm sure there's so much more nuance to it than that but man... the money these companies could make by giving more access to more people is insane.

Exclusives drive sales. You want God of War, you gotta buy a playstation. Consoles are sold at a loss, so they have to make up for that with software sales. You can say exclusives aren't good but then you are gonna be paying the same price for a single use console as you do a whole PC, o if you are Sony, you are gonna make exclusives and still charge PC prices.

Imo. Microsoft already has a handheld in the lab. Game Pass is native on Stem. Microsoft is still a Computer Manufacturer similar to Lenovo. A Partnership with Value to me is the most lucrative move. Microsoft Gaming will downsize even further, outsourcing services to Value on the Software side, while still making money for Windows from Traditional Computers. Now, instead of making Consoles, Microsoft Gaming is making PC Handhelds and Gaming Computers.

Microsoft is public, they will have telemetry up everyone's nose, they need to know every little thing that's happening on an Xbox handheld. The overhead will be atrocious. How do you think Microsoft is going to make money from something like a handheld, they will make it software-based so OEM's like Asus can adopt it - nothing dedicated in terms of an "XBOX Handheld" that is a brand new product line - not going to happen. Valve is a private company, they can make their money back through steam game sales - as has been repeated so much. Valve and Gabe can take A LOT more risks, so long as the bottom line is covered: Does the end-user return back to steam to play games they buy on the service? Microsoft/Xbox is not in even a remotely close position to have something genuinely competitive - if its first-party - like Asus providing the spec based on what Xbox/Microsoft specifically need. There's noincentive that will have an ROI that will be enough in the short term AND long term.

Austin... You are insane to think handheld tech has plateaued when it has just started on it's second gen.... The issue is battery life and cost effectiveness, and the answer is most definitely not less power... Handheld PCs can't take the Switch Lite approach because Switch games run at 30fps or lower, meanwhile PC games are often very demanding and come in all shapes and sizes.
@arcadeportal32
@arcadeportal32 7 сағат бұрын
I think what Austin was trying to say unlike the other handhelds the Steam Deck with Linux can sip all the way to 8 Watts of power and that can be perfectly fine for some Indy games and give you MASSIVE battery life increases 5+ hours instead of using say 20watts with the same performance while only running for 2hrs on the same battery. 100% though if your playing a bigger game you will need more watts. This is why valve as you can see is trying to go for the affordability market. If you want to play COD on the go your probably going to want that $900 ROG Ally X with the latest chips and cooling. Your not getting good native COD Warzone on a sub $399 handheld anyway. Even Lenovo's handheld with both SteamOS and Windows versions are on the lowest tier spec wise...
@damolin77
@damolin77 9 сағат бұрын
Valve make money from games and having there OS on other handhelds means more money. If it was me and I was Valve I would say to these companies you want drivers you must have someone we can work with on drivers for your gaming handhelds Than Valve wouldn't have to hire that many new people.

You were questioning the future of imitations of handheld gaming you mean. None of those steam handheld players is actually a handheld by the definition of traditional handhelds. They are ALL just portable streaming and preset boxes that try to IMITATE a handheld. Its BECAUSE they rely upon steam and BECAUSE there is so many different hardware configurations that it will fail just as "steam machines" did and will again (if they ever make another real go at it). Steam has become too successful at the home pc gaming market to allow for this to work. There's literally too many games, no base standard, and its guaranteed that not all or even a majority will adapt to being played on all of those standards. Its GAURNTEED that some games will not work or just crash or have who knows what happen for various issues and flaws. CONSOLES work BECAUSE they only have a few limited sets of hardware to work on which is determined when you install or at least put the game into the console and boot it up. Because of this its almost a 100% guarantee that ANY game for the console WILL work. and the FACT that you aren't realistically going to have a wifi connection or at least not a good one on the go is another reason WHY its not actually a handheld, despite holding it in your hands. There is literally more to it than that. Nintendo almost owns a monopoly over actual handhelds (if they went by the actual definition of handhelds as a type of console then they actually would have a monopoly). These boxes that try to imitate that cause confusion to those who don't understand the differences. The thing is with switch is its not ONLY a handheld, its a console, THUS it is NOT a monopoly as well (because it has ps5 and xbox series x to compete against) Reality is with those fake imitation handhelds is that they will either fail outright and sooner or later it'll be just one or 2 or a few left over that are supported. Playstation portal is also NOT a true held, just a remote streaming box you hold in your hands. Microsoft is probably either looking to duplicate the playstation portal since they KNOW they don't manage IPs well enough to hold their own as a console much less with a TRUE handheld device. Sony has pretty much given up and is just desperately looking for another means to make money from suckers. They PROVED that with the PS Vita. And the FACT that they're just copying microsoft's old playbook more or less. Unless Sony is going to get serious like in the PSP days they won't have a actual handheld. And Microsoft would have to do the same and commit resources to proper exclusives (not the call it a exclusive that is actually a "timed exclusive" (which is just saying multiplatform later) And you're wrong Austin, its NOT to play on the go, its to play in your own home while someone else uses the gaming PC., That's if you weren't smart enough to have kept the older gaming pc(s) or to AVOID allowing the gaming pc to be used for other non gaming tasks. Streaming over your own wifi or LAN is on paper a good idea but how and what would the user using the gaming pc see? Would they be watching a game? Would it be draining the resources of it and making it run slow on other tasks? Or would something else it could be doing cause lag and problems for the receiving device? WHO in chat streams their own games on their LAN? What happens when the gaming PC is doing 4k rendering and asked to play a high end modern game it can barely handle by itself? What does the person who is at the gaming pc and using it see? What if its large file transfers of video or a large virus scan? Or any other numerous resource intensive things. Is the performance on another device that is streaming run badly? Who tries to stream on the go from a laptop or "gaming handheld (the fake kind)" with their cell phone connection? I bet you its not good even if the gaming pc isn't doing anything (at least not without you paying a arm and a leg on the cell phone isp connection) Switch 2 if its basically just a stronger version of the switch (as similar as a 3DS is to a DS more or less0 will be a HUGE success simply because that's where the REAL exclusives and games and a ACTUAL handheld experience will be had. Fact of the matter is on top of all of that is that power and size don't matter when you can't really use it.

I'd say somewhere around 98-99%. From my personal experience there has not been a single game from my 360+ game library that I have not gotten to work, and out of those 360 games around 150 are from other storefronts (Prime, Epic, and GOG). As far as I know the only games that will absolutely not work are a handful of multiplayer games due to an issue with anti-cheat - Destiny 2, Fornite and Valorant.
@arcadeportal32
@arcadeportal32 8 сағат бұрын
With SteamOS or Linux, basically anything outside Kernal-Level Anti-cheat games. The Steam Deck compatible ratings on Steam are also not the greatest or up to date. Plenty of games like Batman Arkham Origins says Unsupported, but work just fine on the Steam Deck, just graphically struggles from the Decks hardware, not the OS. 100% better to go to some other websites to look up compatibility.

Madden has so much DRM, Microtransactions, and Anti-Virus level Anti-Cheat! I would not expect that game on anything but Windows. Steam Deck and compatibles will be under $399 in areas!

You can, but you're playing with fire as Windows can sometimes break Grub bootloaders when it decides to update if the install is on the same drive, so the only way to do it is have a system with at least 2 SSD's, and then choose which drive to up from at start. then have 2 more seperate drives for data/games where once is formatted in EXT4 for Linux, and the other NTFS for Windows that way if your boot drive/s get borked you don't lose all your data. I say just pick one, and stick with, but STEAMOS, and most other Linux distros with STEAM installed will run most games if you have the hardware grunt using Proton if they don't have stupid Windows only anti-cheat software.
