Programmer here. The ton of if-else statements really only slows down development (which wouldn't get any faster even if he changed the if-else's to switch statements, the code needs to be completely rewritten to make it maintainable), it doesn't affect the game's performance much at all -- the improvement (in regards to execution time) from moving from if-else statements to switch statements is negligible. Alex's real issue (with the code, at least) is that the scripts are too tightly coupled (basically you can't change one thing without having to change a thousand others -- hence so many bugs from seemingly insignificant or even unrelated changes) and the code is unmaintainable (it's just badly written, not because it runs bad, but because reading it and modifying it takes too much effort). Fixing the issue isn't simple, he'd need to either figure out how to integrate some sort of a strangler pattern (modifying the old code while being able to change it one block at a time), or if that fails -- stop adding anything new and rewrite the game almost from scratch. Whether or not his game would be better off if he shut down development for a while is a different issue that I don't know the answer to, though.

The main issue with his conditionals is that there are tons of them in his update function. That means tons of checks are being performed every frame. So yes, the conditionals do have a significant impact on performance.

@@Returnality You're right in that shoving a lot of time-consuming calculations into the Update method would significantly affect the performance. Even if it was a relatively cheap operation (like a GetComponent call) -- it would add up. However, according to various benchmarks, the difference between if-else chains and a switch case is negligible. If you run a test where you perform 1,000,000 tests for both an if-else chain and a switch statement, the difference is likely going to be under 2-3 milliseconds. For the sake of this example, let's exclude the several cases where a switch case and an if-else statement perform absolutely the same (due to the compiler grinding it down to the same type of operation under the hood) and some cases where a switch statement can even be slower than an if-statement. A game running on 60 FPS spits out a frame approximately every 1000ms/60 = 16.6 milliseconds. If 1,000,000 if-else chains(!) were run in the Update frame every second -- the game would throw up a frame every 16.6 + 3 = 19.6ms. Thus, the FPS would drop to 51 FPS. That's if the game's update loop alone ran 1,000,000 if-else chains and we assume the worst case for each one of them (many values to test against, all of them are integers, the inputs are equally distributed rather than being biased towards certain values). If we take into account all the other cases, the frames dropped would be even less. I'd say Alex's if-else chains are around 20-30 lines on average, so even if his update loop was comprised solely of if-else chains -- the update loop would need to be at least 1,000,000 * 25 = 25,000,000 lines long. For reference, Windows 10, according to some sources, contains around 50 million lines of code (assume under 100 million since that's almost certain).

the sex license thing is creepy af. But i do understand the reason its stated, most anime games have that disclaimer. But in those games its never directly stated what type of school it is (if the characters go to a school) Think its a way for the devs to make the games have a specific rating. Or to avoid certain types of discussion about the game. Like, killing children is usually seen as worse than adults, so saying they are 18 years or older is a way to protect oneself from critisism or allegation about promoting violence against children. When it comes to certain fanart of the characters then... idk, its a touchy subject and goes way into the grey area of the law.

Let's just throw this out there: Those students aren't 18+ In Japan there are three years of high school instead of four. Senpai is in year three, while Yandere-chan is in year one. If Senpai was in year three, he'd be 17-18. If Yandere-Chan was in year one, she'd be 14-15. Not to mention Senpai is the term you call upperclassmen. So if Yandere-chan was 17 as he once said, she wouldn't be calling him Senpai, she'd call him Taro (Senpai's actual name). Another thing, the uniforms they're wearing are actually uniforms worn in middle school. If you want a somewhat accurate representation of high school uniforms from an anime, look at the ones in My Hero Academia or Kaguya Sama: Love is War. Or just look up "Japanese High School uniform" and it'll look much different. All this shit clearly points to them *not* being 18+

This game also butchered the word “Senpai” The word is use when talking to a upper classmate. In the game every just calls Taro senpai not even as Taro senpai. It’s kind of annoying that Alex portrayed that way. I have to admit that I used this word with my old friends in the wrong way and now looking back at it, it’s completely embarrassing. The Japanese langue is so beautiful and for it to be downgraded like this is disappointing. Maybe I’m just looking to deep into this.

This situation annoys me because I didn't actually care about Yanderedev, besides what I depicted of him through people's drawing depictions of him and updates on the game. I left the game for YEARS with full hopes that it would be released, but came back with more update news on the first rival, and everything is the same. He has literally done nothing but flounder for years and while he's at it, being rude behind the scenes and depicting critics as spiteful trolls. Then Love Letter arrived, and threatened to off himself in a last ditch attempt to try and bait DrApeis into shutting down development on Love Letter by giving him as much grief as possible, because he knows their development is way faster and more efficient, and the hatred just grows further and further for yanderedev. He dug himself an inescapable hole, and then people revealed his past and it was all over after that. He refuses to actually have any good developers help him with his game, because apparently it's not in his vision. You shouldn't of got rid of Tiny build or refused help, they would've helped him improve and grow but instead chooses to basically seal his fate for his game. I mean come on, he's so insecure about his own code that he banned 48,000 different accounts because he's so pathetic. His own mods are trying to save his own reputation. Even the person that made Love Letter tried to help de-escalate the suicide bait situation by saying he supports Love Letter. But as usual his own self destructive behaviour got the best of him, floundering for years and live streaming instead of actually working on your video game or at least hiring more people. He could afford it. Yes, it's at the cost of it being *slightly* less accurate to your original vision, but at least it would be coming out this century. Ugh, in the end I hate all of this drama. I just want a video game. But if there's one thing I know for sure, it's not coming from him. (Excuse the fact that this entire comment was not in order, it's just a vent comment)

I went to college for game development. The first mistake that Alex made is not doing pre production! He's wasting time on creating stuff that isn't even in the game anymore.
