But too bad Sotsu's sucks ass, and the conflict is resolved in just like, half an episode.. that means 13 eps of Sotsu is just a boring recap and a waste of budgets.
@KrazyVideoChick2 жыл бұрын
So glad you mentioned Satoko doing all that just because she wasn't smart enough to be at St. Lucia. This chick literally TORTURED Rika in the worst possible way. After that episode, I wanted Satoko to die soooooooo bad with that sword. But even more, I wanted Rika to kill her while in a loop, so that Sotako would spend eternity never being able to catch "looping Rika" and always being thrown into a completely different fragment. That would have been proper justice.

So let me get this straight: the entire reason Rika had to experience all of that, was because her BeSt FRieNd had problems studying and was scared she would leave her? Just based on the fact that she hangs out with some new people?!
@oculism51583 жыл бұрын
Satoko’s reasoning is a bit more complex than that. Tl;dr by the time she began planning to make rika suffer she was already a witch and could only derive happiness from the pain and suffering of others. She just rationalized it as that in her twisted up brain instead of admitting that she had a sick infatuation for Rika that was rooted into her witch personality and could not do anything else. Hell you could see that she was never actually attacking Rika at first. She was only killing herself and the few times that Rika died she just happened to be caught in the crossfire. Only once we see the witch eyes for the first time does she begin to start wanting to make Rika suffer. Yeah Satoko’s reasoning at first was a bit off but she wasn’t going out of her way to make Rika suffer or anything and her drive was more justifiable, Rika never remembered the loops and it just basically became erased. However once she became a witch she was completely irredeemable. The writers just decided that instead of conveying that witch Satoko was completely void of sanity or logical reasoning they’d have her and Rika argue over who fucked over who more.

I feel like it was because Satoko was so hyper focused on he singular goal of making Rika stay with her that she couldn't see the most simple of answers which was A) as you just said use her looping abilities to pass(which would have been 'boring' to Eua) or B) simply use her looping powers to talk to rika (which would have also been boring to Eua) You cant forget that all of this is Eua's doing and that if Eua had wanted it, none of this would have happened. Eua allowed Satoko to continue her looping strictly out of sheer boredom, and it's worth noting that when Hanyu performed her miracle, satoko and rika came to an agreement of separating.

I think the part I dislike the most is how Satoko seems to get away with every horrible act she does and gets forgiven in the end without even having to reflect on her actions or say that she's sorry for having treated everyone like disposable NPCs in a game. "Oh, I didn't get the ending I wanted_ guess I'll just reload and do it all over. It's not like anyone will remember." As was mentioned in the video, the amount of suffering Satoko has to endure (I wouldn't even call it suffering, since it comes from her own childish dislike of studying) is not even a drop in the ocean when compared to the suffering Rika goes through. Setting it up to play out as if they are equal is a blight on the series. Luckily, there's a manga being released that picks up where the flashback of St.Lucia begins, called Jyun (or Meguri?). It's supposed to be a canon replacement for Sotsu, so I still have my hopes up of that leading to something better.
@user-tr9rw7ne8x3 жыл бұрын
Imo I think it really isn't childish and that she's valid to feel the way she did. What Rika went through doesn't invalidate those feelings. (Satoko never wanted to go in the first place & the only reason she went was for Rika, the work load is probably harder than normally considering the type of school and the fact that there were entrance exams to get in to begin with. Although the series is still at fault for calling their suffering equal and fucked up the ending really badly.

It certainly kept me watching to find out what would happen next but Satako causing all that pain and suffering to everyone was just wrong. And all because she didn't want Rika to leave her. Obviously Rika being stuck in loops that always ended in tragedy was the reason she wanted to go to high school far away from Hinamizawa and Satako made it a thousand times worse for her. Some best friend, but that being said I was shocked when the sequel actually made it to 1984, then 87-88 for their teen years because Rika was always stuck in June 1983 to try and set things right again.

I could write a long comment but I'll just say I was nodding along to plenty of this -- I'm also glad somebody else felt the same way about "you" playing at the end of the last episode. I saw a lot of people saying that was one of the few things they were able to enjoy but it felt like such a slap in the face to me. I think SotsuGou's canon status is an interesting conundrum -- seeing as Ryukishi seems to have had little to no involvement in the shows' actual writing, it kind of places them in the same grey zone as a lot of previous content written by other people, including the alternate ending to the visual novel included in the console versions of the game written by Kanou Kiichi. It's generally understood that these arcs carry less "canon" weight than those written by Ryukishi, but it's unlikely this perception will be extended to SotsuGou, not only because many will be unaware of Ryukishi's lack of direct involvement, but because of their status as sequels. They're the Ryukishi-approved "truth" as to how this story continues and thus can't easily be disregarded, yet perhaps would've been markedly different if they'd been written by him. And then there's even the possible new ending being posited by the manga adaptation. The whole discussion as to what's "canon" within the context of a series like Higurashi is a fascinating one and I don't tend to take a binary view, but honestly, I don't blame people for wanting to treat SotsuGou as non-canon and there is a case to be made for that. Just one random tangent. I guess I wrote a long comment after all!

But Higurashi is NOT the place for that kind of high-octane wizard duel setup. Honestly if the brawl was replaced with something that focused more on the mindgames of the looping than brutality and spectacle of it, AND if it had appropriate setup to hold it up, it could have been interesting. That sliver of the blade being a central Mcguffin for a final confrontation with both girls vying for it and their motivations changing as they became more desperate and worn down by the loops is a much more compelling concept, and the fact it's a missed opportunity now is so frustrating.

But then you have genuine superpowers at the end. Guys, we know, they're basically Bern and Lambda, you don't need to adapt their fight too. It was a shame because the fight scene was actually pretty interesting with the 'warps' that hides the amount of deaths they went through. It almost reminds me of a Nolan movie, it's cool. But actual DBZ superpower is just a step too far. And I skipped most of Sotsu after watching the second episode halfway. There are some new parts which is cool like Rina also doing a lowkey mini-Teppei arc, but I wanted more of Satoko vs Rika because we have a good idea already of how Satoko did it considering how she uses her certainty power for game of chances and opening locked briefcase. A shame. Still, the dynamic is interesting for me, as I could get where Satoko is coming from considering how callous Rika would often be, and how hard Eua is egging on her. I wanted more of that, man. Sotsu should have followed Umineko's structure of forgoing the mystery for tbe emotions.

I can rationalize Satoko's actions as her just being a shitty character and/or a shitty person but my bigger issue with her in this sequel is her asspull powers. In Rikka's case she's the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama and with Hanyu's help she can do very limited things, mostly reset time by some amount outside of her control while retaining most of her memories. Still pretty strong but she's a little girl up against a small army and a huge conspiracy so it's acceptable. Then her witch personality formed by her living through over 100 years of death and tragedy. Meanwhile Satoko is a normal human who was mad for stupid reasons, she walked into a shrine and *poof* here you go. Powers even stronger than Rikka's that she can abuse because we need a plot. Also here's the same 100 years of experience in a 10 second montage just for fun. Like how fucking stupid is this? Also 1 single fuck up would supposedly be game over for Satoko yet things just always conveniently go her way to make sure it never happens. Like successfully buying the gun even though she's a child and the person could easily beat her up/kill her and steal her money. Or never getting captured by the Yamainu while sneaking around the clinic. Takano giving up her plan so Satoko never has to actually deal with that obstacle. etc. etc. Then they added the split personality to absolve Satoko's character of all guilt to whatever fans she does have. The split personality leaves at the end which is why Satoko can be forgiven for all the shit she did. Another lazy, boring move. I haven't even gotten into her personality and motives here but yea, Satoko is easily the worst thing about this sequel. Sad too since I kinda didn't mind the new visual style and was pretty exited for more Higurashi. If there's one good thing that came out of it, it's that watching Gou made me actually want to play the visual novel after being anime only for 10+ years and rewatching the series several times. Needless to say I was not disappointed since the anime cut out quite a bit and changed parts around to make the story fit. Also I got the console arcs which are "more Higurashi" except actually good. You get scenarios like Rena, Keiichi and Shion teaming up together to kill Satoko's uncle. Or a remake of the final arc where Keiichi teams up with Rikka to deal with all the girls' problems before taking on Takano instead of that other stuff conveniently working out this time. Honestly couldn't recommend the games more especially to anyone who's already a fan of the series.

Granted, I agree the first 12 episodes were a **pain** to get through, but the last 3 episodes were something I really enjoyed. I agree with most of your points and criticisms and in my opinion, Sotsu should've been 6 episodes. With a proper, well-paced conclusion; rather than trying to fit everything in the last 3 episodes and cal it a day, also removing the answer arcs entirely as they felt really redundant once you know who the perpetrator is, maybe a couple episodes showing how she planned it all.

Gou was a 9/10 Build up and Sotsu was a 4/10 follow up. I love Gou and I will forever love it for getting me into the franchise, but due to the way Sotsu went, I'll have to put it into the realm of non-canon spin off. Especially since Ryukishi07 wasn't even that heavily involved to begin with. I will die on the Hill that the first Sotsu Arc was amazing (just for Renas VA and that Junkyard Scene alone), but it's length also was a bad omen for the shows overall pacing. Gou wasn't really good either, not only because it relied on what was going to come in sotsu, but because the execution was as poor as was sotsu's. Gou reuses a lot of animation as padding (i.e. Rika's ritual dance); from episode 2 it's clear that it's a sequel, yet the events are told once again from Keichii's point of view instead of Rika's (making one wonder what the fuck was she doing while the series was happening); Satoko's transition from victim to villain doesn't make sense as it has many holes; Eua is set as a untrustworthy character, yet she really isn't, as all she says is true. It also felt like sotsu in the way that I felt bored in the first half of the series, as is a recap of the original, just with a few new scenes, it was only tolerable because of the new animation and because what would come could be new and interesting, but it wasn't. Seems like the creator had a general idea, but didn't develop it.

@@vyx_the_grole Honestly, even then it doesn't feel natural at all. It feels more like Ryukishi07 was persuaded to come up with something old-new, so the franchise could be on artificial life-support for a few more years. I guess, that is how franchises go today. They aren't allowed to die and become immortal classics. They have to be kept alive until they ultimately fizzle out into oblivion, since at some point there won't be anything you can add to a franchise without breaking it. It's like Higurashi is going out like Rika would have if she didn't break the loop. Your thoughts about this sequel is similar to what I think about it. I always wanted to see a new Higurashi story about what happened to Rika's happy ending and I was so happy that the 2020 Higurashi turned out to be a sequel. I was surprised when Satoko turned out to be the new villain and we got to see the backstory about what happened between the two of them and I had high hopes that the conclusion would be so satisfying. But when Sotsu turned out to be mostly just recaps of Gou but in Satoko's perspective and lackluster ending, it was so disappointing. But the manga version of Sotsu called Meguri which just came out seems promising at the moment and it is said that it will have a different answer arc from Sotsu. I just hope that it's not a huge disappointment like Sotsu.

The main problem is that they used the same old formula from the original and it is impossible to get better than the original. Like the main characters becoming grown up detectives solving cases with other groups of characters.

My issues with SOTSU are almsot the exact of yours. Like at first I was also going "are they gonna have time when they finally catch up" but in hindsight, not there was never any need for a whole nother arc after where Gou left off, everything is explored it's now just time to throw down. The over top fight was fun and it worked. I did want want to see the answer arcs for Gou, but simply don't like what they focused on. Rena's arc was just what I already got in the original, and doing the amount of time spent on on a FOURTH rendition of the child abuse are really grated on me. Finally getting an Arc from Mion's POV was I kind of always wanted, but it got only 3 episodes when it deserved as much time as Shion's got. And then the truly totally new scenarios get no elaboration at all. Yes we went in knowing it's Satoko druggin people, but you can still make interesting stories out of the details of how.

They should've stopped Gou earlier, maybe up until Satoko's gun point. It might've made many fans angry at that time but hey, at least the continuation is confirmed anyways. The timing would've been good, or even better if Satoko's lucia depression is shown later and we see Satoko's evil first. I just felt like revealing Satoko is too early, and made fans lose interest quickly by Sotsu's start. It's not the case with the OG that while it "crosses off" to Kai in season 1, it's not until the middle of Kai anime that the culprit is revealed. And Matsuribayashi definitely didn't take just two episodes.

I'm pretty sure the author Ryūkishi07 wanted to make a "Bridge" between Higurashi and Umineko in anime with Rika and Satoko and the Witches. Was it necessary? No. One of my friends who like Satoko cope with the fact that Featherine broken her and made her that way. But yeah It made me dislike Satoko and it lessen all the suffering Rika went througt. It was very clumsy. Original Higurashi message for me is " You can create any miracle and change destiny if you bet your everything on it, with the help of everyone." They tried to do that in Gou Sotsu but it failed so hard because Satoko was horribly written.

I think the big thing they were trying to do with the ending of sotsu is put in as many umineko references as they could, without straight up saying that the two are connected. I don't mind, as it can kinda serve as the backstory to some of its characters, and imo connecting the two together is just really cool to me, but I can understand the frustration of someone who doesn't care about that and wants higurashi to be its own thing. The dbz/witch fight was cool though, I was laughing from excitement at how the writer was able to pull that off and still have it somewhat make sense when you consider 'when they cry' as a whole
@sebastianswan79753 жыл бұрын
I have not watched sotsu yet, but from watching Gou, I loved the dynamic between Satoko and Rika since Satoko's conflict with Rika have more to do with what have always been there for Satoko, which was her own abandonment issues. We already seen this in Higurashi in even the question arcs, her reaction to what seems to her to be Rika slowly not caring for her as much anymore was similiar to how she reacted to K1 at the end of Tatarigoroshi hen, Satoko's transformation comes out of her own repressed trauma, which I find is how lots of the characters not just in Higurashi, but in other Ryukushi07's works like Umineko put emphasis on. On your criticism of Sotsu, though I haven't watched it, I disagree about even measuring suffering for both Rika and Satoko, one of the greatest themes for Higurashi as a whole is empathy, it doesn't matter who suffered more or less, both at the end of the day suffered, and that's enough to at the very least try to understand their own perspective, I also do feel that you're minimizing Satoko's reasons for going over the edge, it does not excuse her horrendous actions, but from her own past, it is understandable. Then again, I haven't watched Sotsu, so my opinion can change, overall, I like this video.
@loren54323 жыл бұрын
The only message I got from Gou/Sotsu is that the show participates in victim blaming seen as how Teppei is an abuser who actually got reedemed while Satoko faked her situation in these new arcs as an abused person and actually enjoyed putting her friends through literal hell (and that's not counting the show's gaslighting attempt at trying to make Rika look bad in the end even though she wasn't the one who trapped her BFF in a death loop). Like I get the idea because on paper throwing the word "empathy" willy nilly sounds wonderful, but in reality it doesn't work like that. I'm not going to have empathy for a serial killer just because they had a rough childhood; yeah, it sucks, but having a troubled past isn't a free get out of jail card. They're still shitty people who deserve to be punished for fucking over others that had nothing to do with their situation (in this case: Satoko fucking over the club members mostly and a few of the adults). It really irks me how some people have the nerve to compare Rika and Satoko's situation when Satoko is the one who crossed the line with the whole looping situation. It's as if the word "morality" is all over the place just because "empathy" is thrown in.

@@loren5432 Sotsu does not sound very good then in that case. So it's just Rika and the rest of the club murder simulator? @@sebastianswan7975 Well, Sotsu's score is low to begin with (6.9) and it keeps getting lower each day, so there's that. 12 of the 15 episodes are basically Gou with 5 mins of Eua/Satoko thrown in for the lulz, with only the last 3 episodes being actual new content (they literally spoonfed the viewers because they were afraid of us not being smart enough to put two and two together). Without spoiling too much, the first two arcs serve no purpose (Wataakashi being the worst arc because it's a worse version of Meakashi), the club members literally don't do shit and have no reason to exist (they only throw stupid lines about friendship even though they're kept in the dark as to what actually happened the entire time) and Rika's and Satoko's situation isn't actually resolved in a satisfying manner. Personally, I won't compare their suffering because what they suffered was their own biggest fear. What I'd compare though, was their intention. When the satoko split personality was shown, i thought it would lead to some epic showdown of Rika (and friends?) going to save her from the demon counterpart. Rika says the serious version of herself is her true self, and that does add up, but there's no way the Satokoni is the real satoko (as the split demonstrates) and she completely rejects herself. Also she shot herself, so how did she "give her the body back" when she was supposed to not exist anymore? It wouldve made more sense for Satoko to be tied up and not hanyu. (also why was Hanyu super curvy now, seems like a weird design decision of all things they couldve done or changed. someone was horny af for Hanyu). It honestly pissed me off that everyone else's memories didnt play a part in it like the OG series either. They were treating keichi like the MC again, only to focus on Rika and Satoko (which isnt bad) and he had memories from before but that didn't go anywhere either. Rika had some piss poor advice to give to. it's true she suffered but i think Rika didn't do enough to help with those timelines anyway, even if she couldn't predict the cause/ slight deviations from what she already knew. The fact that she didn't catch keichi's memories and ask him for help again baffles me. THey also got LAZY with some of those "let me inject this person this early and see what they do" scenarios. Wtf did they say to Mi/shions mom? What did they do to keichi? Some of them start off reasonable and snowball out of control (as the syndrome does) but how could keichi come to the conclusion "hey bashing in my friends heads is super fun!" that doesnt make sense at all. The presentations VS reality of what happened with the Child services scenario with the uncle batting keichis brains out urked me too (cuz it didnt actually happen). I SUPPOSE i accepted it but just felt like they didnt know how to twist that set up how they wanted when it came to explaining it so they instead used Satoko's story. That's a cop out. With those fragments, i feel like they missed out on Rika finding the shard about their "future" and seeing just how much Satoko suffered when Rika essentially abandoned her. Sure, the suffering wasnt equal at all, but it seems Rika was never able to actually understand just how terrible she had been to her best friend. They couldve cut out some of the clingy cringe early. IT honestly felt like watching the final Sasuke VS Naruto fight but without all the part that make it meaningful. They were even punching eachother in the face in water for cryin out loud! Feels like someone took the iconic scene and inserted Rika and satoko but forgot to add all the parts that have it make sense. The lesson about friends is important and i do like how the older kids had to come in and teach it to Rika and Satoko to show them just how childish they were being (despite being century old loopers or w/e) but everything leading up towards that was just poorly executed. The ending feels so cold, insincere and unsatisfying. It's actually unnerving because Satokoni is giving Rika a break but still obsessed with her and Rika still feels disgust (which makes sense but its also like they didnt really make up. Idk. I mean understandable but... not good) . I never wouldve thought that Satoko's uncle would be the saving grace of that ending. Also Satoshi waking up was nice i guess even though we didn't see more. -

everytime i hear people talking about Higurashi Gou and Sotsu they always say to watch the original version first and not all of them imply this but it's very obvious why they recommend this because the newer Higurashi is confusing and bad in so many ways. if you have watched the original 1 then you realize how much they ruined Satoko as a character and alot of her actions and sudden changes in personality just make no sense at all...even the rest of the cast are a shell of their former selves if you replaced all of them except Rika and Satoko it won't even affect the story at all.

I enjoyed some of it. Buttt yeah it fell on its head at the end. The fact that Shion amd Urie weren't in Sotsu storyline really and had more stuff than just repeating Gou but from other pov. I really think the only way for it to even be somewhat redeemable if it connects to a new unineko anime

Am I the only one who wanted them to adapt the OG vn word by word?.. I mean it’s possible since there are no choices. Still it would take too many episodes to make this a reality

best thing i can hope for the higurashi series is a new chapter or an anime that's met positive reception. or having sotsu gou getting fixed and met with also positive reception. that's just idea (if that becomes a reality then i'm a monkey"s uncle lol)

Is this that show called 'when they cry'? I haven't watched yet I haven't had the chance but I've been meaning to.

@@Phantom-kc9ly learn some common sense asshole. Maybe I didn't watch the whole video because I didn't wanna spoil it because I haven't watched it, which is why I asked what show it was. Is it necessary to be a complete dickhead to someone for asking a logical question?

I think the lesson here is that not all stories have a good ending. I don’t personal want to start a story if I know it will end like this but I know there’s people who are interested in dark stuff like that.

*The only good thing that came out of Gou and sotsu was making read the masterpiece called Umineko, and seeing other characters* But I kinda rather have a remake than.....whatever this is

It was a disappointment. It went flat when it could have arose to do something amazing but, it's just a spin-off. I hope that when Mei is translated it'll be something nice to wash off the bad taste that Sotsu left. But hey, I got some more Rena out of it!

Sotsu is the most mixed I've ever been with any anime I've watched first I loved it then I disliked then I hated it and wished it was done differently I tried my best to love it like I did the original but I just couldn't It felt like no love was put into it non of the characters were utilized and I could probably keep going but I don't wanna turn this into a essay
