The problems with the costumes of ''The Magnificent Century'' and ''Kösem'', are they accurate?

I'm glad I found this video. The costumes of both series are really beautiful but I thought the women looked "too westernized" and it seems like I was correct. Mind you, I know that Turkey does have that mix of Eastern and western culture but I wish they had gone for a more realistic approach just like they did with the men's costumes. There's something that I want to point out about Safiye wearing stays/corset. I get that this is inaccurate in real life but in the show she was a fan of Elizabeth I and talked about her several times, so Safiye emulating Elizabeth's fashion (or western styles overall) is a detail that I think adds more to her character.

I love this comment! and I am more than happy to be able to talk about it with someone! I almost totally agree with what you said but I still have my doubts. It is true that as you said, I am sure that the production wanted to give more layers to the character of Safiye Sultan shows her imitating a little the style of Elizabeth I, but the said "style" was being completely anachronistic to the time in which the series happend. Safiye and Elisabeth historically exchanged correspondence in the 1590s, among the letters gifts were also sent but none of these were clothes or dresses, moreover, Safiye gave Elizabeth a tiara of pearls and rubies. Elizabeth sent her a portrait of herself. It is not known for sure if the real Safiye was inspired by the lifestyle or wardrobe of the virgin queen historically, but it is known that Safiye held her in high esteem in the sense that she adored each of the gifts she had and the gifts she received. proudly displayed, it is even said that she fell in love with an English ambassador. Now in the series it is portrayed that she has a very European style more than Elizabethan, I would say. She is the one we see most in European costumes in the entire series, but the first season picks up in 1603 and what Safiye is shown wearing is more inspired by stereotypically modern Rococo, Renaissance, or even Victorian clothing and silhouettes. in some points. what I understand in an artistic way but when you know about historical fashion is a bit strange... And obviously Safiye is not the only one to have a wardrobe highly inspired by European fashion. Truly the vast majority of the cast has European (or even modern) dresses with the odd Ottoman element to make us think of where they come from. But the line of difference between European fashion and Ottoman fashion is almost not existent in the series... What if in the second season the character of Princess Farya Bethlen (which is totally fictional, being inspired by some of Murad IV's wives) wears the most European costumes due to her roots. But these dresses are also anachronistic, she and her lady use a wardrobe very similar to the European fashion of 1540-1560 (specifically Germany and Hungarian because she is a Hungarian princess) when in reality the moment in which she is presented to us, the events of the series take place in 1632. The European fashion of 1632 (Baroque period) looks completely different, even the well-dressed European ambassadors with their standing lace collars appear, but the ladies don't??

Again, I do love Safiye's and Kosem's dresses but there is a point where I felt their costumes are like the disney interpretation of historical fashion, still fabulous but you know what I mean 😂😂. I guess it was an intentional choice and they just wanted to have fun with it.

@@YannNovas exactly! I completely understand you, as if the sultanas were Disney princesses or belonged to fantasy.
