This was an incredible resource to help me understand Bogost's concept of procedural rhetoric - can't thank you enough for this. I'm writing an essay on Games as Art, and this is a huge help. Thanks very much, and I look forward to more videos from you! You deserve way more views imo

You bring up a really good point about the sense of insignificance players feel in Far Cry 2 with regards to the infinitely respawning enemy camps. Certainly I didn't notice at the time, and even after someone pointed out one of the main themes as being that of the decay and horrors of endless wars, I never quite realized there could have been intent with the camps. I feel it's likely I didn't notice because frustrating game mechanics like that often exist to extend game time or because the developer simply thought it would be exciting or the like.

This is a part of the basis for my dissertation, pretty cool. I don't know why I am surprised at the amount of Bogost stuff on youtube lol

I think the blue shell in Mario kart is a great example for procedural rhetoric in games, since it always targets the Player at the first position and you are more likely to get one, if you are in the back of the field. It's a mechanic to balance out Player skills, keeping the races open til the End. All in all great Video! :D

I don't think that decisions made strictly for anti-griefing and balancing reasons (like punishing the player for working against their team in CSGO) can be considered rhetoric. Overall, great vid.

Thanks! I think Bogost would argue that rhetoric has more to do with the effect of decisions rather than their original intentions.

I really like your video. However I got the slight impression as if you think your audience does not see videogames as a serious medium. Your voice in the beginning of the video when you explain overcooked sounded like a parent would tell a other parent about a ridiculous game the kid is playing^^ haha Otherwise, very good video. Love to see more :D
