I think it’s time that manufacturers start selling directly to the consumer

That would make too much sense right? We can thank automotive lobbyists for making it illegal in many cases. It would save us consumers time, money, and energy if we could change that.

Not sure why people think it will be any better selling direct there’s just gonna be different set of rules and games all over again. Also, any chance of negotiation will be completely out the window.

Just bought a 4 runner….built in Japan….ordered it in July and just picked it up…..same. Msrp…no add on….. dealer tried and tried but I stuck to it and paid what I built…. They really really tried. My advice order and get it on paper. They can’t fight you because you ordered it and already have the price.

Congratulations on your Tacoma, great color. I just picked up my ‘23 Grey TRD 4X4 Off Road. I went to Glendora first, they were trying to add on $4K in accessories. Wound up getting from Longo at a phenomenal price & zero in un-wanted accessory add ons. They were transparent and no games. I was in & out in less than 2.5 hours. I reside in Chino Hills where the tax rate is only 7.75 %

It took me 3 months to "order" my 2023 trail edition. which came in April. I had to work with 3 dealerships. They were all willing to sell at MSRP. Only one dealership was actually able to get the truck in however. Worth the hassle and the wait. Love my Tacoma!

The good news is they paid for and installed the TRD 2"-1" lift kit for free because of my wait time. I paid for the vehicle upfront in full so it was already in my name. They knew I could get a refund since I had not taken delivery so they went ahead and took care of me.

Some advice for what it's worth. Disagree if you like. Stay with your local dealer. Reasons (i should back this up right). 1. Toyota allocates inventory by region and dealer sales. Most manufacturers do. It messes up Toyota when you don't stay local. Which Toyota doesn't like its allocation messed with. It costs Toyota headache and money. 2. Many of the dealer markups are to discourage people from other locations from buying the cars. Sure. The dealer makes more. But they consider it the loss incurred because they do better servicing local customers over the long run. 3. A dealer here wont seriously even discuss online or phone inquiries now. They are sick of it. And he told me straight out if this person buys the car it takes from someone local like myself. You know someone that is actually in the dealers assigned region. They tell people to come in. Or ignore them now. Or maybe quote them a stupid high price. 4. Cheaper and better service. I've dealt with 2 local dealers to me on more than one occcasion. One is simply "he bought from us before". They are willing to drop the price. Local repeat customer. The other dealer same. Not only did i get my truck on time, i got it BELOW MSRP. Because they know I'm local. They even discounted shop time half price when i went back to add accessories. Yes thats right. Below MSRP and half priced shop fees. Other local dealer wouldn't have been any different. I talked to them on a vehicle. They dropped it a grand below msrp and below the dealer rebate on top just because i was a local repeat customer. By being local and a repeat customer, right off the bat I'm spending 2k less on that vehicle. Because they know local is local. People know one another. Word and reputation spreads. It's the difference between the dealership staying open or closing. They have you in the system. They see you as a repeat current customer. They may even remember your name. It makes a difference. 5.. If you have a problem with your car... You'll now bring it most likely to your local dealer. Your local dealer will realize you didn't buy it from them. They won't refuse service. But good chance they won't "try" quite as hard. If it's warrantee, somw other issue, schedule. Don't plan on them putting you to the front of the line. You didn't buy it from them. They know this. Whatever dealer (perhaps far away) really couldn't care less about your car. You aren't local. They made their portion, you left with the car. Thats it. Anything they get in communication from Toyota they'll forward to you, or your closest dealer. Who also knows you didn't buy the car from them. See ? Small communities definitely, cities not as much but keep it local. You kids might go to school with the techs kids, maybe you golf with someone who knows one of the sales people. People know eachother, directly or through other people. I get this (was in business). Usually shopping I'll get some quotes. Then I'll find someone local. Who will try to match the price to get the sale or the work. Maybe they can't. If billy-whatever- says he can't match the price I'll be honest. "Hey. How close can you come. " And more than likely if billy is even near close I'll pay Billy. Because i know if something goes wrong Billy is there. I'm looking to establish a sort of business arrangement with billy. You cant do that with non local. So billy might be "I'm $400 higher" then its. "Okay billy whatever I'll give you five over and you get the sale or work". . Billy gets it too. Billy will pick up the phone if something happens Good video. My answer is there is a life learning experience here. I learned myself in business and general relationships. Establish a network, build your network, respect the people in your network. Whatever it may be. You're life will have far less headaches, far less questions, you'll probably pay less for things, get genuine smiles from people. And overall just be happier with more support. You'll be able to call your "billy" or if you do it right you'll have 100 "billys" in your corner. Who will just make your life easier.

Thanks for writing all this out. These ideas have their merits. You're talking to someone who believes these dealerships shouldn't exist in the first place. We should be buying direct from manufacturer... but that's a long conversation. I'd like to resist playing into this system our auto economy is based on as much as possible. And if I have to drive hundreds of miles to force the issue, and I ultimately get my way, it feels like a win :)

@@TyDollar perspective., i want dealers in business. I just expect ethical business practices. My car had programming issues (not Toyota different). Friends a certified bmw volvo tech. It needed a fix (system software) he did for me. But most, would need a dealer. No one else has the knowledge, or software. There is no other way. So who would fix cars with no dealer? It's computers, programs, software. Very complex. Very brand centric. He actually took classes to work on these. 😂. Recalls, warrantee work. If no dealer, who would do it? The dealer vouches for you to the manufacturer that your car has a genuine recall or warrantee claim. So how would that work, with no dealer? How to use you car (sounds basic i know) but a lot of people dont know how to use their car. Cars are becoming more complex. Hardly anyone wants to read the 300 page manual (nor would they understand it). The dealer actually show people what cars have, and how to use it. With the increase in infotainment centers, wifi, blutooth, various applications this stuff gets involved. Especially hooking to devices, home garage door openers, alexa.... I mean the list goes on and on. Upper trim levels can get extremely involved. So who is going to set up your car for you and show you how it works? Some cars have various modes, ev and electric. Even various on road modes, suspension settings. This is no small thing. So who will show people how to use their cars?
@TyDollar
@TyDollar Жыл бұрын
You're right, those services will always be necessary! And I'm not suggesting they go away. The problem is simple, dealers are middlemen. Conducting business directly between manufacturer and customers is more cost effective for both parties. Toyota should sell cars direct to consumers, and all these shops should be run directly by Toyota the corporation. Of course there will always be independent autoshop businesses to choose from as well. The intermediate party just squeezes more time and money from everyone involved, and overall makes the car shopping and ownership experience one of the worst parts of American life.
@artieartya
@artieartya Жыл бұрын
Agree dealers should just be no different than like a Home Depot or a Walmart. They have nothing to do with pricing and add on services. You just buy the car and then go there for service and support and that’s it.

Bought 2021 trd pro, been wanting to take to otay Mesa truck trail. Does anyone know if it is open? I’m new to off-roading this trail seems manageable for beginners! Let me know, thanks!
@TyDollar
@TyDollar 10 ай бұрын
Not sure if it has multiple names, are you talking about Otay Mountain? If so that's a great trail. There's a padlock on the gate and the trailer park nearby will give you the code if you ask the people at the front. Although when I went, the gate had a TON of locks on it, none of which were actually locked. It took me a few minutes trying the code on all the locks before I took a closer look and realized I could just slide the deadbolt out and open the gate. All of this is assuming you enter via the Pio Pico entrance. Border patrol is known to close the trail from time to time. Not sure how to check with them if it's open before driving out there.

I was on the fence about short bed double cab or long bed access cab. If I was immediately dropping 10k on a camper shell and rooftop tent I would have gone with the long bed access cab. But for me that's probably years away, so it just makes more sense to have the extra cabin space. It's great weather proofed storage with a bit more privacy and security. This is an off-road vehicle, not a work truck, so 5 feet of bed is more than enough for personal cargo.

I lucked out back in April. I was on-line and curious enough to look at Taco's on-line. I saw a 2023 Taco Sport Shortbed Double Cab with EVERYTHING on it in Lunar Rock. It was offered for $45,500 with only a $300 (just because fee") It was listed as "In Transit". I rushed to the dealership (Big dealer in a huge metro area) and told them I wanted THAT exact truck and he said no problem, we'll have it in two weeks...charged me a $500 dollar deposit and was able to follow the staus of the truck through their website. It was mine in less than two weeks! Congrats on the taco it’s beautiful !!! I bought the exact same trim as yours brand new in 2021, and now with 50k miles on it I love it even more today than day 1 . Make sure to use 91 octane gas most people that complain this gen3 Tacoma feels sluggish is because they use 87 octane , this 3.5L is a high compression motor 11:1 ratio to be exact and does much better with 91 octane , I definitely noticed the truck liven up and got better mpg when I switched from 87 to 91 it took about 2 tanks to notice the better difference , also change your oil every 5k miles don’t go by what the book says which is 10k mile intervals and you will easily get 500k miles from this truck , to be honest it’s the best truck I have owned in 27years and that’s saying a lot . I do have a 1.5 inch lift in the front and 1 inch lift in the rear with 265/75R16 tires wrapped around TRD Tacoma pro wheels and fox by pass shocks on all 4corners and getting 24MPG on the highway keeping it around 65-70mph and getting 15mpg when towing my car behind it which is about 5700#’s it’s a great truck does everything I need it to do and more , good luck on your beautiful Tacoma !

Wow thanks for your comment, that's a lot of great info. I have not experimented with higher octane fuel yet in my truck. I was coming from a Volkswagen as my previous vehicle which required the 91 octane. I was enjoying paying less for gas! But of course there are performance and longevity benefits worth considering. Thanks for watching and good luck to you as well!!

I can't believe the crap you went through here. I had mine in under a month. Couple emails. Phone calls. Sent me a list of whats coming in. They said they couldn't pull from other dealers. (I tried). But being loyal _and local- i said I'd wait. Three weeks later i went on the lot to pick up the truck. They even stayed open a hour late for me because of my schedule.

@@TyDollar it was weird when i picked up mine. Surreal. There was only 3. Including the one i bought. At least one of the others was already spoken for. So they either had none for sale. Or maybe 1. The front of lot was mostly all full of used cars, different makes. Likely bought at auction to fill space. Entire rest of the lot. Not a single car. Just empty pavement. All of it. This is the new car Toyota dealer. But it hardly had any new Toyotas. When i picked up mine...it almost seemed. Special.... Like i was 1 if maybe 2 or 3 that week. Geez they stayed open late just for me

I did not have a great experience either looking for my lunar rock TRD off road. Went to multiple dealerships. They acted like i was the a*S holes when i brought up negotiating for discount. Found one in transit. ETA was two days at Cabe Toyota and dealer broke down the hard numbers. I agreed and they held the car for me with ZERO deposit! Very nice saleslady. It was arriving in two days and sat on the lot for another 4 days because I wasnt able to show up due to work. Yea there was a 2k markup but came with 10yr free oil change and like 30 car washes. Was okay with markup + i didnt want to wait so another two- 3 months for another one.

The end of 2020, when the Lunar Rock first introduced as the next color for 2021 TRD Pro, I was hesitant because I wanted the Army Green and doubt Lunar Rock will even match because of the weird dual colors. Due to no more AG, I went ahead and purchased the LR TRD Pro, drove around, and got so many compliments. Great truck and great color. My guy… YOU AND ME BOTH! Took me 5-6 months looking for the Tacoma I wanted. I knew I wanted leather seats, moon roof, long bed 4x4 off road in Barcelona red. I live in Vegas which was impossible to find here!! I looked in the states surrounding, found some but sold the same day I pulled the trigger. Some states didn’t even sell to out of state buyers which was crazy to me. I bought a used Tacoma from Claremont Toyota on your list {clicked on the vid cuz I recognized the camp spot}. Worst dealership I have ever dealt with hands down. They filled the windshield wiper resevoir with water, it froze solid on my way thru NM on hwy 40 in a major sloppy snowstorm. I couldnt clear the windshield, had to stop and piss in a bottle and dump it on windshield to melt it. A local cop stopped to yell at me on an offramp doing so, once he seen what i was having to do he apologized after telling him what dealer did. It ended up freezing the pump and busted. On my 5k mile round trip home, i developed a clunk in front end and brought it back under "warranty" and they assured me it was just a wire harness that failed...not them putting water in the rez....must be why it took them 6 hours to fix cuz i seen they had to run to LA to get a wiper pump. Then i caught the mechanics laughing bout the clunk and said it was a cab bushing, and thats not covered under warranty. The truck had 8k miles on it when i bought it 2 months prior. Anyway, 8 years in SD was some good memories but so glad to be gone out of CA after 2020. I do miss fishing Silver Strand and Anza Borrego though!

I got a 22 TRD OR 4x4 last year, luckily enough my dad does titles at a Toyota dealer so the big thing that made my time easier was not having them under value my trade (21 Camry SE nightshade) and try to upsell me on crap I didn’t need, they also sell at MSRP there which was nice. However my dad working there did not effect wait times or anything, they did offer me other models if people backed out if there’s that was similar to mine. I got out paying 35k after trade in and money down for a new Tacoma. Even with that it was still very frustrating. They all told me that buyers don’t have much leverage anymore in a nice way because someone else will pay the asking price. It’s sad and I’m glad my dad isn’t a scummy salesman the dealers are taking advantage!

I ordered My 2022 Lunar rock Off-road Here in NM in June of 2022 and had them print and sign that they would end up selling it to me what they quoted, Which was 43,750. after months of waiting for them to build it I finally received it in October. They tried to say they never quoted that price and said it would be 49,000 instead. hours of arguing and finally the manager came out and gave me exactly what I wanted. Toyota then claimed at their 4.9% I would never find a lower interest rate, that's when I pulled out my bank loan at a 2.7%, laughing in their face. I too decliend all of the "Extras" they try to add during the finance part of things. Long story short I got what I wanted at a "fair" price and have since been offered 10-15,000 more a few times. I think Ill keep it for as long as possible, but idk the new 4th Gen is looking sexy.

I just bought a 24 tundra. Same story as you, especially the asshole finance guy. He had to print at least 5 contracts cause I kept finding stuff he would add. Did they try and get you on the $899 IKON anti theft?? I even made them take that bullshit off. Finance guy argued with me about the fact that the Toyota tech package did the exact same thing with an app on your phone. I showed him a KZbin video about it and he finally shut up and started typing. Took at least 2 miserable hours with him. But I got out with msrp and a great deal on Toyota careplus, which they tried not to sell me cause he said it had to be in a extended warranty package. That was another half hour argument . One more thing they lied about, said I had to finance and could pay it off when my payment book arrived. I had to threaten to go to another dealer and show them the build sheet of the truck the other dealer had coming in to get them to accept a check payment . This is after pulling a deposit from another dealer for adding 5k in magical wax, sexy bra and procoat to a truck they didn’t have in stock yet. All dealers suck ass, no way around it.

Thanks!! Yeah I understand the thoughts on the 4runner. With a 4-door Taco the seats go down and you still get a decent amount of storage sealed in the cab. After that, the most budget option is to buy some big plastic bins to keep in the bed. That works well if you need more sealed storage on a camping trip or something like that. Personally I'm just not too worried about security when I get outdoors to remote areas. In the long term I am pretty interested in a hard, locking bed cover like the diamond back. Those are priced high for their value so I'll just focusing on paying off the truck for now :)

When I bought my son's 2017 Tacoma the guy said I can give you all of this, this, and this, for the same payment. Amazing right? Except that it added a year of payments. When I noted that, he seemed to think no big deal lol. Yeah lets just add another 5-6k onto the loan. I sold cars for a year back in 2003 to get some 1 on 1 sales experience. It also definitely taught me how to buy a car.

Greate Video! Im in Santa Barbara CA, and can confirm everything you've experience here in Cali! Pretty frustrating to say the least. I've been looking at the tacos since 2020 🤯 due to all the reasons mentioned in your video, I sat on the idea and waited as it also wasn't a necessity. Now my car is reminding me her age (bought new, 2003)... So I'm back on the taco truck hunt, again! Now that the 4rh Gen is coming out soon, I figured I'd wait for them. Like you I had my eyes on the Pro, but landed on the OR (for exact reasons). Your logic seems very similar to mine when it comes to the Taco and I am curious. What are your thoughts behind the LB version vs the SB. Did you ever consider the LB? And also, why 3rd Gen vs the upcoming "Hybrid" 4th Gen?

Deciding on bed length was a big deal for me. If I knew I was going to immediately drop 10k on a camper and other gear to convert the truck into an overland rig I would have gone with the long bed. But I would only do a long bed with an access cab to maintain the shorter wheelbase. In my case though I'm in no rush to invest all that money, I'll definitely spend a few years just paying off the truck. So in the shorter term, and considering this is a daily vehicle for me, the double cab makes sense. Also depending on how you look at it, the larger back seat that's water tight and climate controlled has its own benefits for camping/traveling storage.

As for gen4, another commenter asked this question and I responded in some detail. But TLDR, I don't want to be the guinea pig for the first model year of a new Gen, and more importantly the new power train. The 3rd gen Taco engine is tried and true, and should last half a million miles if I so choose.

Just purchased the same truck/color/options in Indianapolis. I have been ready to buy since February. Drove thru many lots after hours until I saw the one I wanted fresh off the delivery truck. Called first thing I the morning and purchased it (msrp, no add on items and no pressure for other stuff). As I was buying it, others were calling in trying to do the same. My advice-be ready to act fast.

I have the same ride but a 22. I added the TRD lift kit, bed mat and lights, door seal scuff guards and floor mat's. 1k over MSRP 52K out the door. I had to go to North Dakota to find one. Bought it online never drove a Tacoma because no one had any in Minnesota to test drive. Got a text saying it's ready drove 4 hours and grabbed the key's and went home best dealer experience I've ever had. Had a one month wait. Minnesota wait was 4-6 years wait list. Wish I knew I had another year I've would have waited for a six foot bed!!
@TyDollar
@TyDollar Жыл бұрын
That's an incredible story! Sounds like a hassle but I'm glad it worked out for you. All's well that ends well I suppose. I think 6 foot beds are nice but personally I would switch to an access cab with a longer bed so I could maintain the short wheelbase.

@@TyDollar I only see dirt roads when hunting and fishing and wanted to sleep in back with tailgate closed. Lots of black bears around here mosquito's also. save 4k with short bed! No topper. Like you love the color and Got lucky finding it!! I put the Go Rino E1 running boards on and they look good. I have a short wife and she had a hard time with the lift. The boards tie in the black wheel well trim nicely. Have fun with the mods and do yourself a favor and don't go too cheap! You'll have that truck a long time. Take care!!

I have mixed feelings about this. The new truck has more power and torque, and gets better MPG, all due to the hybrid. Along with a new transmission, the 4th gen is basically supposed to solve every issue with the 3rd gen truck. There are definitely things I don't like. The wheelbase is 4 inches longer which is a strict downgrade, and the new dashboard touchscreen is way too big and not integrated properly, making the dash look terrible IMO. But most importantly, the turbo-4 + hybrid is a new powertrain. The whole reason to buy the 3rd gen truck is the naturally aspirated v6 2GR style engine that's been in several Toyotas for decades. The way I see it, I can always trade in for a newer truck if they turn out to be reliable. But for now I think the 3rd gen is gold!

Stay strong!! I definitely wouldn't pay a market adjustment. If you're fine with the 4th gen truck, it will probably have the kinks ironed out in a few years anyway :) Although, people are speculating the MSRP on the 4th gen will be significantly higher than the 3rd gen due to all the new features...

Are you in southern California? I bought my truck from Toyota of Whittier in LA area. They did not mark up the truck and I was able to negotiate no dealer add-ons. I was also working with Santa Margarita Toyota south of Irvine. They told me specifically they don't markup or force add-ons (TRD Off-road anyway). However I didn't actually buy from them so who knows what would have happened if I went through with it.

That's great! If you can get in you should enjoy the trail. There are three entrances so you could exit near the town of Dulzura on highway 94 or farther south near the border which spits you out right next to a jail. I'd recommend the first option. You'll want to pay attention to the map near the top of the mountain and make the correct turn. It's likely you'll encounter other vehicles, including dirtbikes or quads so heads up!
