Mazzy, this is hands down your greatest video. And I'm not saying that because you hardly spoke or because I initiated the prog vinyl tag but this was a brilliant piece of performance art. I came very close to tears. Tubular bells as the backdrop and the kaleidoscope visual worked so well. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to make this masterpiece video. I'm also in awe that you got to see so many of my favorite bands in the 70s. Of course Genesis Lamb tour is the one I'm most jealous about but seeing Tangerine Dream, King Crimson, and Yes all in the 70s must've been incredible. I love the time you spent on Kate Bush's Before The Dawn box set. I had been wondering what the contents were like. I love that you showed the Peter Gabriel two Deutsches albums. I need them still on vinyl. Only have the CDs of those two. The Roger Dean Views book is wonderful as well. I always wanted a copy of that but it's too pricey these days. Thanks for going through that one as well. Amazing paintings. Thank you again for doing the prog vinyl tag. I know you made it for anyone who views it but I'm going to consider it a personal video for me even if that's not the case. You truly are the best! Thank you. 🙌🏻

Thank you Bill. Thank you for the kind words. This was a fun one to do. I thought about the direction for a few days and ended with this. I actually enjoy these records otherwise I wouldn’t own them. As you can see most are earlier releases in their careers as I feel the excesses started after these … Yessongs. I do love those three 80s resurrection albums from King Crimson. More if a Prog post punk direction. Those were fresh again. In terms of those live shows; Right Time right place. Btw Donovan opened for Yes. That was later in 78 I think. Big Kate Bush Fan here. Would have loved to have seen that theater piece 🌸

Perfect choice...Tubular Bells is my cellphone-ringtone...This one or Echoes by PF was the one that brought me to prog. Back in the days we had a special show on Swiss National Radio Broadcast where they played one piece of music they couldn't play in the normal program, because it was too long. When I was about 12 years old I played with the old tube radio of my parents and accidentially stumbled over this wonderfull piece. It opened heaven to me. And now, almost 50 years later, it still does.

I grew up in isolation in San Jose and my greatest musical experiences were mainly when I was a student at UC Berkeley. My first real concert was Yes at the Oakland Coliseum 1977? but I think the best concert I saw was The Clash at the Warfield Theater March 1980, London Calling tour. I like your flexible boundaries for this genre , which is appropriate for progressive rock . And you have to have a sense of humour with this genre , as it invites a poke in the eye with a stick . Needless to say , I’m a huge fan of prog . There was nothing quite like a prog concert in the 70s . The visuals were usually glorious, as was the music .Anyway , a nice collection of albums , and I must check out Before the Dawn . It looks really interesting . Thanks !

Tull totally had a Prog moment with Brick and Passion Play. Progressive can be vast.. The cliche that’s it’s only bands like Yes , ELP, KC and so on is flawed. Even these bands progressed into other crossed genres. The Prog music cliche is easy to mock. But I love these records. Excess started beginning with Topographic and Yessongs IMHO. And then Punk put it in its place. The three 80s King Crimson records I showed were a welcome new direction for them. 🌸🌸🌸

Their works are highly regarded here in Europe and in Italy where I live and where these two bands were successful first . Much more than Kate Bush and other you showed. I my personal opinion the top ten prog bands are : King Crimson - Gentle Giant - Yes - Van Der Graaf Generator - Genesis (With Gabriel) - EL&P - Jethro Tull - Caravan - Camel - Barclay James Harvest. You know it's only music but it is right to honor the great ones and GG & VDGG are great.

Some labels and artists (whomever is the license holder) allow use of their music in videos like this (as long as they are not selling a product). Any revenue from the ads you see goes to them. But there are also many artists that do not grant the use iff their music (Beatles, Stones, Miles Davis and others). If I upload a video using their songs, I get a warning and the video or that segment is blocked. So I have a choice to delete the section or upload a new video with music I can use.

Wow that was awesome, so much Bill Bruford in one video. I love prog and fusion and don't agree with much you like in rock but we are much closer when it comes to jazz. I do have a sense of humor and have no issue with our differences. I really enjoy your channel but you took it to another level with this subject. I have a question I want your recollections and opinion on. First I for some reason I respond to unusual time signatures so, Duh, that is why I like prog and jazz. I am 71 and grew up with my dad playing Benny Goodman, Basie and Ellington and others so the power and "swing" of big bands have always appealed. When I was 13 The Beatles showed up on the Ed Sullivan show and ever since I have had one foot in Jazz and the other in Rock. So now the question did you have any contact or memories of the Don Ellis Orchestra. Two of his best live albums were recorded in San Francisco, "At Fillmore" ( June 1970 opened for Quicksilver Messenger Service ) and "Tears of Joy" at Basin Street West May of 1971. He had a lot of rock energy with the full jazz big band vibe. Most of all he was famous, even in the jazz world, for very unusual time signatures. You'll love this, he had an earlier live album call "Live in 3 2/3 4 time. When he died at 44 a friend said " that was the only thing he ever did in 4/4. Just curious if you had any thoughts about him. Keep up the good work.

Residents = prog ?!? Interesting! :-O Never would come to that idea! Though, they triggered a considerable amount of progress indeed, considering their influence on later artists from the post-punk period. :-D One question I would really love to hear the opinion of a San Francisco native about is: Is there a relation to the San Francisco Mime Troupe? What do you think? Some years ago there was an exhibition in Cologne about the San Francisco Underground Scene (also including themes like the Weathermen and stuff) and I came across some 1967 footage from the Mime Troupe and I was struck: That's totally Residents' kind of footage, isn't it? Is there a relation? If not as an offshoot but maybe a major influence? I was surprised that I never had seen discussions about that. (The Mime Troupe is completely unknown in Germany unless someone is into the origins of psychedelic poster art.) My impression is they were not that much about music in the beginning but about theatre. (Also considering the acoustics on the "Delta Nudes" material.) And they became a "four-piece group" named The Residents just because of that Beatles pastiche album cover. Had it been the Stones we would know five eyeball-men today. It would be really really interesting to have an episode about your view on the classic Ralph Records / Residents / Crome / Tuxedomoon period from you. :-) Any chance?
@mazzysmusic3 жыл бұрын
I've seen the Residents 9 or 10 times since the 1970s as they were a local to me. Also Tuxedo Moon and Snakefinger. I only have a handful of records and CDs of their's left in my collection. I always felt the Residents were far more interesting as a live act than on record. They had a very performance art feel so they could as well have been under the Prog umbrella which is very wide despite what some people think.. At least they way i define it. When I was a teenager I would see the Mime Troupe perform for free in Golden Gate Park. Later Bill Graham organized and produced some of their shows before moving on to produce Ballroom rock shows and opening the Fillmore Auditorium.

I’m a prog-head since the 70s and I have a sense of humor and so explicitly do many prog bands! What you’re doing is smearing stereotypes on a huge, diverse international community of artists and fans. I wonder, just taking one example, if you ever heard of Samla Mammas Manna who are outrageously humorous and intensely progressive? So for that matter is Frank Zappa: progressive music in the truest sense of the term.

"Prog" was not a shorthand I recall being used in 1970. I remember progressive rock, and preceding that progressive jazz. I love the Prog I showed. But around 74/75 they got excessive and easily to make fun of. It too awhile before they got original again

Maybe not generalising with "prog listeners have no sense of humour" would see you get better feedback from that community. Or...maybe get better jokes! Either way, not sure what your point was about expanding the boundaries and not just picking the same tired old albums - that's exactly what you did. All mainstream stuff. Setting it to maybe the most mainstream bit of prog music ever. No need to act like you're digging deep when you're stuck on the top soil.

Good comments. I wasn’t digging deep at all since I haven’t really pursued the genre too much after the two periods I showed. These albums for me are the sweet spot of the genre. Overplayed ? Probably. But then by 74 or 75 many of these bands got to be parodies of themselves. And that excess for me, is easily mockable. King Crimson had that great 80s return in the 80s and even their evolution over the past twenty years. This video was my response to a series of questions. My responses can only be based on the records I own and my limited knowledge of the beginning of the genre .. which was un named at its inception. It’s for others to dig deep into the music. I know I’m certainly not. 🌸

Tangerine Dream is an exponent of the Berlin School of electronics and does not represent the diverse “Krautrock” or prog scene in Germany at all IMO. Choosing the Residents as an example of prog from the Americas is like choosing Tiny Tim as an example of American rock & roll - it’s ridiculous. I’m afraid you’re a bit out of your depth in your understanding of the genre.

It’s not that we don’t have a sense of humor, it’s that you’re always making fun of it, which you don’t do with any other genre, that I’ve seen, anyway. Which makes me wonder, why (or if) you even like it, as you claim. I have a great sense of humor, but I just don’t get your obsession with tearing it down all the time. Yeah it’s long solos and long songs, that’s how Prog is. Which you obviously don’t like about it, or you wouldn’t continue to carry on about it. That said, this was a fun video- after you stopped talking ;) A long song came in handy here, now didn’t it.
