I only sew when a project requires it. I don't walk around thinking up projects just so I can sew more. I guess I don't see it as a hobby for me but just as a skill I utilize once in while.

thanks for the update -- people get busy, it's just the way of things. don't feel bad for having a passion wane for a bit. breaks are good and healthy. you'll come back to the sewing when you're ready. until then, happy fishing! (watch out for those alligators, yikes)

I thought YT had been hiding your channel from me... Stepping back from something gives a whole different perspective.... and that is often enough to see something new, or miss something, and get back with renewed vigour or fresh ideas...

I saw your Insta reel about this pack and I was guessing the magic trick with the fishing line sticking to the outside of the bag was a velcro front panel, but it was a magnet! Should have known :D I also have these "flip of a switch" moments where I get burnt out on some productive hobby for a few months and it's kind of frustrating. Good to hear your view on it.

Hi Jason.. I do exactly what you say; I concentrate on my classic cars in the good weather months and then during inclement weather I further my interest in sewing and my sewin machines. Many thanks for your video.. (Phil - UK)

Just found your channel a month ago or so. It’s nice knowing there are other dudes who are into sewing. I’ve made a few bags here and there but watching you fish at the end has motivated me to make my own fishing rig. Thank you

Getting a break from sewing is mandatory. If you don’t, you will become burnt out. I took a break for several years now I’m back full force. So don’t beat yourself up. Also I love to paint in the winter.

Love the art! When I was a kid I could draw anything I put my mind to… albeit, it would take months of work for me to draw the simplest things, lol I was fully capable… given an endless amount of time, I could create a masterpiece. But seriously, I had been stuck in a rut for years, & last summer I remember a really gifted friend of mine saying to write something every day & to draw something every day - no matter how trivial, no matter how many mistakes or minutes - just do it - DO IT NOW! And I surprised myself one night, listening to a podcast, looking at the 3 host in the thumbnail, I drew them in under 15 minutes. Never, ever, have I had the inclination to draw a human, but I did a damn good job. So looking forward to being inspired… right now I’m inspired to hunker down & watch Camping with Steve 😉

Thank you! The advice to just draw every day was a big hit with me as well. I watched a YT video (wish I knew which one but I've watched a TON at this point) where the person pointed out that you may not be good at drawing, but you probably weren't very good at driving when you started, and now it's something you can do without even thinking about it (OK bad example, more people should think about driving lol). It's amazing what even a short time of consistent practice can do for any skill! And Steve is an awesome human :) Thanks for watching and commenting, and keep creating!

Just checked yesterday to see if anything new had been posted. Certainly happy to see you back, and certainly sympathetic to having a hobby get put on the shelf, then returned to, sometimes a cycle that happens three or four times. And ten years is a long time to stay wrapped up in something. As others have said before me, do what's best for you, if that means a longer gap between videos that's ok. If it means no more videos that's a choice that has to be respected. And I just fired up a couple machines today, after 8 months off. YVR

I am a very big fan of custom designed 'anything'. You have specific sized items that you want to carry. So, your design has some constraints. Also, the 'swing' around access is very clever. You really don't have to take it off to reach your items. Now if you could just teach me to make those. Oh. I don't fish. Oh well. (your stepping away for a period of time is not unnatural. I just created 15 leather pieces for sale and haven't gone back to it for a couple of weeks.) I can identify.

Welcome back! I got turned on to your channel while you were away, by looking for "sewing for men" and was hoping for more of your content. I think it would be nice to also see some of your 'of all trades' experiences. I hope you find returning to youtube to be not too stressful. I think the kydex stuff would be neat to see, and totally would like to see more sewing projects geared to men.

Good to See you back again. The pack looks very useful. I often build up task specific tool kits and buy whichever pack suites the application. (I sometimes get to sell the set on afterwards). As others have said, I regard the sewing machine as a tool that gets used when needed and don't get hung up on the fact that I haven't used it in a while.

Good to see you back! And interesting design. It very much reminds me of the maxpedition Sitka gearslinger. I have had a similar experience with pretty much any hobby I have had. Motivation for those tends to come in waves, and I have learned instead of fighting it its good to just go with the flow. Its kind of nice to 'freshen up' with different interests from time to time.

Jason! I love watching your stuff. I've learned a lot as I try to work with my inherited Consew 226 and 17 other vintage singers that I've picked up since last may. Hobbies are like you describe. If they don't encourage us/bring us joy, we don't do them. Do what you need to do but come back and teach us more. I'm not sure how I feel about fishing among the alligators. There are not much of a factor here in Idaho.

Thank you! Most of the time the alligators are just something to be aware of and don't really cause any problems, but occasionally they can be a little more insistent. Personally, I LOVE them, but always from a safe distance 😂 (I here Idaho has some great fishing, too, though!) Thanks for being part of the channel!

You do Kydex stuff with a heat gun and then grommets to hold it together? I wonder how hard it would be to sandwich or glue magnets to it, and make some custom tool holders, for the grill or toolbench or whatever. I was thinking on my aquarium stand. It would be nice to have custom holders with an open bottom for drips, and if you can do it for cheaper/less time or R&D than 3D Printed, that's a win for the maker toolbox. Oscars breeding wild in Florida, why don't you go catch some of those invasive plecos too! I keep fish, but it sucks when they endanger our native fisheries.
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 11 ай бұрын
Hi! I've done a fair amount of Kydex, and sometimes the eyelets are just there to attach accessories/attachments, not necessarily as structure. This sheath is a "pancake" style, so two pieces are molded around the tool, then joined together with eyelets. I'm sure there are pros and cons, but that's the method I've used the most. I'm certain you could glue magnets on with an appropriate adhesive and mount it to things; the retention of the holder you make would have to be low enough to not overpower the strength of the magnet when removing/inserting the tool, but that's easy enough to manage. Sounds like a cool idea! I have seen a TON of armored catfish/plecos, I have never caught one (I'm not sure what they even bite, they are always just sitting on the bottom). Thanks for watching and commenting!
@KoroWerks

@@thejasonofalltrades they Eat plecos down in Peru etc, I follow someone in the ornamental aquarium fish trade down there and he'll show videos where people are cooking Fish on a spit that would sell for 300+ bucks here in the US 🤣🤣🤣 but the ones in the waterways up here are "common" and "rubber lip" mostly, if I remember right. I'm not sure what the best bait would be for them, but I would try dough balls or corn and get it right up next to them, they can be kind of oblivious. and you would definitely want gloves if you were catching plecos(or most catfish with the stabby spines in their pectoral fins). Have a great weekend and thanks for answering!

I didn’t see where you keep your alligator repellent. Nice design! I used to build acoustic instruments, 41 total. Sold a few mostly guitars. A sizable deal with an art gallery to display some fell through and the last 4 guitars remain unfinished in a box. That was 12 years ago so I know all about fading inspiration. I continue to create artful stuff just not guitars. Think metal work.

My dad tried to make an acoustic guitar when I was a kid, and that was all I needed to see to never want to try that! Hats off to you, that's an incredible amount of work. My alligator repellent is usually to bring someone with me that I am confident I can outrun, but I'm running out of friends. 😂

Wanting to sew heavy duty stuff put a break on my sewing, after struggle sewing a waxed canvas jacket for myself and a bag for my girlfriend I packed away the cheap Brother "T&S" now I need 1600-1700usd worth of reasons to start again if I want to get a sailrite or similar to Norway. Waxed after sewing, but still a few layers and folds of canvas and suddenly the stiches didnt look all that good. Didnt even want to try messing with upholstering or boat stuff with my cheap sewing machine.

hey dude that sling bag is awesome !! i tried to design one for the exact reason of swinging it around and having " zippers up" and i failed ..they were always on the side because i couldn't get off a tear drop shape to fit the your back.. and the hold down strap !! I struggle with the angle of the straps can you offer any advice! please
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 11 ай бұрын
Hi! I may have gotten lucky, but here are my thoughts: I went with a rectangular shape mostly for simplicity, but that might help with how the bag sits when moved to the front, I'm not sure. Regarding strap placement, the main shoulder strap is centered (by eye, honestly) on the back panel, the "wing" it connects to on the bottom is in the bottom corner, but on the SIDE, not on the bottom. I think the position of this "wing" on the side panel is what allows the pack to hang from the front. Again, there may be other factors I'm not aware of because the combination of strap placement and shape/size of the bag may have just luckily worked out for me, so you may have to experiment some. I definitely played with the setup by trying on the back panel before sewing everything together to see that it was working correctly. The support strap on the other side is somewhat higher up. To locate it, I just temporarily clipped it in place and tried the pack on until it felt right. I hope that helps! I've used the pack a few times now, and it is extremely satisfying to whip it around front and have access to stuff in it, so definitely keep trying! Thanks for watching!

Very nice! Pack 🐊🎣🐠. I have caught some big Warmouth on the Saint Johns. Also Jason what size needle and thread sewing the pack?
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 11 ай бұрын
I only discovered Warmouth in the last year or so, and they are one of my very favorite species to target. Next time I'm up that way I'll have to try for some! Thread is V69 (I consistently forget to say it because it's what I use 99% of the time), I think I was using a size 21 needle, but honestly 4 different machines were used in this build, so I can't say for sure. In case you're wondering, Singer HD, Sailrite LSZ-1, Consew 206, and Yamata FY335A (for binding) were the machines I used.
