I would give anything to have Whitechapel go back to the 19th century with the original buildings, cobbled streets, rookeries, stables, pubs, churches, cobbled streets, courtyards. So much history. So many ancient cultures. So many forgotten trades.

You would give anything?! Do you realise that even in 1900 the life-expectancy for a female in the UK was 44 and for a man only 44 years! The infant mortality rate was 150 out of every 1000 live births. Today it is 3 ! The ingratitude of people lucky enough to be alive today is both incredible and sickening!

Amazing documentary, all this talk of racism today when those poor first generation immigrants had to work in a close family environment to survive but kept their dignity & traditions without burning down their new Jerusalem. These people although badly treated by their hosts rose above that to survive, a huge lesson to us all : ‘ burning down your enemies village will not make you prosper “ . Amazing history .

Until the 1970's, many of the slum housing in Spitalfields and Whitechapel (plus Bethnal Green, Shoreditch, Wapping, Shadwell, Stepney, Limehouse, Poplar etc) were still in existence in the thousands. Cobbled streets, single houses on street corners or full streets of Georgian and Victorian terraced houses were all over the East End and the rest of London. For example, the original site's where the victims of Jack the Ripper killed his victims in 1888, George Yard Dwellings on Gunthorpe Street were only demolished in 1972, 29 Hanbury Street (a Georgian house) remained standing until the early 1970's, Durward Street (previously known as Buck's Row) built in the mid 19th century stood until the early 1970's, half of Duval Street (ex Dorset Street) stood until the late 1960's/early 1970's, Castle Alley was almost unchanged from the 1880's, and the various Common Lodging House's along Brick Lane, Flower and Dean Street, Fashion Street and Thrawl Street etc still consisted of either the earlier Georgian and Victorian buildings or the huge warehouse like 'Model Dwellings' built in the 1880's and the 1890's. It was only during the 1980's onwards that the majority of the original slums have been demolished.
