This video is really interesting. I saw a study by Meiji University, but I don't remember the exact numbers. It studied the people who pronounced を as オ, ウオ (Hard "w" sound) and ゥオ (soft "w" sound), and it found that something like 30% of Japanese people pronounce the soft "w" sound, and their sample population was just people around the Tokyo area. I think it was like 65% pronounced it without a "w" sound and 5% of people said it with the hard "w" sound. I don't know the demographics of their sample population, whether or not there were foreigners included, but it was interesting nonetheless.

One of my favourite Japanese bands "envy" who are from Tokyo, pronounce it with the "wo" sound in their songs. Because of that, I say it like "wo" too, but very subtle...

I feel that in songs it is often pronounced as "wo", also "行く" often pronounced as "ゆく", because it sounds better.

お疲れ様です。いつも興味深く聞かせてもらっています。今回のお話も勉強になりました。「を」について。これは僕の推測なんですが、話の中で助詞の「を」にアクセントを置く機会が、ほとんどないからかなーと思っています。なので、弱い音で発声することさえできていれば、"o" でも "wo" でもその中間くらいの…よく分からないような音でも別に問題はないのかなー、と思っています。先生の次回のお話も楽しみにしています！

私が住んでいる地域(九州北部)では古語が未だに方言として残っていたりすることも多いです。 古文で出てきた言葉を今でも使っていたりすることもあります。 東の方よりも言葉の変化が遅いように感じます。 を の発音も、方言でwoという発音が残っています。 小学校の頃は、先生が私たちにwoという発音で教えていました。 (訛りのひどい先生だったので方言ということを知らなかったのでしょうね。) 方言ということは、ずっとその地域に住んでいたら、(特に発音の発達途中である幼児期を過ごしたら)もう "を" を"o"と発音するより"wo"と発音する方が楽って人もいると思います。 コメント欄に間違いなので直すべき、という人がいましたが私は、別に方言なので直さなくてもいいと思います。

ゐやゑも本来(昔)の発音はwi、weでしたが、そういえば私の周りにはゐ、ゑをwi、weと発音している人はいない気がします。 ※現代は全て現代仮名遣いのい、えに置き換えられてしまいますが、本来区別されていてゐ、ゑと書くのが正しかったもの(あじさゐや、とりゐなど)の発音のことです

「ん」＋「を」＝/WO/の発音がすると思っています。とくに、日本人がゆっくり話したり、歌を聴いたりすると、よく聞こえると思います。私は、何年前インターネットで調べれて、/WO/は87％ぐらいの日本人の女性に発音される音なんですが、92％ぐらいの男性は、/O/＝（お）のような音を発音するようです。それに、男性が/WO/と発音すると、ちょっと女っぽいの感じがすると読みました。

The pronunciation of "を" had been completely integrated into お by 18th (at least in Tokyo diarect) and under the education innovaton by GHQ, 歴史的仮名遣い(Historical Kana Usage) was abolished which resulted in を was no longer used except particle "を". However, in modern days, people frequent use Romaji to input Japanese language on computer and they began to realize を is chacacter which correspond the pronouciation /wo/, thus the wo sound was revived.

I think the update to the orthography has played a large role here. Before, you would see を and お in seemingly random distribution and both would be pronounced を, so many people likely wouldn't question them being pronounced the same. But now, を only appears in one context. So there is very little that enforces them to be the same. Couple that with the keyboard input, the fact that を is in わ行, etc, and I think you have a system that will probably result in everyone saying /wo/ eventually.

Also を is taught in some schools as being pronounced うぉ, despite the textbooks saying otherwise, so some of the cause is in the education system too.

平安時代末期の藤原定家の頃にはすでに「お」と「を」は同じ音として発音されていたらしいです。 今の人が「を」を/wo/と発音しているのは多くはローマ字(もっと言うとローマ字風入力)から類推した誤った規範意識とされています。

va,vi,vu,ve,vo の訳語としてヷヸヴヹヺが使われていた時代があると聞いたことがあります。 ヰやヱは yi,ye とも翻訳されることがあるのでややこしいですね。

訓令式ローマ字には、古い発音の名残が今も残っています。 wyido no midu wo nomu 平仮名にすると ゐどのみづをのむ(井戸の水を飲む) 大昔はちゃんと「うぃどのみどぅうぉのむ」と発音されていました

The pronunciation of "を" was already the same as "お" 200 years ago, and until the 1960s, "ゐ" and "ゑ" in the "わ行" line also remained as characters. However, the Ministry of Education discontinued the use of "を" except as particle in school education, and "を" was designated as a character for particles. I believe that the "wo" is now pronounced as "を" because of the romaji input of Japanese on the keyboard since the 1990s.

平安時代にどっちもwoの発音に合流して区別してません。昔の言い方が残ってると思うのは文字から見た先入観です。 書き分けてたころもしばらく同じ発音です

@@tn3736 文章の中で使われる場合や歌などで特に強調したいときには、「オ」という発音が「うぉ」に近い音で発音されることもあります。

If a word ending in long おう　or とお is followed by を, I often have a hard time to hear the を because it's only audible as a slightly longer duration of the vowel /o:/ sound. It might be nice for me if Japanese people still made a difference between the two o's.

邦画・邦楽を鑑賞すると1970年辺りから「お」だけを使う人が増えた気がする（東京出身者も含む）。 標準語教育の結果と思われます。 今でも「ご飯を食べた」のように「ん」＋「を」のときは「（柔らかい）を」を使う人が一定数いる。 大阪でも地域によって分かれていて、摂津・河内は「お」が多い。浪速は「を」が多い。 神戸は「お」が圧倒的。

Singing is probably the only time you'll hear it pronounced as "wo". You can and should pronounce it as "o".

"w" is sometimes taught as an occasional vowel in some English school curriculums. AEIOU sometimes Y, and maybe W too. In Japanese を is essentially a dipthong and sounds like ”ウオ” melted together... so if you want to sound more natural　西の人, pronounce it more like 映画　を（ウオ）見る。

カタカナだったらどうですか？　ひらがなの場合、「を」の発音は「お」ですね。でも「ヲ」のは「ウォ」になる事があると感じます。そういうわけで「を」と「ヲ」はわ行なのに、発音が違うでしょう。不思議。。。

をis actually used as a particle and not one of the vowels and you can and should always pronounce it as "oh". If you're spelling something in kana(hiragana or katakana) and it requires the lone vowel sound "o", you would use お. Honorifics would also use the actual vowel お and not the particle を. You will probably only ever hear を pronounced as "wo" in songs and not in every day speech.

私も「を」を「ウォ」というよ。だから、VOCALOIDの関係です。そして、もっと理解やすい、だから言葉の文字と助詞を分かれる。 そして、西の人は、大阪人？広島人？長崎人？
