Thank you for sharing when and for what reasons you repot small plants. We think similar on this 😊 Im sure it will help many who are in doubt! I like to keep my props in as small a pot as possible (unless they need water more than twice a week or a trellis). When they are small and in small pots they can stay on the top shelf of my smaller cabinet, where I can keep an eye on them and reach them easily for an extra drink of water. Once they get a trellis they usually have to move to a window (harsher conditions) or into the tent (harder to reach for an extra sip of water).

As usual, you nailed it here. I've come to the conclusion that most people aren't ... us 🤣 The tiny little pots most likely won't get watered. That's my takeaway anyway. From your list on Emma's page, I fell for these two Hoya: scortechinii and pulchra (which is pretty expensive here, at least the ones I found quickly). Glad you left that nice list!
@Wubblyt2 ай бұрын
@ Haha yes probably. Everyone grows a little differently (hopefully in ways that help the plants grow well for them). Im on top of my watering usually, everything gets water (if needed) once a week… and rough overall checkups in between. But that doesn’t work (timewise) for everyone. We do grow larger plants differently… you love clay pots, I love transparent plastic ones with a coverpot 😉 Currently still using some self watering pots since everyone was so over the moon about them…. I think thats not for me though… the medium doesn’t get a chance to dry with my watering routine 😅. Recently found that some of my Hoyas start growing leaves only when the tree fern is almost dried out, might maybe switch those to just cocochips/perlite/bark (more chunks, still airy)… not sure, will have to experiment on cuttings and that will probably take me half a year 😂 Hahaha that shortlist was tailored to what she said she liked. But I’d put Hoya Pulchra on any list (I think a cutting is around a 100 here as well), same for Hoya Scortechinii (not as expensive) Sometimes people ask “10 favorite Hoya” and I can never get under 40, then I think “maybe I should keep only those 40?” But 10 of those keep changing so I cant…. 😅 If I have to name 5 or 10 its now just the first ones that come to mind Do some of your favourites change?
@soberplantguy2 ай бұрын
@@Wubblyt Speaking of tree fern fiber: boy howdy does that stuff dry out *quickly.* I killed off all off a bunch of props because the top was wet from the prop box moisture, but the actual cup was bone freaking dry. Same with a plant that I left some in. Goes bone dry I no time. No thanks from me 🤣 I suppose my favs list could rotate a bit, but if push came to shove--say I had to move into a small place--I have a pretty good idea of what would make the final cut. It wouldn't be any 10, though 🤣😂🤣
@Wubblyt2 ай бұрын
@ yes tree fern does dry quicker…. (Its why I like clear pots to check the sides for moisture drops) good to know that in prop boxes it can be deceiving like that… I guess it would be the same with moss in a prop box 🤔 For some plants in the cabinet and tent it can take 2 weeks in a 9cm pot (not even self watering) to dry that is too long if you ask me… They are not rotting or dying though… just not…. Growing as well… (they do grow… sometimes) I have noticed that most plants that flower for me dry out in a week or a little less than a week 🤔 so trying to amend the mixes to achieve drying out in about a week (eventually) Hmm moving into a smaller house… thats a good criteria… Im thinking that maybe its a good thing to have difficulty picking favs…. Means a lot of the plants are loved/appreciated 😊 (the “meh” plants usually get rehomed quickly to someone who will appreciate them more)

Oh, don't be respectful. Ask questions 😊 Personally, and you will come across this in my videos, or will see it very soon (because I hardly ever miss a chance to say it 🤣), I don't wait to put Hoya in my substrate. One, I want to know what the roots look like, and to know that I'm not introducing root mealies. I'm so likely to mess up watering in someone else's mix. It's just happened too many times--including very recently to my AH 'Black Magic' because I was saving repotting for a video. Rotted the roots straight off. That's not the advice you'll find on FB, but I know, and know of, many experienced growers who do exactly the same. Cheers from Iowa City 😁

For me, if I have something that is in a pot that is unstable, I will 100% up-pot it. Otherwise, I'd be looking at the situation that you had with your Obscura and a lot of uttered cuss words. When I got my Meredithii, she was in a little 3 oz cup. That cup had no chance of being upright with those big leaves. I up-potted her immediately and have actually had to up-pot her again since then. (Meredithii gets whatever she wants. She is a star.) Regarding Cao Bang . . . is every Globulosa FKA (formerly known as) Villosa actually Cao Bang? Or do you think that Cao Bang is just a variety of what was FKA Villosa? I think I was hoping the former was true, but now I'm thinking it's actually the latter. I really wanted a Cao Bang and bought a plant that the grower listed as Villosa. It's nice, but not as awesome as yours and Miro's. The leaves of mine aren't as large and rounded as yours. I have Cao Bang envy -- which I agree sounds like a personal problem. haha.

Thanks for the information. I have a question that sounds just SOOOO dumb. I know. Please bear with me. How do you know when a Hoya is “thirsty”? I hear people say it all the time. Being new to Hoya, I’m not sure how to gauge that. With such chunky soil medium it’s not easy to read with a moisture meter. It’s not always accurate in the chunky soil medium. And YES, I’ve heard since before my 1st Hoya that they are like succulents and like to be DRY. And that I’ll root rot them if I don’t let them dry out. I know that isn’t your belief. I’m just trying to figure these Beautiful Plants out. I have quite a few Hoya that I have obtained in a very short period of time. Like 100+ in the past 5-6 months. I’ve lost 2. One was root rot. So that of course scared me to death. And I think I went the opposite of overwatering to perhaps under-watering. The other was right after a repot. I’m going to try the mix you are now using and see if I have better luck. I am typically and over waterer by nature. I have to show lots of restraint not to overwater. Just so you know my watering nature. I am not seeing much growth in any of my Hoya. I haven’t potted many of them up from their little 2-3 ounce cups. Again, didn’t realize I could with not a lot of roots. So this video was great. After your examples, I feel good about moving Many of them up to my cups like your square 2.9 inch or whatever they are. They are just like yours you put one of the last ones in. Maybe they aren’t growing being in their little starter cups, growing roots. They don’t look bad. They look “fine”, Healthy, just not growing. I hear Flat mites can be the issue. I don’t have a microscope yet. Hopefully someday soon. How do you treat for flat mites? Can I treat and see if it helps? I know there isn’t just one perfect answer for what I’ve asked and described. Hopefully you can give me an idea or 2 to get me going and Hopefully see some results. OH- I also have an IKEA cabinet. It’s got lights, keeps its humidity in the 80-90% generally just by having lots of plants in there. I do put a humidifier in occasionally if it’s lower. It has fans. But it still has the glass shelves. No wire or clear plastic ones they have now days. Most of my little ones are in one of the cabinets. So they get consistent light, humidity, heat etc. That’s all I can think of to give you information about that might help you help me! I appreciate your great videos and all I have learned the past week by watching you. Again, I’d appreciate ANY info and help you might give. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 2025🎉
@soberplantguy18 күн бұрын
Actually, with the mix I use, chunky as it is, I have no problem using a single prong water meter (emphasis on *single* prong). Unquestionably there will be trial and error. Pot weight is good, but if you have a zillion different plants with different weights of pots, I find that only partially successful. I really do rely on that meter when in doubt. As for flat mites, I don't own a microscope. You will very easily see the cauliflower nubs left around the new growth to indicate that you have them. Personally, what more confirmation do I really need? 🤣 Sulfur is very popular and effective, as is PureCrop one for much more money. There are also speciality miticides available that I've never used, but friends tell me they're successful with. The key is this: don't give up treatment too soon. They have a very, very long life cycle, eggs taking many weeks to hatch, etc and so on. Good luck on your Hoya journey, I'm so happy to have you here!
