The PROS and CONS to an 11B in the Army

I got what I wanted in enlisting as an 11 Bravo with an Airborne Contract back in 1986. I did my job as an Infantryman and got to jump out of airplanes many times and went to combat for the Panama Invasion 89-90 and Iraq 06-08. I was surprised that I managed to survive combat being shot at and shooting back, seeing dead and wounded civilians, evacuating some of our wounded guys, passing by the morgues where our guys were being flown back home. I did realize that my job as an Infantryman was not a cake walk but I wanted to be a man that realizes what life was truly about. When you have friends that have died in combat, life is real and you have to take it seriously. I have also to give respect and be humble to all people to those who gave their lives to save others and respect to them in combat or in peace to save others lives. I have never regretted my life for becoming an Infantryman because if God wanted me to do something else, i would have done it. I can proudly say I am one of America's sons to defend her in combat and in peace.

My cousin was an 11B and tells me a pro would be you get really strong arms from learning how to use a buffer. The con would be that once you get out, your spouse now expects you to buff their kitchen floors. For me, as a 92R, parachute rigger, the biggest pro was getting airborne in your contract. The con would be actually jumping out of a plane….

@@sprainedsoup2929 you have to pass airborne school before you start your AIT. Your main job is to pack, inspect and maintain parachutes and parachuting equipment. Have great cardio and decent upper body strength as the job sorta needs it.

Started life as a 11B . In the 101st AB. After airborne school I went to work for the company. We had no inspections and no oversight. Gone two weeks then back three weeks. The first week was recover then two weeks training then gone for two weeks. It was a great life until someone came home in a bag.

I was a 13 Bravo and we were in the field with 11 Bush because we trained together. Summer time we are out for 30 days at a time and constantly moving, it’s hot, long days no showers for a month. It’s miserable but wouldn’t trade it for the world but at the time you are always asking yourself what was I thinking!! The winter training was even worse probably dug 4 or 5 foxholes a day it’s like soon as you get done cover it back up and lets move out LOL

Its a 12-14 week course. your going to be at fort Greg Addams, VA. In there your going to mostly troubleshoot trucks for mostly electrical problems but some occasional outside problems like engine overheating. You'll get hands on experience in each system. there will be classroom time and floor time. you'll go through each system half decently in depth. engine, fuel, cooling, braking etc. If your worried about not passing dont cause they drill you very well on that stuff.

I spent a couple of decades in the Infantry. As much as things change, they stay the same. I'm sure that both my dad (served in the late-50s/early-60s) and my older brother (served in the late-80s) shared some of the same experiences I had. That said, everything is subject to when and where you served. I might have found 3/187 IN to be one of the best units out there, while also upholding demanding standards. Someone who served in another company during the same time frame might have hated it, while someone serving there a year after I left might think it's a shoddy organization that lacks discipline. Promotions are quicker than many other MOS' up through SSG and even SFC. There's also a better chance of reaching the highest enlisted ranks in a timely manner. Once you make SSG, though, further promotions are very dependent on what you've done and how the selection board looks at your career. My career stalled at SSG. I left Campbell in '04, went to The Old Guard, picked up SGT at just over three years, pinned SSG two years later, then got selected to become a Recruiter, graduating that school a month before I hit seven years of service. Seven years later, I was still an SSG, this time attending Drill Sergeant School. There were a bunch of us on Sand Hill that were in the same boat: young 11B SSGs who did three years as Recruiters and were now old Drill Sergeants with more time in grade than some of our SFC peers had in service. Simply put: the Infantry is a direct leadership type of organization. The Army will speak volumes about the need for "broadening assignments", and those help develop and mature most Soldiers. Infantry selection boards, though, only want to see two: Ranger Instructor and Drill Sergeant. Becoming a Recruiter, working in a staff role, or even instructing at an NCO Academy tells the board that you've been away from the troops and might not be a prime candidate for promotion. You can be the most knowledgeable NCO out there with an exceptional knack for admin and organization, but you haven't been muddying your boots. There's also a level of unpredictability (see my first paragraph). Your experiences will be subject to the command climate, mission load, unit type, and even current staffing of the unit. I mentioned The Old Guard: my first four years there were great! We worked hard but also were treated well and given adequate time off. I went back nearly eight years later and found the company leadership was toxic, the mission load had increased with the restructuring of the Regiment (we had six companies doing funerals previously, now there are four), we were so short-staffed that Soldiers had to cancel appointments so they could conduct funerals or ceremonies, and the rare training holiday usually saw my platoon tasked with setting up flags at the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Chief of Staff, Sergeant Major of the Army, or another VIP residence. I jumped ship after a few months and literally gave up my Infantry cord (by regulation, I moved to higher HQ and worked for generals in my last two assignments). Having worked at brigade and higher levels, if I had it to do over again and wanted primarily to pad my resume, I'd probably have been an Admin type. Intel seems decent too, but pretty much every S1, G1, or J1 I've seen has hours posted with set times for lunch and training. They also have direct access to the commander and usually have NCOs and officers that scratch not only their backs but those of their subordinates. Ever see that Infantry SGT who's just gotten back from the middle of an exercise to help a Soldier with a pay issue get yelled at by a CPL in S1 for wearing a dirty uniform in the HQ building? Of course, the S1 SFC is right behind her just waiting for the SGT to pull rank. A few weeks later, there's the battalion ball, and that 11B SGT is sporting his CIB and a couple of AAMs while the CPL is wearing her two ARCOMs and four AAMs, having already "lost" the SGT's promotion packet.

96 R ground surveillance systems operator. Mos no longer exists but pro is when you are doing your job it's fun. Unfortunately if you're not in the field or deployed you're either doing maintenance or details. Breaking track on an M113 is the worst.

12B and 92A? Which should I pick? Not uber young (26), no significant impact in this market with 0 experience. Cant even work as cashier and dream to join law enforcement (CBP, Homeland, etc). Not really an office guy as I can’t stand in class. Like outdoor working environments that I don’t know what will come as suppose to clock in at 9 clock out at 5 and go home be pissed at your wife cuz your job suck ass. I understand that 12B or combat MOS will take a toll on your body and I’m willing to do it but everything will come to an end so now I don’t know what I should pick 🥲 I plan to serve 20 years. Most people say they plan on serving 20 years. I think it's less than 20 percent that actually serve 20 years and I read somewhere that it's more officers who do so than enlisted. At 26 years old I would say go in the Air Force instead of the Army especially if you want to do active duty. The Air force is geared toward older people not only physically but mentally. The Army is geared towards younger folks for the same reasons. But if you insist on going Army on active duty, between those two mos, I'd say go with 92a simply because you would have more to do plus you would have something to fall back on when you do get out 12b combat engineer is just infantry that doesn't waste as much time as 11b infantry. Not worth it as an older person unless you plan on doing it as an officer

It would make more sense to have a marketable skill then use your gi bill for something else, rather than completely wasting your time on something that isn't translatable, then have to start COMPLETELY FROM SCRATCH when you get out. The best and most logical thing to do is to join the Air Force instead of the Army (that way you wouldn't have to worry about wasting your time in the field in the middle of nowhere for weeks ), avoid getting a AFSC as a plane mechanic (one of the most arguably overworked and worst jobs in the military), then do college while you're serving and save the gi bill for more when you get out. But I guess that makes too much sense for some people who've swallowed koolaid and think they're going to be real life call of duty

I forgot that during the late 80s was much boring stuff as garrison shit and do nothing, I hated Mech Infantry because you do all that stuff in garrison. I love Airborne Infantry because we got to jump out of airplanes 3 times a quarter. Big difference from Mech Infantry which was no adventure going out to the field or doing the fun live fire exercises. I told the guys about my experiences in Mech Infantry compared to Airborne Infantry they were amazed to how boring life would be compared to theirs. Many guys found out after they left Airborne Infantry to be in Big Army not being Airborne to be treated like shit. These guys told me I was not lying to them about how life was easy after being a Paratrooper. They lose their Maroon berets and not be special and wearing patrol caps, just having their Airborne Wings with CIBs Combat Infantry Badges and everyone hating on them and being jealous and got shit for it unless you became an NCO and treated you like God for having a CIB. Otherwise in a Leg unit no one can give you shit because you at least went to combat.

The army is different from the 80’s and 90’s today. Combat arms soldiers who were in the Infantry, Armor or Field Artillery, especially Infantry and Field Artillery as low ranking enlisted soldiers were on field maneuvers most of their time in the Army. And back in garrison, they pulled a lot of mundane and routine duties after being in the field for 30 or more days. And they had some of the most toxic leaders in the Army. I was a Combat Support NCO assigned to a Field Artillery for 3 years. I truly felt sorry for those young soldiers who seemed like they were in a penal system than the US Army. I led chemical soldiers who were combat support soldiers. I did not lead them by threatening them on a daily basis. There were too many incompetent leaders in combat arms back in the 80s and 90s. God Bless our Soldiers!

11B is one of the few MOS codes that haven't changed since the 70s. I was a company clerk assigned to 1/38th Inf with 2ID in July 1974. I arrived there to find they already had an SP5 company clerk. I stayed in the orderly room, but had a feeling I might have to go to the field at some point in the future and I hated field duty. I knew a guy in 2d AG from my first tour in Korea that ended in Jan 74, so I made a few phone calls and in September 74 I got transferred to Camp Humphreys. Compared to my first tour in 2ID, Humphreys was the REMF life.

Run 30 miles a week, in the field more than you're actually on base and when you're on base you start the day at 0630 so wakeup at 0530 work until 1800 every day. We ran anywhere from 2 to 5 miles per day M-F. Mostly in the 4-5 range. I had to run on Sat/Sun in order to get my endurance up so as to not fall out of runs (which meant a shit ton of more punishment). I got really good. Ran an 11:50 on my PT test. First mile I kept up with a PFC that did just under 5 minute first mile, then I dropped back. Once a month we did platoon PT and ran an 8 miler.

Promotion is faster, schools are often available to 11B's. You will be in the mud and outside. About the only job you will get offered will be police officer. If you get hurt, they will put you in a support mos. I all MOS's have a suck factor. Even the guys in S1, S4, working on vehicles if you are attached to mechanized unit. Promotions might be slightly faster because 11 b is one of the larger MOS and it has a high turnover. More 11bs get kicked out or ets because theyre sick of the bullshit or the medboard. Yeah all MOS have a suck factor but none near like infantry where you are more of a janitor and treated like a child moreso than other MOS It also seems to be an extension of basic training where lower enlisted are smoked more for some stupid reason.

@@golfery5119 I went from 1 to SGT in 22 months and 6 in about 4 and 1/2 years. I was a first term SSG. 7 in about 8 yrs and eight at about 11 and 1/2 I got hurt before I went to WO school. Another suck factor is my secondary was 91B med SGT, they would not PA school. I had a per who wanted to go to fight school, past all the bs and they still held him back. That is why I took a medical ets.

I was a 46Q Public Affairs Specialist. Best job in the service. Pros: Job skills directly related to civilian world such as reporter, photographer, public relations, speech writer, content writer, social media, videographer, etc. Was able to look at training schedules or ops and choose what you wanted to cover. Met a lot of senior military leadership, celebrities, and politicians. Cons: Literally can't think of one other than promotions are slow because units are small. (I also was an 11B and an armorer with an armored unit. So I did have some street cred when I went to field and interviewed troops).

Yeah I knew someone in that I went to basic with back 2015 and she told me some of the cons to that job was a lot of video editing long interviews on top of multiple interviews and a lot of critiques that caused her to have to go back and redo the work so if you're thinking of a con that could be it

Yes, I have to say, the school, Defense Infomation School (DINFOS), and every unit and command I worked for had VERY high standards. Because you're dealing with civilians a lot of the time. I was a writer and an editor. My work got sent back for re-write and I sent others back. But, I'd rather be in front of an editing machine than out in the bush getting rained on.​@@denellgraves2397
