John Moses Browning designed the 1911 so perfectly, that he took into account the weight of completely descended testicles to balance it in such a way that recoil is negligible. The swinging of completely descended testicles while firing acts as a cantilever to the recoil.

@225degrees
@225degrees 2 жыл бұрын
This conversation is only happening because of ignorant blind patriotism fed by the lie of just how amazing the 1911 was in "two world wars". The 1911 was a great design, it's well beyond it's prime and is far from being competitive with modern autos, particularly polymer framed guns. 1911's were primarily carried during the two wars, rarely used. They contributed very little in the grand scheme. They aren't drop dead reliable, they have a pathetic capacity, 45ACP offers zero terminal performance advantages while generating increased recoil. Manual safeties are stupid. Exposed hammers are stupid. All steel 2.5 lb guns are stupid. No ability to mount a light/laser (victim of it's time). Overly complicated with 52 parts, some require hand fitting. Government models are huge in size for what you get. All that being said. They are the granddaddy of all modern semi autos. They are beautiful pieces of work and a pleasant looking gun. They can shoot well, and they have the history to go with.

@@jdrseven A shooting competition! Well holy fuck, who gives a rats shit about a GAME. Killing people that deserve it is where the prize is. 1911's are poor service guns and have been since about 1935, when the Browning hipower came to life. It too is antiquated and greatly surpassed by current offerings.

When I was a teenager in the early eighties, my local Burger King was a hangout among my friends. One night my friends and I witnessed a deranged man that pulled a Rambo knife inside of the restaurant and wouldn’t let anyone leave. A policeman arrived and pulled his 1911 and pointed it at the man with the knife. The man leaped towards the officer, and the officer instantly closed the distance between them and hit the man with knife with a right-handed, John Browning 1911, right hook! Besides knocking the man out, he broke the man’s facial orbital bone, caving in a part of his face. He was bleeding very badly and left a very bloody & deep laceration he would have the proof of for the rest of his life. I can’t speak to the tactical decision of hitting someone with a weapon before you empty 8+1 in them, but it’s nice to know that if you had to, the 1911 is a metal rock that will bash your face in with extreme prejudice. ✌️

I was an instructor for North Carolina CCH and senior instructor and trainer at an indoor range. I encouraged my new students to shoot many rental pistols before purchasing. New shooters found they were more accurate and faster with the 1911 especially the 9mm women leading the group. They usually ended up purchasing a smaller pistol in 9mm the SIG 938 was a hot seller. Very few purchased Glocks For CCH. Females purchase of 1911 in 45 acp pistols surprised me. I think the limiting factor was the price and size of 1911s. The SIG 226 was the second favorite. I don’t remember any functioning problems with our rental 1911s. I’m in my 70’s so I am old school and still carry a customized Colt 45acp 1911 ever day in appendix carry, I refuse to carry a pistol without a manual safety.

Your trying to shoot a 1911 like a Glock, not gonna work son, you w/1911 shooting low is like me w/glock shooting high. Different grip angle,(btw the 1911 is at 18deg like a m&p, not 11deg like you said). If your concern is with reliably, we’ll mine came with a bottle of oil for lubrication, I believe your Glock came with what, a bottle of super glue?lol Ammo capacity, hah, I run 8+1. Spot on my man (thank you for your service by the way)... my 1911 would be my "go to" of my pistols for any really serious work.... I can run it under stress without thought... about 120,000 rounds through one will do that..... it becomes an extension of your hands and arms. The nice slim grip suits my quite petite hands much better than the "wonder nines" with their fat handles... the 1911 is a work of genius... it's more than accurate enough for its design function and with good ammo and goo mags (essential for any auto) it will never let you down.....Some complain about the recoil, but my 80 year old wrists still have no trouble with it.... 🙂

David only knocked Goliath down with the sling. He then proceeded to lop off his head with Goliaths own sword. But lets be honest here….i think it was mistranslated and what really happened is he pulled out his Government 45acp and…..well….you know. But in all seriousness experiments were done and they stated the projectile fired from David’s sling could have delivered roughly the same amount of energy as a 45acp, crazy.

However, talking about 1911s in general based on experience with a Kimber is kind of like reviewing Mexican cuisine based on a Doritos Locos Taco. Also, I think that the increase in popularity of 2011 style pistols shows the base designs of these guns is not archaic.

@@eggr1ce374 Prepare for the longest reply on a KZbin comment ever. I will give you my two cents on this but first some of my credentials so you know where I am coming from. I am an intercollegiate competitive shooter specializing mostly in steel challenge. More often though I am focused on training tactical style pistol drills and scenarios. I'm still young and really at the infant stages of my shooting career which has partially consisted of one class at the Tactical Defense Institute in Ohio and two private training sessions with an instructor at my local Vortex facility. Most every instructor I know has told me the 1911 is not a viable modern defense weapon. Based on my personal research and knowledge I am still a believer. So, that it mind, take my opinion for what you think it is worth. If you are seeking a defensive pistol to stake life and liberty on get Ruger and Sig out of the question. I have never seen or heard of those brands of 1911 holding up to stressful circumstance, primarily because I have yet to meet or see a shooter who swears by them. They might be okay pistols, but I've yet to see anyone validate their utility. If we are talking defensive start looking at current designs from high end manufacturers like Wilson, Nighthawk, Ed Brown, or, if you want to go with what is in my opinion the premier 1911 shop for making high quality, combat pieces for defending life and liberty, Alchemy Custom Weapons. At the very least, for a defensive pistol, start looking for something from the Colt or Springfield Custom Shops or some of Dan Wesson's higher end models. If you are looking for a range toy or competition gun that doesn't brake the bank then I think you can get a better production Colt, Springfield, or lower-end Dan Wesson for the same money that you would pay for the Sig or Ruger. My first 1911 was a Colt Competition Model, blued and in .45 ACP. It was a reliable pistol until I sent it in to a custom shop and they fiddled with the internals. That pistol was around 900$ msrp if I remember correctly. Honest Outlaw did a review on the 9mm version and said that one was really good for the money. You can check that out here: www.colt.com/detail-page/competition-ser70-9mm-bl-91

Great video! I’m an inveterate 1911 guy, and have been for years. Own plenty of other “modern” guns….Sig, Glock, HK, etc., and shoot them all well. But at the end of the day, I’ll always come back to the 1911 and it comes down to practice and consistency. One instructor years ago said the 1911 is the most difficult pistol to master, but once you do, every other platform is a piece of cake. Modern guns have plenty of advantages, like capacity, weight, size, etc. However for me, the one advantage they don’t have is that I don’t shoot anything as well as my 1911.

Highly sought after by any gun enthusiast... I own probably at least eight of those things.... Never and I do mean never had a failure from one of those weapons.... I enjoyed your perspective because coming from your generation you were raised and learned to shoot something totally different and what you think and we're trained on what you said without saying... Sounds to me like you've had a Glock in your hand.... The very things you hate about the 1911 I love and the very things you love about the Glock I cannot understand and in my world the term block fits that weapon much better. Having said all that John it's what you're used to when I come out of the holster with that 1911 I click the safety off and never thinking about it it's automatic.... The trigger is by which all other triggers are judged by by 90% of the gun population. Still... I enjoyed your teardown of the 1911 as much as I enjoyed your remarks about the heritage and without that weapon during World War I World War II you did not mention Vietnam and I can tell you friend that gun was used widely in Vietnam! Having said all this you didn't piss me off in the least even though I am a 1911 man... I understand you were brought up on something else. I don't see many manufacturers out there copying the Glock... However I do see more copying the 1911 then I can list on a single sheet of paper.... That tells us there's a huge following... Thank you for your patriotism and your service sir... I love your videos and your attitude towards issues related to this nation this constitutional republic.... when you own and carry. you MUST know what you are carrying, a 1911 = manual safety, use it. taurus G2/G3 with a manual safety, use it. there isnt an excuse for carrying a gun and forgetting its not a glock and its a 1911 and then oh, no bang right. thats why the 1911 isnt a beginners gun, but neither is carrying a gun period. you know. its in your mindset. draw-safety-trigger-bang. if you carry a glock, you know, draw-trigger-bang. something about the 1911 in its modern look is just all business. have a girsan with a rail, SDS duty carry, GSG 22lr, old 1973 spanish star. built a 38 super. looking to buy parts and teach my kid about guns - good ol' 1911. could choose an AR that goes together like lego, but a 1911 is a 1911.

It really seems to come down to what you train with and feels good to you. As far as reliability…probably never had any more trouble with it than anyone else with anything else. I’ve had 1911s almost exclusively since 1980. Some ran flawlessly, others not so much. But the other designs I’ve tried just never felt right. If I had started with something else, I would probably feel more comfortable with it. My carry gun for the last ten years has been a Kimber Ultra Carry in 45acp. If I was a young operator, it would be something more modern. But for an old guy like me who doesn’t storm sandy beaches or crawl through the mud with it, it’s absolutely the best choice for me. When enlisted, I had a 1911 that even with the slide forward rattled more than a civilian pistol slide back. However, the thing just ran and worked. Secondly, I had a Rock Island Armory 1911 standard model, GI type. Only for a handful of years. But thousands of rounds through it and when it range if anybody wanted to feed it I let anybody shoot it as much as they wanted. The only hiccups I had were in the first time shooting where realizing I needed to polish the feed ramp and lightly grease a few spots instead of oil. Otherwise, thousands rounds through it; it worked flawlessly.

I have one with about 2500 rounds of cheaper ammo through it. It has an od ceracoat ,G10 grips ,skeletonized trigger and hammer ,and an extended beaver tail and cost me just $600. Never had a failure of any kind. My only complaint is the black sites. My eyes frequently lose the front sight. I put grease in the slide on day one. The feed ramp already had a nice polish. I run mecgar mags because they were affordable and available when I was buying. There is just something about an all metal handgun that just feels right. Of course the trigger helps.

Carried a 1911 as an Army MP in the 80"s it was an old gun built by Springfield. Had never shot one pre-enlistment. However I always qualified Expert. The dang thing would rattle if shaken. Even shot a bit of competition with the rattling bitch and did respectably. Was forced to carry with an empty chamber and no reload. Ridicules policy. My unit had one in the early 80s that rattled, but went bang every time. Most of our guns had 7 or more digit serial numbers this one had 4! When armorers came to check our weapons, they looked up the serial number and discovered it had been issued before WW2. They took it with them. I'm quite sure it ended up in the Gunny's collection.

As a pre & post 9/11 MP carrying an M9 I can attest to the empty chamber requirement. Doesn’t mean we actually did…jussayin. Also, our arms room was SO OLD, how old was it? So old that the ammo blocks for issued ammo in 2001 were *still* the original 1911 blocks! Could see the magazine outline in the cutout for 2 1911 mags, and on each side were 7 holes for something much larger than a 9mm. Literally the mag holder portion was off shaped to fit 2 mags side by side of 1911 mags. Now, by the end of my career as both an MP and Army civilian cop we had fully moved to round in the chamber and carrying hollow points.

I learned to shoot on a 1911 with an Ace .22 conversion in it. I loved it immediately; I have four 1911s now, 57 years later. I am 68 now, and even though I work out a lot my hand strength is going, and I have a hard time racking the slide of a 1911. I now often rely on my Walther P-38s or Berettas because they have a slide-mounted safety. This gives me an "ear" to hook my finger over, making the loading process easier. I have never put the gun on Safe doing this. Oh, all of my 45s are Colts and they always work, even my Officer's ACP. Good luck, all. --Old Guy

The "modern" high ,two handed grip can be a bit of a handicap if that is all you train with. I find the 1911 points and shoots as well as you are trained to shoot with it. Like any other weapon. Perhaps by design ,I find the 1911 shoots better one handed than any of my modern polymer frame pistols. I can actually shoot it equally as well with one hand as I can with two ,and without dogging into the history of the design ,I am of the mindset that is an intentional part of it's purpose. Military sidearms are more often intended as a last resort or close range back up defensive tool and at close ranges you may need a hand free ,as well as a larger caliber that can stun an opponent (where ever it hits)? At least that is my interpretation. 1911 can be excellent but that does not mean there aren't choices that may work better for you. Always take good care of your firearms and train as often as you can afford to with the firearms you want to be the best with.

I can appreciate your criticisms and I recognize that they come from being a guy who is most comfortable with a Glock. I started to write a long response but I’ll just let us agree to disagree. I don’t own a gun that I can shoot faster and more accurately than a 1911 and I have many different styles. Just some quick observations: -those grips are dogshit and definitely didn’t come from the factory. -Kimber isn’t very well regarded in the 1911 world. Some work but a lot of them have issues. -your grip looks a bit off, like you don’t know where to put your thumbs. Get up high on the gun and ride the safety with your strong hand thumb. Get a good thumbs forward grip and keep them a bit higher on the gun than you’re used to. I personally let my support thumb rest lightly against the slide (I don’t have forward serrations). Finally you can reduce recoil a bit more if you put some pressure downward on that safety with your strong thumb. The grip angle is natural so that you don’t need to shove your wrist down. Personally I feel like doing that just puts unnecessary tension in your trigger finger. It’s fine to not like the gun though, everyone has personal preferences. If you like Glocks then more power to you. 👍👍

As soon as I heard him say “kimber” I wanted to quit watching the video.. almost wanted to quit watching again when he went over his “grip” and mentioned the trigger doesn’t matter 🤨 But you commented a lot of what I was thinking. I shoot single stack division in uspsa and can’t count on my hands and feet how many times military show up with their glocks at a local match and never see them again. One example specific had a local active duty sof guy show up with a Roland special glock, extended mags, and a red dot; he saw I had a 1911 holstered and grinned and said “don’t feel bad when I beat you, I’ve got a glock with 21 rounds of 9mm and a comp” it was just a falling steel match so it was strictly just nocking steel targets down as fast as possible (I figured he’d beat me too lol).. when he saw the results on the iPad at the end of the match and saw that I beat him, pretty bad, he at least had the integrity to approach me and say “man, I was wrong.. you smoked me, you’re really good” but he never came back after that, some of his buddies said he practiced a few weeks and was going to come back but they couldn’t ever talk him into it. Similar stories with the others, just no one calling me out like that one. I understand shooting uspsa and cqc/room clearing are two different things, I would never clear my house the way I do a stage, but it does improve weapons handling and proficiency which a lot of people lack especially when trying to move fast with a gun in hand safely and effectively (I also wouldn’t be clearing my house with a pistol either.. 11.5 ar)

As soon As I saw those wrap around grips, I knew there was gonna be an issue. I love the 1911, I hate wrap around grips like that. I run Chip McCormick slim-line wood grips and I love them. Most of the problems John had with this gun sounded a lot like when you take the training wheels of your kids bike and they have to relearn how to ride on the big-boy bike...😎😎😎 Just my opinion. The high grip John runs works bette on the 1911 if you ride your thumb on top of the safety. From the draw, your thumb is already on the safety, which makes it much faster to disengage.

Rubber Hogue grip plates for life. It seems to be than the “Cons” John gave for that 1911 were related to ridiculously changeable components in a heavily saturated parts aftermarket. The other were because he doesn’t train with single stack, non-hinged triggers, and described using garbage magazines. I’ve reloaded well over 500 Wilson Combat ETM magazines like the kinds used in USMC M45s and never once had any issues with battery or locking back.

As for the recoil guide rod, the partial length (GI) is the original design. I prefer the GI guide rod on full-size 1911's because the gun balances better and it's easier to disassemble. The slide not locking to the rear was more than likely a magazine issue. In terms of reliability, a big detriment to overall reliability is the dozens of brands that make them now. The quality most definitely varies greatly. At the end if the day though, it really is mostly a preference thing, and there's nothing wrong with that. I do prefer the single action trigger over striker-fire triggers and the grip angle of the 1911. Personally, I've found that the weight of the 1911 in full-sized versions (the configuration it was originally designed in anyway) helps reduce muzzle flip. But again, to each his own. As you always say, train hard, train smart.

I noticed in the video that when the slide didn’t lock back he was using a Wilson Combat magazine. These are great magazines however, when you couple them with a gun that uses a MIM slide lock you will eventually have issues. I have several of these mags and when using with my Springfield they have the same issue but when I use them with my Nighthawk or STI guns they work without issue. 1911s were built in a time where manufacturing was expensive and labor was cheap. Some would say they were not designed to have full length guide rods, or to shoot hollow point bullets or rails or this or that. The truth is they were not designed to have MIM parts and that will cause many more issues than most other factors.

The only reason for this is I have over 40K rounds of practice with it. The trigger is glorious, it points really well and is tame. The negatives are the 8 round mags and the weight of the gun. For those reasons, I just got a Hellcat and after 500 rounds, I SUCK OUT LOUD with my Hellcat. I will reevaluate after I get at least 10K rounds through my Hellcat. My only complaint about the 1911 is the lower capacity. Even that is really not an issue. The vast majority of shooting situations require less than 3rds. The grip issue isn’t an issue because it’s a fault of the shooter. Many Glock shooters still slide lock with a “modern grip. The safety isn’t an issue because the natural grip on any frame mounted safety gun should automatically deactivate the manual safety.

BTW, I’m retired USAF (no snickering) & carried the M-15 concealed for many years until forced to retire it in favor of a phat ass M-9. So, no military experience with the 1911 & I still love the S&W model 15 & occasionally carry an old “J” frame to this day. @@FXIIBeaver my first 1911 bought in November 2008 was a Kimber jam-o-matic. “Customer Service” told me I had to shoot 500 rounds first and was probably limp wristing it anyway. At least one 3-point jam per magazine so 500 rounds wasn’t happening. Got so mad I studied up on the platform, diagnosed the floppy firing pin stop and clocking extractor, and replaced those parts. Every time I see a used Kimber at a gun store I smile a little … suckers! (I sold mine to a friend with full disclosure. Apparently it runs like a top after I fixed it.)

@@chipsterb4946 yeah about 10 years ago they were good but now a days I would take my old rock island over a kimber(I am in no way saying RI is the best out there. For those of you who want to jump to conclusions) my rock island ran like a top. Might pick up another.

@@chipsterb4946 fair enough. I was just getting into guns in 2012 so I will defer to the older gen gun people.

Loving the difference of opinion here 😀 My individual experience is that straight wrists are strong and broken forward wrists are weak. I'm a believer and a convert from passive style of grip. You were running 1 second splits because you weren't managing the heavier recoil with your passive wrist forward technique. You can see your hands slip a bit on multiple shots. You need to go straight wrist with grip active like the battle gnome ;) Love the videos sir! Carry on!

John, why does the 1911 look so large when you hold it? You know, compared to everyone else?

I’ve carried a Kimber .45 for years. I always questioned it’s capability subconsciously but in 2019 I was completely reassured when I was walking through the woods, and out of nowhere 2 rabid grizzly hippopotamuses posted up on me. I could see the colors they were reppin’ and I knew I was in crippopotamus territory. I took out my kimber-hand-cannon and began to rain all 7, .45 caliber Winchester White Box artillery rounds at them… After the smoke cleared I realized I was the only one who could live to tell the story. And I’ve never carried any other handgun.

John you know and I know that 1911's have been the basis of lots of race guns. I'm sure if you would practice with a specific 1911 that your performance with it would improve dramatically.

Many valid points here. As to reliability, I’d venture a guess that most of the 1911s that choke in your classes are production level guns. As someone who carries a 1911 daily, and who has spent a small fortune on both production guns and custom guns, I can say that I haven’t had consistent luck with the production guns. Custom guns are a little different story though…but you definitely pay for the reliability tuning on the build.

My experience has been that it depends on which production or stock gun you get. I had great luck out of Milspec springfields, and never had an issue with a Colt. The biggest issues I've seen have been in the magazines. Feed an iffy 1911 with a good mag and it runs fine. Feed a good 1911 with a $3 mag from the gun show, and it's going to have problems.

In all seriousness, all of the “Cons” listed could be attributed to easily interchangeable aftermarket parts, training, and quality magazines. Never seen a 1911 mag that didn’t lock back, but I only use M45 standard Wilson Combat ETM mags.

If you want to raise raise the muzzle a bit when you grip a 1911, Johnny, use the arched mainspring housing that John by God Browning drew when he designed it. Even a Marine like Clint Whatizname can hit with a 1911.

I carried a TLE on duty for about 14 years. When purchased it would hit several inches high at 15 yards. It was returned to Kimber (1-week turnaround), who replaced the front sight and it was well regulated when I received it back. I was my department's top shooter at every qual, so I guess it worked okay for me.

LOVE your style, John! I started shooting 1911s as a teen in the 1960s (I'm 73). Still love 'em and one (lightweight) is in my carry rotation (my carry rotation is mostly dependent on my daily dress - I am a full time, still working minister) and where I plan to be (as in "downtown big city or out on the ranch (l live in a wilderness area, replete with ABUNDANT bears, lions, lots of coyotes, bobcats, etc.). To be brief: high capacity mag (9mms) for "serious social work" in big cities, and 1911 (.45 acp) for the ranch (mine even cycles with CCI shot shells - we have lots of rattle snakes!). Thanks for yet another entertaining and informative vid! -GeezerWheels in SW Colorado (May God richly bless you and your family!)

I ran a Portuguese browning copy, and ran a couple thousand rounds through it, and the only time it ever jammed was when I tried a magdump with Tula ammo.
